10 Childrens Dental Health Statistics

1. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 20% of kids between the ages of two and 19 have cavities that have not been treated. 2. New York Presbyterian Hospital states that tooth decay is found in 20% of children aged four and five, with 86% having some form of tooth decay by age 17. 3. More than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental related problems. 4. Dental problems can affect the self-esteem of children, making them reluctant to smile or engage in conversation. 5. Poor dental care can results in poor nutrition and sleep problems for children. 6. Tooth decay is five times more common than asthma in young children. 7. Tooth decay can be caused by formula, breast milk and juice sitting against the teeth. Children should not fall asleep with a bottle, and continuous use of a sippy cup with sweet drinks should be avoided. 8. Drinking water is ideal for developing teeth. 9. Children should begin regular dental visits at age one. 10. Children should have their teeth brushed as soon as they appear. 11. Helping children establish good, life-long dental habits from the beginning by overseeing brushing and flossing, maintaining regular dentist office visits, and providing a balanced nutrition without excess sugar is the best way to ensure that children grow up with healthy teeth and gums, as well as good overall long-term health. Make your home an encouraging environment that not only supports your childs proper dental hygiene, but also reinforces the many reasons why daily care is so critical. Children who are healthy and happy do not hesitate to smile. And those with healthy, white teeth can flash their smile with confidence.

Winter Festival
Brrrrr, its cold, but theres nothing like celebrating winter with family and friends. Thanks to all of our families for coming out to support our Winter Festival. Families got a chance to dance, participate in the Mushy Snow contest, get their faces painted, make snowflakes and snowmen, and visit with one another at our hot chocolate and cupcake decorating bar. We ended the evening with our famous Winter Walk, food, fun and friends, who could ask for anything more? Congratulations to Danny Ruiz (Room 3) and family for winning the jar of lifesavers. Their guess of 150 was closest to the correct amount of 163. We also want to congratulate our other winners and give a special thanks to Mr. Derrick Banks for donating all of the cake mix for the cupcakes. All cupcakes were made by the children. Also, thank you to Monique and Imani (Nehemiahs mom and aunt) for their face paint originals. A good time was had by all, but we are soooo looking forward to spring.

Survey Season
Our Busy Bee survey season is upon us. We have several surveys that need completing in the upcoming months. The Consumer Surveys have already gone out to our families and are due back by Feb. 28, and the NAEYC Family Survey and Teacher Survey will follow shortly. We want to thank you in advance for your cooperation and valuable feedback. We could not do what we do without you!

Making and Keeping Friends

Knowing how to make and keep friends is an important skill for young children to learn. For preschool and school-age children, friends are fun to have around. They can also be important to success in school! Here are some facts about friendships. The effect of friendships on school success shows up very early Young children who know how to form and maintain close friendships tend to: adjust well to school and do well in classes have high self-esteem learn important social skills, such as cooperation and problem solving The benefits of childhood friendships can have lifelong effects People who learn at an early age to make and keep close friends tend to engage in fewer risky behaviors as teens and have fewer mental health problems as adults than do those who have no close childhood friends. Parents can help their child learn how to be a good friend The best social skills teacher of all can be the example you set in your daily interactions with others. (Actions speak louder than words!) You help your children learn how to make and keep friends when you: model cooperation and kindness with other people, including neighbors, shopkeepers and teachers invite friends over and find times for your child to play with others talk to your child about what it means to be a host and how to look out for another childs needs help your child learn how to listen to others ideas discuss fairness with your childhow to take turns, how to share, and how to solve problems help your child learn words to express his feelings discuss the importance of being honest and loyal with friends discourage hurtful behaviors in your child, and offer other ways to solve problems talk to your child about being kind and helpful to others help your child recognize and respond to others feelings
