Thesis statement EQ

Hawaii residents need to recycle more to prevent the landfills from overfilling. How can Hawaii residents solve the problem of overcrowded landfills? If I educate my neighbors on the importance of recycling and on what can be recycled, I will reduce the amount of trash they produce each week. My goal is to reduce the amount of trash produced each week by my neighbors.
Overcrowded landfills are a serious environmental problem in Hawaii. Recycling is one way in which residents can reduce the amount of trash they produce, thus lessening the area needed for landfills. This, in turn, will help to preserve the beauty of Hawaiis land. 1. Recycle Now Hawaii= a non-profit organization on Maui that provides free public educational services about recycling 2. Save Our Earth Recycling Club (HBB High School)=a high school club that recycles paper waste from all classrooms and does presentations every year at the community rec center

To reduce the amount of trash produced each week by my neighbors

I will ask my neighbors to participate in this project. I will educate them on the importance of recycling and show them what items can be recycled and how easy it is to recycle. I will also give them a brochure to remind them of what to recycle and when the city recycling days are. I will give them specific trash bags to use so that I can measure how much trash each family produces each week before and after my presentation.

Decribe what you plan to do

Where will you do it? When will it take place? Who will be the audience or participants?
How are you contributing to the betterment of a community?

In my neighborhood (King Street, Honolulu)

From August 1 to August 30, 2012

Six households in my neighborhood

By teaching and encouraging people how to recycle, I can help reduce the amount of trash they produce. If I encourage them to spread the word then hopefully more people will join in the recycling effort. This will lessen the volume of trash in our landfills and, ultimately, help to preserve the beauty of Hawaiis land.

Data Collection
Data collection tools Method of analysis 1. Participants log sheets 2. Specific-sized trash bags (to accurately measure trash) Participants will keep logs of their trash volume from August 1 to August 30. I will analyze how many bags of trash each family produces (as recorded on their logs) each week. I will compare the number of bags of trash each family produced before my presentation to the number of bags they produced after the presentation. If the amount of trash is reduced by at least 20% each week (average per family), then I will consider my program to be successful.
Powerpoint presentation to educate neighbors about recycling Brochure to remind neighbors what items can be recycled Log sheets--for families to record their weekly trash

How will you measure success?
