Personal Interview: Panel Members Intro: 2 guys, not a stress interview Questions: P1: How was your GD? Me: Not too good, didnt discuss too much in detail. P1: It was a chaos, was it because of you? Me: May have had a role, but not just me. P1: Whom do you blame for it? Me: Can't blame, was group effort. P1: No you have to pick one, except yourself. Me: Picked. P2: How well do you know 'Arjun'? (The Mahabharata character, and also my name) Me: Told. P2: Who was his second wife? Me: Don't know. P2: Tell me your extra-curriculars. Me: Managing events. P2: No, extra-curriculars. Me: Reading fiction... P2: Last book read? Me: Steve Jobs. P2: What in fiction? Me: Christopher Paolini, Dan Brown... P2: Which book of Dan brown? P2: What was that magic ratio in Da Vinci Code? Me: Don't know. P1: Why you like Steve Jobs? P1: (Few more questions on Steve Jobs, Xerox, why iPhone is more expensive than Android) P2: What is value of 'pi', since you are an engineer? To the max decimal you know Me: Only know till 3.14 P2: That even a 10th standard kid can tell me. Me: Sorry sir that is all we used.

P2: But you have to pick one. Me: C P2: Ok thanks you can leave. It was a chilled out panel. Not much stress. But they won't let you keep on talking and will cut while you are talking. So make sure you make the most relevant point first. Essay and GD Topic Keep your feet on the ground, but have lofty thoughts For some reason I think, I didn't do well here. This was my worst of the three performances. Essay wasn't up to the mark. I didn't have too many ideas probably. GD: on the same topic. I think I did well. I tried to make up for GD as much as possible. Everybody got a chance and everybody spoke. It was a calm one. Probably everybody was lost on ideas. So everybody could speak. Entered as the 2nd person, and then spoke quite a few times. Personal Interview: Panel Members Intro: 2 guys, not a stress interview Questions: P1: Give me your Mark Sheets. Me: Gave them all the mark sheets. P1: Give your work ex certificates. Me: Gave them Work Ex documents, ticked my %ages and work ex numbers. P2: So what do you do as Equity Index Analyst?

Me: Told them what are Index products and what do we do with them. P2: So its a kind of forecast? How accurate are you? Me: Explained about various scenarios. P2: So lets say some 70%, 80%? Me: 80-90% sir. Its generally higher than Equity Research. P2: So if two investors take your advice then if one makes profit and one makes loss, you charge both? Me: Sir, if both use our reports and invest then either both would profit or both would lose. But in reality investors take research and forecasts from multiple brokerages and finally they run their own research and invest. So its their risk. If they feel our research helped them, they pay us. P1: so why do you want to do MBA? You are already doing well. What value will this program add to you? Me: Told them I want to move to front office roles, more responsibilities. P1: They might give you front office roles if do well now? Me: MBAs preferred for front office roles, specific skillset blah blah.... P1: Really? Me: Yes Sir (Cut short by P2) P2: You have 48 months of work ex, why MBA now? Are you married? Me: Yes. P2: When did you get married? Is your wife fine with it? What does she do? Me: Told them. P2: When did you get engaged? Me: Told them. P2: So would your wife be ok with you doing MBA?

Me: Told them. P1: So you think you can get to front office from IIM L? Did Credit Suisse ever recruit front office IIM L? Me: Yes sir. I know from a few of my friends. P2: So finally, if we were to offer you, would your wife be fine with it? Me: Yes Sir. In fact she wants me to do it this year. P2: This is what I wanted you to say right at the start. P1: At least its not too late now. Good. P2: What all calls do you have? Me: Told them. P1, P2: Thanks. You can go. Take your certificates. Essay and GD Topic Exact sciences are full of approximations Questions P1: Which college are you from? Me: VIT, game the full name. P2: Asked me for my file. What should we ask you about? College academics or Work Experience? Me: I would be happy with Work related questions. P2: What is an electronic device? Me: Not answer P2: How would u explain it to a layman? Me: device that works on electricity but has lower current/power ration than electrical devices P2: What is the exact current threshold that differentiates an electronic device from electrical? (I gave him the order of the current that flows but he wanted the exact and i said i do) P2: you should know otherwise these electrical engineer people will come into your field and take away your job. (I was smiling and i returned the smile) P1: What is your company? Me: Sir, Its a broking house. P1: Why is your salary so less? (15k pm) Me: I joined right out of college with little background of finance and moreover the market condition is

not good, so... (P2 was busy checking if i have mentioned the correct marks in the form) P1: What is this Option? Me: Gave the definition. Told them the payoff for one who holds the Option. P1: n what is that you did with Options exactly? (I had mentioned Options analysis in the JD) Me: We advised clients on ways to hedge currency risk using options. P1: So you dont use electronics at all in your work?? Me: No Sir. P1: So now you have completely shifted from electronics to finance... Me: Yes Sir. (I tried to tell them about the CFA and FRM exams that i have cleared but they didnt seem to take much notice of it.) P1: This is dollar rate, if it goes up who benefits. The one with the dollar in hand, the outsiders. There is no effect on those who dont hold dollar. No effect on Indian people. Me: I objected, told them that Crude Oil, which is priced in dollars, is out major import and if dollar appreciates, people have to carry the burden with increased fuel price. P2: It is all balanced, some gain, some loose, exporters gain. So its balanced. Me: i tried to explain that in the short run people may not realize or may not realize for a short movement in exchange rate. P1: If dollar rate had gone from 54 to 64 then also common man wouldnt have cared. Me: gave them the relation between exchange rate and inflation and told that this will affect common man. P2: Where will the sun 1st rise? Delhi or Manipur? Me: Manipur. P2: What is the time difference? Me: Should be about an hour, not sure. P2: From where does the international date line passes? Me: I don't know sir. P2: Through which city in India, do we have the time reference? Me: I think Kolkata. P2: Are you sure, someone said Allahabad?

Me: I think so, sir. P2: Which state are u from? Me: Maharashtra. P2: This Vidharbha region, why is this is the news these days? Me: Because of the farmers suicides? P2: Why do they suicide? Me: That region is not as climatically favorable like the west Maharashtra. P2: But there are very rich people from that region, so what makes the difference between the rich and the poor? Me: told about increase in disparity of income widening and all P2: what are the crops in Maharashtra? Me: Told P1 n P2 ... ok thats enough. You can go now.

Essay and GD Topic Wisdom comes from experience. Experience comes from a lack of wisdom. Questions P1: Give me your file. P2: Tell something interesting about yourself? Me: I was born n brought up in Mumbai, cut short P2: Something interesting, I said. Me: Talked about strengths, some personal stuff P2: Asked about my parents Me: Answered P1: So, where did you graduate from? (P2 going thru my certificates) Me: Answered P1: Asked about work-ex details Me: Answered. P1: What is this Process design and is process simulation on a PC? What are its uses? Me: Told and explained about both and their purposes. (I am starting to think things are getting too technical and need a change!) P1: OK, What did you learn from your work-ex? Me: told about customer interactions, have been to customer sites and conducted SATs, more stuff along these lines... P2: (Handed my file back) so, 5.5 years is too much of experience. You can go for Executive MBA. Why

not that? Me: Sir, PGP is the flagship program n stuff along those lines including the course structure a bit (All this while I find out now that Executive MBA is only for ppl with >6 years work-ex and with GMAT score) P2: Not convinced. Kept coming back Me: told about sponsorship and prior management experience requirement P2: still not convinced. Me: Went back to the same points and got out. P2: So, what are your hobbies? Me: Following football for 15 odd years. P2: What is the problem with Indian football? Me: started telling the first point as lack of infra (cut short) P2: Not the main problem Me: blabbered about height n stamina (cut short by P2 with Maradona's height) P2: compared to African countries, India has the infra Me: Told more about lack of funds from FIFA P2: (satisfied a bit, I guess!) Do you know about Maths, stats and the current economic scenario Me: A straight and honest NO. Lost touch P2: How do you measure a country's worth? Me: GDP, started explaining in detail when asked, cut short. Started explaining about the expenditure P2: your definition is not correct. Me: This is the definition that I know of. Gave the equation of GDP. P2: (With P1 smiling, or no smirking, oh, might well be laughing in the background) arent you expected to know the basic theory about Indian economy before joining MBA? Me: Yes sir, I feel I have a good knowledge of the economy and the sector I work in. P2 to P1: Anything you want to ask for? P1: says no P2: What calls do you have? P1: You have said lots of things about Repo Rate, reverse repo rate and so on in GD, you know all the figures, how do u know all these, are you into banking sector. Me: No Sir, I am an Engineer. I do software design and development. P1: But how did you learn these stuffs. Me: Sir, I prepared all these things for the interview. P1: Why will banks keep money with RBI why no put it into market. They will get higher rate of interest [Reverse-repo rate] Me: Sir, two reasons, money will be safe means risk free and second the money will come to their rescue in times of financial crisis. Also, if they lend to corporates it will be risky, quoted example of Kingfisher airlines. P1: No, it is partially correct but not complete. Me: Sir, I don't know after that. P1: See actually banks keep the idle money into RBI. P1: You know about statistics. Tell me about measures of central tendency Me: Mean, median and mode. P1: Types of mean. Me: AM, GM, HM. P1: calculate AM, GM and HM for 7, 8. Me: Done. P1: Tell me about differentiation and Integration. Me: Sir Integration is the process of finding area under the given curve form by the equation. Differentiation is exact opposite of integration, where we break down the equation. Gave example of X^2 +2X+1 and differentiated. P1: No, elaborate the differentiation. Me: Sir, dont remember. P1: Heard about slope of curve. Me: Yes sir, the first order differential gives us the slope of curve. P1: Good and second order differential. Me: [Thought for a while] Sir, don't remember. P1: ok never mind. P2: ok, you had microwave in your engineering, I know it has been long time since you studied but tell me how microwave oven works.

Me: Sir, I don't know the wavelength or frequency of microwave but I know that it produces heat when passes through water and fats and that is how it works. P2: Can you boil egg in microwave Me: Sir, I have never tried that [P.S.-I have never had microwave oven at my home:]. P1: Never try that. P2: Can you put steel utensils in microwave. Me: No sir, it will obstruct the path of microwave. P1: What are your long term and short term career goals. Me: Told P1: ok then all the best for your results. Do well in other calls you have. Personal Interview Panel Members Intro: 2 Profs (P1 and P2), not a stress interview. P1- Give me your certificates. P2- Tell us about yourself. Me- Began the intro. I could speak only 4 words when P1 interrupts. P1- Why are you not wearing glasses in the pic (referring to pic in the personal data form) Me- Sir, I was wearing it initially but the photographer asked me to take it off because of reflection. P1- Which IIMs have called you? Me- IIM K and new IIMs, apart from IIM L P1- Between L and K, which one would you choose? Me- L, of course.

P1- Why of course? Me- gave the answer. Said something about rankings too. P1- Who are your mentors? Me- Named them P1- What input have they given you? Me- talked to them about WAT and PI preparation P2- What is your favorite subject? Me- Microeconomics P1- What is the difference between micro and macro? Me- Was explaining when I said price rise. P1- What is inflation? Me- Answered P1- How do we calculate inflation? Me- Answered P1- What is the diff b/w CPI and WPI? Me- Answered P2- Which of the two is more reliable and which is more relevant? Me- Answered but took a neutral stand as to which is more relevant. P2- Do you believe in these numbers, the inflation numbers? Me- Pointed out the limitations of both the indices, CPI and WPI, but at the same time said that these are the most accurate measure possible. P2- What is more important, macroeconomics or microeconomics? Me- Spoke about the scope of both of them.

P1- What other papers did you have apart from economics? Me- Math, statistics P1- Define Bayes rule. Me- Couldn't define. Said the formula. P2- What is the probability of your getting selected to IIM L? Me- 1/10 P1- How? Me- The number of interview calls is roughly 10 times the no. of seats P1- How do you know it is 10 times? Me- Pagalguy P1- Thats the problem with todays generation. Whatever they read on pagalguy, they believe it to be true. Are you active on pagalguy? Me- Not very much, Sir. I just look at it sometimes. P2- Now that you have finished WAT, GD and half of your PI, what do you think is the probability of your getting selected now? Me- Got a little confused. P1- What data do you need? Me- No data sir, my probability is still 1/10. P2- Who is the financial adviser to the PM? Me- Dr. Raghuram G Rajan P2- Do you know his educational background? Me- IIM A + PhD from MIT P2- Do you think it is justified? Doing PhD in Economics after MBA? Me- blah blah blah.

P2- What is his research area? Me- Answered. P2- What is Dr. Manmohan Singh's research area? Me- I don't know, Sir P2- You have been such a bright student throughout, why don't you do MA in Economics? Me- Spoke the Why MBA answer I had already prepared. P2 seemed impressed. P2- Where do we see you after 3 years? Me- Three years from today or 3 years after finishing an MBA? P2- after MBA. Me- Talked about short term career goal P1- What are your hobbies? Me- Reading, painting, traveling. P2- You said you read. Which are the last five books you have read? Me- Love in the Time of Cholera, Disgrace, The Museum of Innocence, One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Bhagwad Geeta. P2- Are your parents professors? Me- No sir. P2- How come you have read such books? No one from your generation reads such books. Me- I find these interesting, Sir. (Could have replied better) P2- So you say you have read Love in the Time of Cholera. What do you think about Florentino Ariza? Me- Answered. P2- What apart from the disease does the word Cholera signify in the book? Me- Answered

P1- We are done. You may leave now. Me- Thank you. The GD was nice. Everyone got the chance to speak. We discussed a lot of aspects. Insofar as PI was concerned, it was a chilled out panel. But the professors were probing deep into whatever I was saying. Verdict Converted
