The USA has confirmed it will provide $US500,000 ($F950,000) in aid to Fiji for the upcoming September polls. The assistance was reassured by US deputy assistant secretary for East Asia and Pacific affairs Dennise Mathieu. Ms Mathieu said the US Government looked forward to continuing and strengthening their relations with Fiji in the lead-up to the elections. She said the US was not beginning new relations with Fiji they were rather strengthening relations which had always existed between the two countries. "I recognise that this is a very important time in Fiji's history and at this step, we want to be part of the process to encouraging them in their transition to democracy, which is a work in progress," Ms Mathieu said. "There are still steps to be taken, but it looks as if the government, as of now, is on a positive trajectory and certainly the United States would like to support that process, encourages that process because we believe that the normalisation of relations with the United States will be to our mutual benefit and will be to the benefit of the larger Asia Pacific region." The ambassador clarified that the monetary assistance would mainly be invested into voter education in Fiji. "He (Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama) was very much in a mode of explaining his priorities currently and amongst those, he stated that there will be credible and transparent elections here in Fiji and that was good news and we certainly look forward to seeing the outcome of

A flood warning is now in force for lowlying areas downstream of the Waimanu station, including small tributaries downstream of the Waimanu River. An alert is now in force for low-lying areas downstream of the Wainibuka River. This comes as TD15F remains slow moving over waters in the northern Koro Sea close to Makogai Island or about 40km north of Ovalau at midday on Thursday and has barely moved in the past six hours or so. Having become almost stationary it is unlikely this depression will move north of Fiji as previously anticipated, but instead will stay slow moving at the same intensity through the rest of Thursday and Friday morning.
Westpac has yet again launched another credit card that will complement the success of the Classic Visa credit card launched last year. Adrian Hughes, general manager, Westpac Fiji said the credit card was necessary as seen in the patterns of demand across the globe. We chose Visa as the payment method for our new card because its accepted in tens of millions of locations in more than 200 countries and territories globally, Mr Hughes said. Nowadays, businesses frequently operate internationally rather than in a single territory. More and more, these customers seek a payment method thats widely accepted around the world. Features The Visa Business card carries numerous features that provide allow customers and their employees to quickly and conveniently pay for their work-related expenses.
These include the flexibility of preset spending limits on each card and a convenient AutoPay feature. Also featured is a card transaction in local currency to make transacting even easier for international payments or purchases. In addition, Westpac has provided a further incentive to business customers by offering no application fee, no annual fee for the first year, as well as comprehensive travel insurance. Convenience Mr Hughes said: For example, if on your overseas flight of two hours or more and your luggage containing your clothes and toiletries is delayed in getting to you for more than four hours, the cardholder is entitled to charge up the cost for clothing and toiletries on the Westpac Business Visa credit card up to a certain value. To apply for a new Westpac Business Visa Card, visit any Westpac branch or speak with a relationship manager.
Bad weather has put an indefinite hold on the handover ceremony to end the tenure of Commodore Frank Bainimarama as head of the military. The much anticipated Republic of Fiji Military Forces ceremony was scheduled for Friday morning at the army camp. The handover would have allowed Commodore Bainimarama to formally announce and prepare his political party for the upcoming 2014 elections. Local reporter Samisoni Pareti says although people are disappointed at the postponement, the move is unavoidable. "He has got a very valid reason for the postponement," he said. "They have a huge parade and then they will have to literally carry the outgoing commander...out of the camp, outside to the gate. That will not be very practical in the very heavy rain

and windy conditions. "The country will just have to wait." Cyclone warning Authorities in Fiji are advising people to move from low ground, along rivers and the west coast to avoid a potential cyclone approaching the country. Pacific Regional Environment Program climate adviser Neville Koop says residents should brace themselves for more heavy rains and squally winds. Mr Koop says a slow-moving depression about 80 kilometres north of Suva could intensify to a category one cyclone on Thursday. "That system is pretty much stationary, very slow moving and it seems to be slowly intensifying," he said. "We expected it will drift slightly northward Thursday towards the other main island of Venua Levu." Mr Koop is warning people to stay safe after a young girl died in the flash flood waters on Wednesday. He says most of the infrastructure in Fiji is built for strong winds but flooding will present the real danger. "There is very heavy rain," Mr Koop
Na Draki Weather says there is still a risk that the system may become a named TC in the next 24 hours. Alternatively, it could also stay just below CAT1 intensity for a while longer. What is certain is that the system will stay slow moving and remain in the central and northern division throughout the next 24 to 48 hours at least, it said. Because of the slow and erratic movement of this system predictions are subject to change at short notice. The risk a severe (Category 3 or higher) system remains extremely low at this time through to the weekend. Members of the public in the Central Division have been warned to be aware of rising river levels.
Fiji Braces For Heavy Rain And Possible Cyclone Over The Weekend
Fiji is preparing for heavy rain and a possible category one cyclone to hit over the weekend, with locals advised to move away from low-lying ground and rivers. Evacuation centres are being prepared for wild weather and possible flood conditions. Tropical cyclone forecaster Ammit Singh told Pacific Beat on Wednesday that a tropical depression is currently moving slowly towards Fiji's north west. "Our expectation for this system is to develop into a tropical cyclone by Friday night or early Saturday when it will be over the northern Lau waters," Mr Singh said. On Tuesday, Fiji's Meteorological Service confirmed they were monitoring two tropical depression systems which were likely to form into a cyclone. A heavy rain warning is in place for the whole of the Fiji group. In 2012, Fiji was hit by a severe tropical cyclone with winds of more than 200 kilometres per hour sent thousands fleeing to emergency centres. The weather event destroyed homes, brought down trees, blocked roads and forced the cancellation of dozens of tourist flights.
said. "It has been persistent now for about 24 to 36 hours and more is to come in the next 24 hours so river flooding and so forth will be the big concern."

Pernix (Fiji) Limited is the successful bidder to supply Fiji Electricity Authoritys 30MW Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) Generator for its Kinoya Power Station. The additional generator set costs $60 million. It was announced during an official contract signing between the two parties with witnessing stakeholders at the Holiday Inn Suva. The United States-based company known as Pernix Group is a construction and power infrastructure company with integrated design and engineering capability. In light of the event and things to come, Pernix Group chief executive & president Nidal Zayed said Fiji was in for great opportunities ahead. Regional HQ Fiji we feel from our perspective is really on the cusp of significant growth and investment opportunities for itself, for its people and for companies, Mr Zayed said. This is a totally new building, new machines so itll take them something like about two years and hopefully the sooner the better because wed like to see this to come into service. The machines that we have now ordered through Pernix hopefully will pay for themselves in the savings of having fuel costs within three years. If we shut down the ones that are running on IDOs and ran this HFO machine, its a three-year pay back. I think in anybodys book thats a very good commercial return. Why invest? Authority chief executive, Hasmukh Patel said: The mission of FEA is to promote renewable energy so one might wonder why we are here assembled to sign the contract with Pernix for the establishment of a fossil fuel power station. But the fact of life is that while we develop renewable power stations you still need to develop diesel to make sure that you are able to meet the increased demand in electricity in Fiji.

Government is working with key stakeholders to establish the first rehabilitation facility for street beggars who are both homeless and mentally challenged. The Interagency Taskforce on Beggars which is spearheaded by the Ministry of Social Welfare in partnership with the Fiji Police and relevant non-government organisations have embarked on a major plan to build this facility. Formed in June last year, the Taskforce had carried out a profiling exercise recently and gathered comprehensive information outlining the family background of 40 beggars found in Suva. The Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni says that the evidence analysis has enabled the Taskforce to look at strategies of addressing street beggars in Fiji. The Taskforce had gathered information on each of the beggars in Suva and discovered that there are those who have good homes and own properties, while there are those who are mentally challenged and they are neglected by their families. Given these findings, the Taskforce has embarked on a major plan which is to build a rehabilitation facility for street beggars who dont have a place to stay. The facility will provide care services to those who are mentally challenged
and need medical attention. Vocation training will also be provided to assist them to venture into income generating projects and become self-sufficient. The Ministry is working together with stakeholders like Fiji Police, municipalities and NGOs to help street beggars, Minister Luveni explained. The land to build the new rehabilitation facility has already been identified and construction work is expected to begin in a few months time. The facility should be ready by this year and we got the budget and identified the land to build the facility in Suva. The Ministry has also secured partnership with a Faith Based Organisation to ensure this plan materializes. We want to ensure that we have a place to take these people to once we take them off the streets. But in the meanwhile, the Ministry has partnered with NGOs to provide shelter to those beggars who dont have a place to stay and also linking up with the family members of these beggars to look at the best means to accommodate them. The Taskforce will meet next week Friday to further map out the way forward for succeeding in the plans. We are particularly concerned about the fact that children and persons living with disability are used to gain sympathy to collect money from the public, Dr Luveni said.

The annual session of the United 8 Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations has commenced in New York. The Permanent Representative of Nigeria, Ambassador Joy Ogwu, was re-elected as Chair of the Special Committee. Fiji's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson, addressed the Special Committee, reaffirming Fiji's firm commitment to continuing to serve the UN in peacekeeping operations. He said that Fiji was justly proud it had been able to rise to the occasion and respond to the UN's urgent call last year for peacekeeping reinforcements for UNDOF in the Golan Heights. Noting the evolving conflicts requiring new and complex UN peacekeeping mandates around the world, Fiji's Ambassador called for UN attention to be given to clear exit strategies as part of all peacekeeping mandates. He also drew attention to the need for greater deliberation being given to the
GIVING back to the community and helping someone in need is what PricewaterhouseCoopers and Moy/ Houng-Lee sponsorship does. These were the words of Jenny Seeto, a senior partner of PwC who said they helped students who had difficulty achieving their goals. "What we wanted to do is to help someone who is really bright and deserving but maybe because of family circumstances it made it a bit hard for them to achieve their dreams," said Ms Seeto. She said they only sponsored students
whose parents earned less than $20,000. "Family, parents or guardian who earn less than $20,000 joint income are our target," said Ms Seeto, adding education helped people step out of poverty. "Education is always so important since it's one of the big steps for families that can walk out of poverty and into livelihood. "Our target audience are students." Ms Seeto said the scholarships covered tuition fees and book allowances.

Export Target
The focus remains for Pleass Global Limited (PGL) to target growing export this year. PGL managing director Warwick Pleass says they are working on a couple of new improvements at its subsidiary company, Kila Eco World Adventure Park, in Namosi. According to Mr Pleass, they recently completed an obstacle course which is proving popular with even less fit visitors. Mr Pleass said 2014 had started well. The Pleass Global share price has increased 6 per cent in the past few months. He said the company was trying its best for its shareholders to grow share value and profit. He added 2014 was no different than many local companies in that it was a difficult year for profit. "But we are fortunate to have many loyal customers who supported our Aquasafe bottled water."

Appearing before Lautoka High Court Justice Sudharshana De Silva, John Doughty was initially sentenced to 11 years imprisonment before reducing it after considering mitigating factors. The court heard that the Doughty was not a first offender as he had six previous convictions and three of them were in the operational period. He was also convicted of rape in 1999 where he was sentenced for five years imprisonment. The court heard that on September 6, 2011 at Vunavutu in Sigatoka, the accused had carnal knowledge with the victim without her consent. A father of three whose wife is expecting has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment over the rape of a woman whose drink he spiked during a drinking session in Sigatoka in 2011. They were enjoying two bottles of rum and six bottles of beer when the victim after having cleaned up at the home joined the drinking party with her aunt. They later went to buy more beer from a store located about 100m away from the house. Doughty bought another four bottles of beer, one of which he added Fijian medicine 'ohe', a stimulant that
is as effective as a sleeping pill added to make the "beer stronger." After a few glasses, the victim felt dizzy and passed out. Doughty then volunteered to take her home. She woke up later in a bush 50m away from her home with Doughty forcing himself on her. She was able to identify Doughty with the aid of light from a nearby house. She identified Doughty in open court. A 52-year-old man who was drinking with the group told the court that Doughty did not return to join the group till half an hour later. And they had continued drinking for about 20minutes till police officers turned up at the scene. He accompanied the police officers and found the victim's slippers by the road side and her chain which was broken further in the bushes. He told the court he noticed the victim's "condition started to change after Doughty started serving the beer." Doughty is not eligible for parole until he has served seven years. The court also ordered that a restraining order be put in place for the safety of the victim.
Fiji International Jazz and Blues Festival director Billy Te Kahika (left) with the new Gold sponsor for the festival, Victoria Wines Liam Hindle (middle) and Jerry Vatuwaqa from Stage Tech at the Holiday Inn Suva The Fiji International Jazz and Blues Festival has received another sponsorship boost from Victoria Wines. Festival director Billy Te Kahika confirmed the company will be one of the gold sponsors for the 2014 festival and venue sponsor as well. Mr Te Kahika said: The company (Victoria Wines) was one of the official sponsors for the 2012 festival and the support they give to art and Fiji in general for the tourism-based event is amazing. Victoria Wines went beyond the call of duty to support me in different ways and giving me much sponsorship in cash and making life easy for me. Approaching them to be a sponsor again for the 2014 festival as well as a venue for a couple of after-function shows was a big leap. Matrix Holdings (which owns Victoria Wines) managing director, Liam Hindle, said they were keen to work with Billy as it was the first time for the festival to be held in Suva. He stressed they are working with them to make it a big success. Shows at OReillys Mr Hindle, who also owns the famous OReillys and Bad Dog Caf said: We are looking at after function shows at OReillys and Bad Dog Caf. We will make it a few nights to remember because they will be all high-caliber musicians playing in Fiji on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Mr Te Kahika said: Fiji in general is short for proper performance venue so Liam and I had a meeting and confirmed OReillys to be a venue for the evening shows. Liam has some aspects of changing the stage of OReillys like building a proper performance stage not only for this event but future events also. Mr Te Kahika highlighted one of the key investments made by Mr Hindle would be the remodeling of OReillys and also helping them with some of the logistical costs. New confirmed venues There will be shows happening at two different venues in Suva with the after function shows at OReillys Bar and one show at Pacific Harbour There will be shows at Holiday Inn Suva and the Royal Suva Yacht Club on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5 pm to 11 pm, he said. What will happen then is, we will close all the stages at 11 pm and move everything to OReillys and Bad Dog Caf as its perfect there from 10.45 pm to the early hours of the morning. Mr Te Kahika said they are really close to confirming their programme for the Pacific Harbour event. Tickets can be purchased from Holiday Inn Suva and from the event organisers from as low as $20 to $25 for the daily shows and a weekend pass ranges from $50 to $75.

A 14-year-old girl who dropped out of school in class two and sold for sex by her mother to a sailor of one of the ships that would visit the country for business overcame the struggles and is now a teacher. This is but one of the many stories that were shared on day one of a weeklong summit organised by the Homes of Hope titled, "Creating safety nets to combat commercial sexual exploitation of children', that began Monday at Suva's Salvation Army building. For this particular young girl, her mother sold her for money to buy groceries and her supply of alcohol. Two years later, at the age of 16, her mother attempted to marry her off to another sailor. Later on the girl got pregnant, but the sailor had a change of heart and refused to marry the girl. With her class two level education, the girl had to resort to prostitution to feed herself, her family and her baby. She as referred to the Homes of Hope, a non-profit organisation in Wailoku that looks after young mothers and their babies who are victims of forced sex and domestic violence. She was referred to the homes campus in Wailoku where she was counseled, trained and empowered to be financially independent. She pursued a certificate in teaching and is now a teacher, doing well to cater for herself and provide for her baby a life her parents could not provide for her. The girl is one of the 176 girls and children from similar circumstances taken in and cared for by home since it was established in 1997 by co-founders and directors, Mark and Lynn Roche. In another case, a 15-year-old girl got pregnant. In her mind she accepted it as her fault and that her child was the result of incestuous sex. Through counseling, which took counselors a year to be able to help her break free from the clutches of guilt, the girl admitted she was raped and later manipulated by the perpetrator into a relationship with a view to get her to forget about the incident. And with the Fijian cultures taboo viewpoint on such issues, the girl had come to accept it as her fault. Currently, she is preparing to get her time before the court to bring to justice her perpetrator and fight not only for her right but also for her child. Other young mothers who were admitted to the home have gone on to find good employment and become good employees, while others have set up their own businesses, one such girl becoming a watermelon farmer,
another is now a professional counselor helping other girls find refuge and a better future while others have set up canteens to help cater for themselves and their children. Currently 14 mothers and 16 children call the home their home and according to Nanise Rasuaki, a co-ordianator at the home, most of these mothers are children themselves. Rasuaki said there are at least 300 cases reported. They would be able to get a definite figure once they have completed compiling cases into a database which the home expects to be completed in two months time. But, we are not here to report on the stats but to appeal to everyone and the nation to be aware that this is happening and take ownership to eradicate it, Rasuaki said. Its our duty together as a nation as Fijians to empower other Fijians and not to reduce these young women and others to the same kind of circumstances. We want to reach out and empower every woman and girl. As a small organisation we can only do so much so we need everyones involvement. Share the knowledge and the experiences to be able to save another. The home works together with the Ministry of Women, Ministry of Health, International Labour Organisation and with grant from EU target single mothers under 18 years, and single mothers and marginalised families with children under the age of 18 who are currently being trafficked or whose children are vulnerable to commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) and trafficking. The home opened a week-long summit at the Salvation Army Hall in Suva, titled Creating Safety Nets to Combat CSEC where it aims to create awareness on issues affecting young women and girls, reach out to stakeholders and communities and share success stories as well as strategies that would help others reach out and change the lives of other young women and girls whose circumstances have not been reported for one reason or another. The participants for this summit are 67 gatekeepers from Fijian communities/ villages with which we are working; 4 from Malawi; 4 from Solomon Islands; HoH staff; stakeholders; PM's policy officer; Fiji Muslim League; Arya Sangam; head of Catholic, Anglican & Methodist churches; Fiji Council of Churches.

THE confidence of Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop that one-day election in Fiji is achievable is misplaced, says Labour leader Mahendra Chaudhary. "One day polling requires massive organisational capacity and resources which the Elections Office will be unable to build in the short time before the polls," Mr Chaudhry said. "We are now effectively less than six months from the promised elections. It should be noted that the Elections Office was mothballed for eight years. "It will have to start from scratch to have all preparations in place for the one-day polls in September." Mr Chaudhry said the Elections Office was still in the process of recruiting key staff to assist in the planning, organisation and management of the elections. "After recruitment, they will have to undergo intensive and specialised training. "We don't have a Supervisor of
Elections as yet who should take responsibility for the oversight of the election and the Elections Office. "There is still no electoral legislation setting out the rules and guidelines for the elections. Political parties and the rest of the nation remain in the dark about how the polls will be conducted and the requirements governing it." Mr Chaudhry said polling stations had not been finalised and he believes thousands of voters would not be able to get to polling stations on one-day polling. Ms Bishop told the Pacific Island Forum's Ministerial Contact Group last week that while a single day election would be a monumental undertaking, Fiji was well capable of doing this. She said that there were many things to consider when conducting an election in one day. "We understand that the government wishes to hold an election on a single day and that hasn't occurred before."
The lives of more Fijian children with orthopedic problems could change for the better as a team of medics from the Shriners Hospital in Hawaii returns next month to conduct free health clinics with a view to refer children for surgery. A team of surgeons from the hospital will diagnose and evaluate children up to the age of 18 years with orthopedics problems. Hospital volunteer Rob Leacock who is also a missionary in Fiji said the doctors would after evaluation decide which child they could help and which they wont be able to operate on. We are looking at probably 200-300 children, Leacock said. The clinics start at Lautoka Hospital on March 11-13, March 17 it moves to Labasa Hospital and on March 1820, it will be held at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva.
The clinic will be conducted for children with birth defects of hips, arms and legs, sports injuries, deformities of the spine, cerebral palsy, some burn scars, serious complications from bone infections of the arms and legs and complicated fracture problems and more. All care is provided to children up to age 18, regardless of a familys ability to pay. Leacock said last year they were able to send 25 children to Hawaii for surgery. Missionary Leacock and Maryann Wright from the Hilton Special School, who will be coordinating the kids in the eastern division, will then help the children through the process of getting them ready if surgeons deem it necessary for the children to be taken to Hawaii for operation. The clinics will run from 8.30am to 3.30pm each day at the above mentioned hospitals.

A GROUP of daily commuters were stuck for about two hours on Monday afternoon when the Vunimoli bridge was submerged following the heavy rain experienced in Labasa. Speaking on behalf of the group, Korotari resident Pardeep Lal said the commuters, including students, had to wait for the water level to recede after 6pm. "The Korotari river had also risen by eight feet because of heavy rain on Monday. I have made many humble requests to the CEO of the Fiji Roads Authority to uplift the wooden bridge by four to five feet so it is
equivalent to the level of the road," he said. "It's because the bridge has been flooded many times and it's really risky for residents here. "But despite our pleas to the authorities, nothing has been done." In response, authority CEO Neil Cook said the bridge was open to all traffic. "It suffered minor damage and is scheduled for repair in the next two days depending on the weather. Users are urged to use caution and common sense, especially as the weather is expected to worsen over the next few days."

Plans to shrink the US army to preWorld War II levels, eliminate the popular A-10 aircraft and reduce military benefits in order to meet 2015 spending caps have been announced by the Pentagon. US defence secretary Chuck Hagel, discussing the Pentagon's plan for meeting its new spending caps, advanced a number of ideas that have been attempted in the past but rejected by Congress or are seen as likely to be unpopular in a congressional election year. Mr Hagel said the Pentagon plans to continue shifting its focus to the Asia-Pacific region and will no longer need a land Army of the size currently planned, as the United States winds down its war in Afghanistan. The department plans to reduce the size of the army to between 440,000 and 450,000 soldiers, he said. The army is currently about 520,000 soldiers and had been planning to draw down to about 490,000 in the coming

year. A reduction to 450,000 would be the army's smallest size since 1940 before the United States entered World War II - when it had a troop strength of 267,767, according to Army figures. The army's previous post-World War II low was 479,426 in 1999. "This will be the first budget to fully reflect the transition DoD (the Department of Defence) is making after 13 years of war, the longest conflict in our nation's history," Mr Hagel said. "We chose further reductions in troop strength and force structure in every military service - active and reserve in order to sustain our readiness and technological superiority and to protect critical capabilities," he said. A-10 aircraft, U-2 spy planes to be retired Mr Hagel said the Pentagon also planned to eliminate the Air Force's fleet of A-10 "Warthog" close airsupport planes, which are much beloved by ground troops, in order to ensure continued funding of the new long-range bomber, the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and a new aerial refuelling tanker. "This was a tough decision," he said. "But the A-10 is a 40-year-old, singlepurpose airplane originally designed to kill enemy tanks on a Cold War battlefield. It cannot survive or operate effectively where there are more advanced aircraft." In a reversal of an earlier decision, Mr Hagel said the Pentagon decided to retire the 50-year-old U-2 spy plane in favour of the unmanned Global Hawk system. He said the decision to reverse course came about because the Pentagon had
in recent years been able to reduce the Global Hawk's operating costs. The Pentagon chief also announced a series of steps to try to reduce the defence department's military and civilian personnel costs, which now make up about half of its spending. Mr Hagel said the department would slow the growth of tax-free housing allowances, reduce the annual subsidy for military commissaries and reform the TRICARE health insurance program for military family members and retirees. The defence secretary added that the Pentagon had decided to build only 32 versions of the new Littoral Combat Ship, rather than the 52 envisioned.

Authorities closed schools and colleges in Meerut, 60 kilometres northeast of the Indian capital, after the leopard was discovered prowling the citys streets, a senior city official said. Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to track the leopard down. We have launched a massive hunt for the beast, said additional district magistrate S.K. Dubey. The cat was found inside an empty ward of an army hospital before wildlife officers were called and managed to fire a tranquilliser dart into it, said Dubey. The wild cat was in the hospital for 12 hours. But despite that he managed to break (out through) the iron grilles and escaped. He then sneaked into the premises of a cinema hall before entering an apartment block. After that we lost track of the cat, he said. Authorities have urged the closure of markets in the city of 3.5 million until the animal, which has left six people injured, was captured, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency.
Wild Leopard Ends Up In Hospital For 12 Hours And Sparks Panic In India
Police, soldiers and wildlife officials were trying to hunt it down but their efforts were being hampered by large crowds keen to catch a glimpse of the cat, PTI said. Photos showed the beast pushing its way through a lattice wall at the hospital as a policeman in riot helmet, stood ready to hit it with a baton. The leopard was also pictured leaping off a building site as people scrambled out of the way. Last week another leopard killed a five-year-old boy in the central state of Chhattisgarh, the latest in a string of incidents raising concerns about depleting habitats for big cats which is forcing them into populated areas. Video footage from Mumbai last year showed a leopard creeping into an apartment block foyer and snatching a small dog. Uganda President Yoweri Museveni Signs Anti-Gay Bill, Defying Donors, Obama
Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni has signed a new law imposing harsh penalties on gay people, defying protests from rights groups, Western donors and a warning that it would complicate links with major ally Washington. The new bill punishes anyone convicted of having gay sex with jail terms up to life, according to a draft of the legislation. It also makes it a crime to fail to report someone for breaking the new law, again according to drafts. Officials broke into loud applause as Mr Museveni signed the bill into law in a ceremony in front of foreign journalists at his "state house" in the lakeside town of Entebbe outside the capital. "There's now an attempt at social imperialism, to impose social values. We're sorry to see that you (the West) live the way you live but we keep quiet about it," he said. Gay and lesbian organisations in Africa fear the ripple effect from the antigay bill could spread beyond Uganda to other parts of a continent where conservative societies tend to view homosexuality as unnatural. "It's a gloomy day not just for the gay community in Uganda but for all Ugandans who care about human rights because this law will affect everybody," Julian Peppe Onziema, a gay rights campaigner in Uganda, says. Amnesty International said the law was "wildly discriminatory" and amounted to a grave assault on human rights. And while the veteran leader's signature will please many voters opposed to homosexuality in the staunchly conservative east African country ahead of presidential elections in 2016, it risks alienating Western aid donors. The law comes a week after United States president Barack Obama said the legislation would be "a step backward for all Ugandans" and warned it would complicate relations. A senior Obama administration official had said the US would review relations with Uganda if the law was enacted. Washington is one of Uganda's largest donors, sending more than $400 million a year in recent years.

A UK schoolboy has admitted he and his older brother stabbed their stepfather more than 60 times as he slept. Jerome Ellis, 14, admitted that he and 22-year-old Joshua killed Neil Tulley as he lay on the sofa in their Surrey living room. Their 'frenzied' attack almost severed the 54-year-old's head. But the pair deny his murder, arguing that they feared for their family's safety after he had apparently threatened their mother. The siblings fled after the killing and discussed killing themselves with the large knives they had used on Mr Tulley but eventually handed themselves in to police with the aid of a church bell-ringer, who Joshua told: "We're murderers." Taking the witness stand behind a screen at Guildford Crown Court, Surrey, Jerome Ellis told the jury of the events of the night of August 12 last year. Joshua, now 23, and who suffers from depression, was living as a virtual recluse in the attic at the time. The court heard he told his sibling that during an argument with their mother downstairs, Mr Tulley had threatened to go and get an axe from the garden shed. Jerome said: "He (Joshua) told me we had to kill him." Mark Wyeth QC, representing the young defendant, asked: "Did you agree?". "Yes," he replied, adding: "I saw that as the only option, because he was a threat to everyone in the family, including me, my brothers, my mum and even his own children." He said he and Joshua went downstairs and got two knives from the kitchen drawer before "attacking" Mr Tulley as he lay on the sofa he slept on in the living room. "I wasn't thinking properly and it was all a blur," said Jerome, who could not recall how long the attack took. The jury heard that afterwards the pair had left the house and walked to a nearby forest, still covered in Mr Tulley's blood and with the knives in a Sainsbury's bag with baby wipes the pair claimed were for covering their injured hands. "There was a discussion of suicide, I don't remember who started it," Jerome told the jury. "I considered it. We were going to commit suicide with them (the knives)." At 9.15am the following day Marie Ellis called her mother-in-law, Patricia Ellis, and told her Neil Tulley was dead. Mrs Ellis told her to ring 999 but it was not until half an hour later that she did, lying to ambulance controllers that she was calling about a heart attack victim. When paramedics arrived at the property, in Guildford, Marie Ellis took some time to open the door and then led them to the body on the sofa. There were still three young children in
the house at the time. The brothers evaded police for several days before turning up dishevelled at a church a few miles away, where the older brother told a bell-ringer: 'We're murderers' and asked him to contact police. Prosecutors have already outlined how Mr Tulley had been acquitted the previous year of attempting to murder Joshua by swinging an axe at him. Jerome and another brother had been kicked out of their natural father Gary Ellis' home on January 29, 2012, after he discovered they had been sneaking off to visit their mother and Joshua in secret. Marie and Joshua were said to be happy they had returned, but Mr Tulley had argued that they could not stay in the small home already occupied by him, his partner, Joshua and Mr Tulley's three daughters with Marie. As the argument became heated, Mr Tulley was alleged to have walked out to the shed and picked up an axe, bringing it inside and threatening Joshua. "I saw Mr Tulley try to kill my brother with an axe," said Jerome. "He lunged at him," he added, demonstrating a chopping motion. "It didn't connect, Josh knocked it out of they way and tackled Mr Tulley to the floor." Once Mr Tulley was arrested, tried and eventually acquitted, he returned to the family home. The court heard he drank daily and was abusive towards Joshua, Jerome and Marie regularly in the lead up to them attacking him. Justin Rouse, defending Joshua, said Mr Tulley had previously had a restraining order taken out against him by Marie and had also received a caution for strangling her. Philip Katz QC, prosecuting, questioned whether Mr Tulley had in fact threatened to use the axe, which Jerome had seen after breaking into the garden shed a week earlier. He asked why the police were not called during the argument, to which Jerome said: 'We had tried the police before, he was acquitted and came back to the house and continued to be abusive. "I wanted to protect my family and if that meant doing that (killing Tulley) then that was the only option." As father Gary Ellis sobbed in the public gallery, Mr Katz QC questioned Jerome's recollections and said he was trying to protect Joshua. "Things were going from bad to worse in that house after his acquittal and I suggest that you were angry," he said. "An element of revenge was involved in what subsequently happened. On the night in question the decision was made that Neil Tulley was to die and you agreed to take part in that." Jerome denied any planning or element of revenge in the attack.
Hand-pulled rickshaws in the city of Kolkata have an iconic aura, though authorities are bent on phasing them out. Many saw them as symbols of collective shame, but ironically, handpulled rickshaws in Indias eastern city of Kolkata also had an iconic aura around them. Few cities in the country after all boasted of such a quaint mode of transport: hefty men and women sitting atop a carriage pulled by an often frail, but almost certainly profusely sweating, man through the narrow streets of the city. In recent years though, they are sighted less often. In 2005, the provincial government declared it to be an inhuman practice. A law was thereafter passed amending the Calcutta (Kolkatas earlier name) Hackney-Carriage Act of 1919 with the purpose of phasing them out. Only about 6,000 rickshaws survive
today, with the authorities having stopped giving out new licenses. While human rights activists have welcomed the move, the rickshaw pullers are dismayed. Mostly poor migrants from the neighbouring states of Jharkhand and Bihar, the government clampdown threatens their livelihoods. By some estimates, the livelihoods of more than 20,000 people are at stake as the same rickshaws are used in shifts. Police and civic officials of the city have made matters worse. The rickshaw pullers are routinely harassed and subjected to extortion, and sometimes their carriages are confiscated. Most of them therefore prefer to ply on the inner-most streets of the city, to avoid the officials and resultant trouble. But very occasionally, inner Kolkata is still woken up by the jangling of a small bell that a passing rickshaw puller uses as the horn. Indeed, the bell tolls for Kolkatas last-surviving rickshaw pullers.
A month-old baby who was on life support after he was allegedly assaulted in Bunbury last week by his 15-yearold father, has died in hospital. Mr Murphy said "no decision was required" regarding the life support system. The Coroner and the Ombudsman will now investigate the cause of death and

Here are some general guidelines on what you can and cannot bring home when returning to Canada. Items allowed into Canada must still be declared on your declaration card. Absence of less than 24 hours There are no personal exemptions for same-day cross-border shoppers Absence of 24 hours or more You can claim goods up to CAN$200 without paying any duty. You must have the goods with you when you enter Canada, and tobacco products or alcoholic beverages are not included in this amount. If you bring in goods worth more than CAN$200, you have to pay full duty on the total amount. Absence of 24 hours or more Maximum Amount $200 Minimum Absence Alcoholic beverages NOT INCLUDED Tobacco products Not included Absence of 48 hours or more You can claim goods worth up CAN$800 without paying any duty. You must have the goods with you when you enter Canada. Although you can include some tobacco products and alcohol, a partial exemption may apply to cigarettes, tobacco products and manufactured tobacco. See the CSBA web pages on Alcoholic beverages and Tobacco products for more details. Absence of 48 hours or more - Minimum duty may apply Special duty rate If you exceed your personal exemption after a trip of 48 hours or longer outside Canada you will be charged a special duty rate of 7% on the next CAN$300worth of goods. The rate applies only to goods that accompany you and does not apply to tobacco products or alcoholic beverages. You still have to pay any Goods and Services Tax (GST) or Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) that applies. In some provinces, the CBSA also collects the provincial sales tax. Special duty rate Absence of seven days or more You can claim up to CAN$800 worth of goods without paying any duty. You must have the tobacco and alcohol with you when you enter Canada, but the rest of the goods can arrive later by mail, courier or delivery agency. Although you can include some tobacco products and alcoholic beverages, a partial exemption may apply to cigarettes, tobacco products and manufactured tobacco. See the CSBA web pages on Alcoholic beverages and Tobacco products for more details. Specified quantities only Minimum duty may apply Part of the year outside Canada Even if you spend part of the year in another country, you are still considered a resident of Canada. This means that you are entitled to the same exemptions as other Canadians. When you import foreign goods or vehicles for your personal use into Canada (even temporarily), you have to meet all import requirements and pay all applicable duty and taxes. Alcoholic beverages Alcoholic beverages are products that exceed 0.5% alcohol by volume. You are allowed to import only one of the following amounts of alcohol and alcoholic beverages free of duty and taxes as part of your personal exemption: You must be of legal age in the province into which you are importing the alcoholic beverages. While you are permitted to import more than the amounts listed above, you will be responsible for paying duty and taxes on the additional alcoholic beverages you are importing. Note The CBSA classifies "cooler" products according to the alcoholic beverage they contain. For example, beer coolers are considered to be beer, and wine coolers are considered to be wine.

A Canadian anaesthetist who sexually assaulted women while they were sedated, but still aware of their surroundings, has been jailed for 10 years. George Doodnaught was earlier convicted of kissing, fondling and forcing oral sex on 21 patients at North York General Hospital in Toronto, over a four-year period that ended in 2010. The victims were aware of what was happening but could not move, the court heard. In sentencing the doctor, Ontario Superior Court Judge David McCombs called the crimes "shocking and abhorrent", according to public broadcaster CBC. "His conduct did enormous damage and was reprehensible in the extreme," it quoted Judge McCombs as saying. During the trial, the defence argued the victims had in fact had vivid sexual

year after buying some of the properties from the now-defunct Canadian discounter Zellers. But since its entry last March, the retailer has faced high expansion costs and disappointing sales as shoppers complained about near-empty shelves and notably higher prices than at U.S. Target stores. Retail consultant Maureen Atkinson said competition for consumers' dollars is fierce in Canada, as other retailers like Walmart and Shoppers Drug Mart ramped up their expansion plans in preparation for Target's arrival. "There have been fundamental issues here (with Target)," said Atkinson, who is with the Toronto-based firm J.C. Williams Group. "They have to do better." Atkinson said a more intense marketing campaign in Canada could work if Target is successful at portraying itself as a go-to value destination for "frequency categories" such as groceries, cosmetics and health products. "Canadians aren't used to coming frequently to a store like Target because they treat it more like a department
store, whereas Target wants to be seen as a grocery store or drug store," she said. "Obviously it would help if people came to the store more times because there will be more opportunities for them to buy things." The company's chief financial officer, John Mulligan, attributed the disappointing earnings to growing pains the company experienced with its rapid Canadian expansion. Looking ahead, he expects Canadian sales to nearly double to $2.6 billion in 2014, with stores approaching a higher annual gross margin rate of approximately 30 per cent. "But clearly, we will see some nearterm volatility until the Canadian business matures," said Mulligan, who is also the retailer's executive vicepresident. Despite the rocky start, the retailer, the second-largest U.S. discount department store operator after Walmart, announced last month that it will open nine more stores in Canada this year. Two locations will be in Mississauga, Ont., with one store each in Toronto, Ottawa and Barrie, Ont.
A Calgary woman has pleaded guilty to manslaughter following the death of an elderly man she pushed at a bus stop. Wai Ho Tam, 79, was out for an afternoon walk when he stopped to rest at a bus stop at MacLeod Trail and 58th Avenue on July 14, 2010. Marie Monique LaPratt, who had been drinking alcohol, knocked off the elderly man's ball cap, according to a court document. Tam retrieved it and sat down again. She started to walk away, but returned
to the bus stop. When Tam stood up, she pushed him and he hit his head on the sidewalk. Tam died nearly a year later. "The assault by Ms. LaPratt resulting in the injury was a significant cause in the chain of events leading to the death of Mr. Tam," according to the court document. LaPratt pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Tuesday and was sentenced to two years in jail. With time served, she has four months left on her sentence.

Did you know that 25% of public schools report that bullying among kids occurs on a daily or weekly basis? And that 1 in 5 high school students report being bullied in the past year? The good news is that because bullying has made national headlines, schools and communities (and even celebrities) are taking a strong anti-bullying stance. You can do your part at home, too. Here are five smart strategies to keep kids from becoming targets and stop bullying that has already started: Talk about it. Talk about bullying with your kids and have other family members share their experiences. If one of your kids opens up about being bullied, praise him or her for being brave enough to discuss it and offer unconditional support. Consult with the school to learn its policies and find out how staff and teachers can address the situation. Remove the bait. If it's lunch money
or gadgets that the school bully is after, you can help neutralize the situation by encouraging your child to pack a lunch or go to school gadget-free. Buddy up for safety. Two or more friends standing at their lockers are less likely to be picked on than a child who is all alone. Remind your child to use the buddy system when on the school bus, in the bathroom, or wherever bullies may lurk. Keep calm and carry on. If a bully strikes, a kid's best defense may be to remain calm, ignore hurtful remarks, tell the bully to stop, and simply walk away. Bullies thrive on hurting others. A child who isn't easily ruffled has a better chance of staying off a bully's radar. bully's parents can be constructive, but it's generally best to do so in a setting where a school official, such as a counselor, can mediate.
Milk is one of the most nutritious choices that kids can make at home or at school. It's a natural, nutrient-packed food that is a "good" or "excellent" source of nine essential nutrients that growing children need for good health and strong bones. Here are some easy tips to follow to ensure your kids get the three servings of milk they need each day. 1. Serve milk ice-cold, the way kids like it, between 35-40 degrees F. Pour it right before serving and promptly return the container to the refrigerator so the milk maintains its fresh taste. 2. Be a role model. When children see you drink milk, they are more likely to drink it, too. 3. Serve milk at meals. Set expectations ahead of time that milk is the beverage of choice at meal times. 4. Serve flavored milk. Kids love it,
and ounce for ounce it has the same nutrients as unflavored milk. 5. Stock the fridge with single-serve containers of white and flavored milk for grab n go. 6. Serve milk in special glasses and with a straw. Let older kids use mix-ins to create a new milk flavor. 7. Let children use a straw to drink the milk left in the bowl after finishing their cereal. 8. Order low-fat flavored milk in kid-friendly, single-serve containers instead of soda when eating out. 9. Remind children to drink milk with School Lunch. Studies show that when children drink milk at lunch, they have higher intakes of several critical nutrients, including calcium, zinc and vitamin A. 10. Send milk money and have children buy milk when they take their lunch to school.

A new study has revealed that an antibody found in the blood of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) may be present long before the onset of the disease and its symptoms. "If our results can be replicated in larger populations, our findings may help to detect MS earlier in a subgroup of patients," study author Viola Biberacher, MD, with Technical University in Munich, Germany, said. "This finding also demonstrates that the antibody development to the KIR4.1 protein, a protein found in some people with MS, precedes the clinical onset of disease suggesting a role of the autoantibody in how the

For the study, 16 healthy blood donors who were later diagnosed with MS were compared to 16 healthy blood donors of the same age and sex who did not develop MS. Scientists looked for a specific antibody to KIR4.1. Samples were collected between two and nine months before the first symptoms of MS appeared. In the study, KIR4.1 antibodies were found in the people with pre-clinical MS several years before the first clinical attack. Concentrations of the antibody varied at different time points during pre-MS in individual people.

Events in the last few days of the week show how much your position has improved. Decisions made then allow you to turn your attention to the nittygritty of change or recent developments. These include working with friends or associates and discussing plans for the future. Do not be disheartened if you go through several problems. It is a time of change and each revision adds something important. Of equal significance is time with loved ones or offspring. They too are changing and need your attention. The week brings you money, but luck forces you to undertake intense discussion; nothing could be more productive. A happy journey comes your way. While you may face minor complications, this is an extraordinary week. Opportunities begin on Monday. In between you run into fresh ideas, new people and places. The trick is to show interest, but commit to nothing until very late in the game. Life has not always been kind to you in the past; now is your turn to make up for lost time. Career offers are positive and lucrative. Your familys health is faint and expenses are heavy.
ARIES:
Opportunities and dilemmas that involve money, travel, legal matters and certain obligations, some of which are out of your hands, are of considerable significance. But these may have to take a back seat to issues of a partnership nature. Some bring understanding; others raise uncomfortable but worthwhile issues. Decide on nothing until after the this week, then act quickly, since the pace picks up remarkably and you feel more than ready to capitalize on what arises. Cloudy trends persuade you to take on emotional targets.
The week is all about practical matters, where situations demand concentration, combined with discrimination. Disciplines that once seemed restrictive are actually welcome. In fact, they make it easier to know how to respond to the remarkable opportunities on this week. Confusion on the next week requires caution, but nothing can undermine this remarkable week. Good news comes your way in business. Usually it is you who introduces friends or colleagues to the latest in people, places or ideas. From late this week the roles are reversed and as much as you enjoy the attention, you are uncomfortable. But let others open doors for you; this is a time of change and the broader the spectrum of your experience the more satisfying is the next chapter of your life. On matters related to the family, home or security, there is some reluctance to give up what is familiar. But further exploration will not increase your anxiety; it will only make you more certain when decision time comes. Be prudent in your dealings with money matters. Opportunities taken are inextricably linked to increased responsibilities. Though things are going well, you could nevertheless begin to feel boxed in. Some obligations are made to yourself and relate to your physical or even emotional well-being; others are duties to others which you really cannot ignore. Situations early this week force you to review these and while your first instinct may be to lighten your load - do not. It is far better that you work with others, sharing the burden. Personal happiness is accented and the more organised you become, the more time you have to enjoy happy moments with
LIBRA:
loved ones. Your career may go far. The events on this week could lead to a crisis or could be a full-fledged opportunity, but with the speed of chance, which remains unclear until the end of the week. So give everything at least one try. Furthermore, confusion could obscure important facts. You are in the midst of a period of remarkable development. While nothing can undermine that, making the best of it requires a more easygoing approach to life than is your habit. Developments on the career scene keep you on your toes. Socially, a hectic phase. AQUARIUS: It is not so much what you do, but achieving a balance between activities out in the world and responsibilities close to home that is your challenge. New people or intriguing developments make work interesting and life a joy; particularly with those you love. But confusion for most of the week could muddy otherwise clear waters; if you are worried or feel slighted, discuss your concerns. Duties of a family or domestic nature could easily dominate you, but you will regret allowing them to do so. Each star brings its own dramas, but also its own remarkable opportunities. Socially, an upward trend.

Wonderful opportunities thread their way through this week. But the planetary emphasis is on obligations to others, or work and duties to yourself, which range from your health and wellbeing, to certain troublesome issues. Initially, these seem uninteresting; however events around the week make you confront obstacles. Some involve partners; many are self-made. On the 1st, putting what you have learned into action proves more than worthwhile. Domestic matters are easy. Journeys and happy holidays come your way.
VIRGO:
During the week you encounter opportunities, intriguing people and even the option of travel. The one thing you cannot have, however, is the outcome of endeavour. Obviously, you are not happy about this. But it is a time to settle problems from the past that could potentially trip you up, while you explore options. Practical, financial and domestic matters need attention, but are easily resolved. After that the worlds your oyster. After this week, decisions must be made. Until then, leave no stone unturned. You may think you are sitting on the fence for some achievement, but that is the only way.
SAGITTARIUS:
CANCER:
The only real mistake you could make is to assume that others know what you feel or want. However obvious to you, recent changes have influenced everyones priorities, including yours. Further, discussions could be as important as any outcome. Remarkable opportunities could leave you better off financially in a new home or even madly in love; there are a few limits, though, to what you can do or experience. So do not wonder what might happen or waste time thinking what the best line of action might be. Travel may come your way.
PISCES:
Only sometime ago the stern and rather humourless Saturn departed from your sign, leaving you with a lighter and less complicated life, and with a kind of new discipline. This week brings opportunities, interesting new ideas and people, but you do not know what to make of them. Take your time, things may not be what they seem; you will later see the finest opportunities fruition. Hasty action achieves nothing. Health causes concern. Children bring good news.

Actress Sharmila Tagore said that content on the small screen is still stereotypical about women as they are mostly shown in kitchen dynamics. Sharmila, 69, said that none of the female protagonist on the small-screen shows are working irrespective of their modern settings. "Content of TV is stereotypical. Their shows still revolve around son preference and kitchen dynamics. No women go for work. There is a complete absence of working women from TV. Today, every women is doing job and managing her family too. Women should be portrayed intelligently in today's time," Sharmila said. Sharmila and her actress daughter Soha Ali Khan were in the city to lend support to veteran playwright Feroz Abbas Khan for his new TV show 'Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon', to be telecast on Doordarshan from March 8. "I have watched the two episodes of the show and I am impressed with it. So, I decided to support the show. I can see a lot of research done by Feroz, who is my good friend. I have seen all his work right from 'Tumhari
Amrita'... Feroz has always been very committed towards his craft," Sharmila said. 'Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon', conceived by the Population Foundation of India (PFI), will address practices such as sex selection, early marriage, early and repeated pregnancies and domestic violence in Indian society. Soha said that male actors too should lend their weight behind women-centric shows because they can create much difference in a patriarchal society. "I will also tell bhai (Saif Ali Khan) and Kareena (Kapoor) to support shows like this because I feel a male voice brings much change in our patriarchal society. I personally believe that I have been a privileged girl child. I had the liberty to choose my career and partner," Soha said. 'Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon' is based on the concept of popular South African TV series 'Soul City'. The series mirrors the real-life stories of social and development challenges faced by poor communities everywhere in the country.

Veteran actress Kirron Kher hopes that "Tere Bin Laden 2" does work wonders for her son Sikander, who has so far failed to make a mark in Bollywood. Sikander is Kirron's son with her first husband Gautam Berry. She is now married to actor Anupam Kher. When asked if the couple plans to relaunch Sikander, Kirron said: "We don't have any plans as such. Waqt se pehle aur kismat se zyada kisiko kuch nahi milta (before time and more than destiny, nobody gets anything)." "Now he is doing 'Tere Bin Laden 2'. Let us see how it works. The makers are very happy with his work and so is Sikander. Let's hope this film works for him," Kirron told reporters here.
Sikander made his Bollywood debut with "Woodstock Villa" in 2008. He was later seen in "Summer 2007", "Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey", "Players" and "Aurangzeb". Meanwhile, Kirron is busy promoting her forthcoming film "Total Siyappa" in which she will be seen sharing screen space with her husband Anupam. "Anupam is very easy going person and he likes to live and let live. He doesn't get into my space and neither does he like it if someone gets into his space. "We were very comfortable working with each other in this film. Anupam has a guest appearance in it," she said. Directed by E. Niwas, "Total Siyappa" also features Ali Zafar and Yami Gautam.

What is the cheapest new car in Canada for 2014? Well, fresh off the 2014 Toronto Auto Show floor, we now know that the 2014 Nissan Micra is ready to do battle against all manufacturers for the title of lowest priced car in Canada... Starting at just $9,998. Slotting in just below the current Versa Note hatchback in terms of both size and price, its well-received Toronto Auto Show debut also hinted at a very quick on-sale date still to come and confirmed the New Micra will only be found in Canadian dealerships (as the Franco-Japanese hatch is not intended for sale in the American market - Sorry Yanks). Of course, that ultra-low $9,998 asking price isn't for a fully loaded model. The Micra will arrive in our Great White North with the choice of three trims - S, SV and SR - allowing buyer's to choose from a five-speed manual or a fourspeed automatic. A 109-horsepower, 1.6-litre four-cylinder is the sole engine
choice. There will also be a number of accessory options that should allow some personalization for the small cars, with Nissan claiming that things like door handle finishers and mirror caps will be available in five different colours (plus chrome) for under $200. "At Nissan, we understand the need in Canada for small, urban-friendly cars that are fun to drive and express their driver's personality. With Micra, we're delivering a proven global vehicle at a very attractive price it's going to make a huge impact on the market," said Christian Meunier, President of Nissan Canada. As our previous story on the cheapest new cars in Canada is quick to point out, Nissan already held one of the least-expensive offerings in North America, the $11,898 Versa Sedan, as the 2014 Nissan Micra (which starts at just $9,998 in Canada) intends to slot in just below that and help Nissan retain its cost effective reign over Canadian consumers.

It seems like North America is obsessed with losing weight, but what happens if you want to gain weight? Some people are naturally quite small and they too feel the effects of bullying. It can be very hard for a person with a fast metabolism to gain body weight. For these individuals, even a few pounds can make the difference. Having too low body weight can cause organ damage, loss of menstruation in women, and bone density loss. Individuals who are recovering from eating disorders may also be interested in learning how to gain weight a healthy way. It is certainly true that drinking sugary sodas and eating french fries all day will make you gain weight, but your body will suffer greatly. The best way to gain weight is by eating natural, whole foods and paying attention to the caloric intake. Here are 11 healthy foods that when eaten right can help you gain healthy weight. 1. Red Meat
is to incorporate ghee into your diet. This Indian ingredient is ultra clarified butter. It is safe to use when cooking at high temperatures, unlike butter which will burn. Ghee also has concentrated flavor, so you can use less when cooking. Enjoy eggs fried in butter or ghee for a tasty and nutritious breakfast. 9. Nuts
6. Granola Nuts are a great snack for gaining weight. They are full of fat and nutrients, but also contain a great deal of fiber. Eating only a few nuts can keep you full for hours. Not all nuts are equal for fiber though. Almonds are a great choice, while macadamia nuts are very high in fat. Mixed nuts are a great option because you can get the nutritional benefit of many varieties in one snack. Add nuts to your salads, on top of Asian dishes, and in your breakfast cereals and oatmeal. 10. Cheese
One simple substitution you can make when trying to gain weight is swapping your skim milk for whole milk. Its only 60 calories more a glass as the fat is left in. When you keep the fat in milk, the vitamins and nutrients stay in the solution. Whole milk is high in vitamin D and A. Add whole milk where ever you would use skim, such as in oatmeal, cereal, sauces, or just as a glass of milk. If you enjoy milk in your coffee, you can also use cream here. 4. Tropical Fruit
Granola is a great cereal to enjoy if you are trying to gain weight. This tasty snack is made from rolled oats, sugar, and butter. Dried fruit and nuts can be added. You can buy granola pre-made, but its easy to make at home too! Enjoy granola topped with thick yogurt, fruit, and a drizzle of honey. This breakfast will be high in protein from the yogurt, filled with fiber from the oatmeal, and sugar from the fruit. 7. Whole Wheat Bread
If you are trying to gain weight, enjoy some red meat. Steak contains a ton of protein and iron. Not all steak cuts are made equal though. You want the fatty cuts where the meat is marbled. These cuts of meat will contain more calories, but theyll also be way more delicious too! Look for rib-eye, t-bone, New York strip, and beef tenderloin. Red meat is high in cholesterol, so enjoy it with a healthy diet. Combining it with an unhealthy diet high in saturated fats could cause health effects. 2. Peanut Butter
Peanut butter is packed with protein and fats, making it a great choice for people trying to gain weight the healthy way. One tablespoon contains around 100 calories and has 4 grams
An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but tropical fruit can help you gain weight. Fruits like mango, papaya, bananas, and pineapple are amazing choices. They are full of natural sugars and can give you great energy. Adding in servings of fruit into your diet is a great step to gaining weight. No one ever became fat by eating fruit, so dont worry about eating too much! If you find it difficult to eat enough fruits and vegetables in a day, try blending them to make a delicious smoothie. 5. Avocado These delicious green vegetables are an excellent way to add healthy fats to your diet. One half of an avocado contains 140 calories, but also contain high levels of potassium, folic acid, and vitamin E. Avocado also are filled with B vitamins. Enjoy avocado added to
Eating healthy bread products is a great way to start gaining weight. If youre adding bread to your diet, look for whole grains. While white bread is what we all grew up with, its not the best for your health. By refining the wheat so much, we strip the nutrients out of it. Instead, opt for whole grain varieties. These contain a fiber and minerals that are missing in white bread. It will help you stay full for longer, and give you sustained energy. 8. Butter
Cheese is one of the favorite foods in North America. You can add cheese into almost any dish. It has all the nutritional benefits of milk products. Most cheeses are high in fat, making it a good product to have if you are trying to gain weight. Cheese comes in many delicious varieties, so pairing a cheese to your meal is a fun experience. Try goat cheese with eggs, Swiss with roasted chicken, and Parmesan on top of asparagus. On its own, cheese also makes a great snack because its high in protein. 11. Potatoes One of the first things people cut when trying to lose weight are carbohydrates. Thus, add them back to your diet when you are trying to gain weight! The key is choosing carbohydrates that have nutritional value. Potatoes are a great choice because theyre high in protein (really!), full of fiber, and contain a ton of vitamin C. Eat potatoes with the skin on for optimum nutrition. Once theyre peeled, the protein is cut in half.
Nothing beats the taste of butter for cooking. It is full of flavor and good calories. Butter does have saturated fats, so enjoy it in moderation. A good option

no place for fraud and corruption in sports. This workshop will be a vital one for Fiji FA in terms of knowing, fully understanding the situation and acting accordingly when the need arises, added Patel. The conference will also demonstrate various match-fixing scenarios and the tools developed by INTERPOL to combat match-fixing and fight corruption in sports, and the importance of training and education. "Organized crime and criminals view match-fixing as a high-profit low-risk venture. Given their global reach it is essential that all those involved in combating this crime work together, and INTERPOL is committed to supporting these efforts," said Julie Norris of INTERPOL's Integrity in Sport unit.
After more than six years away from WWE, "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan is officially back with the company that facilitated his meteoric rise three decades ago. Hogan appeared at the very beginning of Monday's episode of Raw in a move that was announced on Feb. 21. The WWE's Twitter account welcomed him back with a YouTube video of his entrance song. According to WWE, Hogan's first official role with the company will be hosting WrestleMania XXX in New Orleans. Hogan is arguably the most popular and recognizable figure in the history of professional wrestling, so there is a great deal of excitement surrounding his return to WWE. It remains to be seen what type of role the 60-yearold Hogan will have beyond hosting WrestleMania, but most would probably agree that he is back where he belongs. Vince McMahon is one of many who feel that way as he expressed his excitement regarding Hogan's return. "We are thrilled that Hulk Hogan has returned home to WWE," McMahon said. "It's fitting to have him help us celebrate 30 years of WrestleMania and usher in a new era with the launch of WWE Network." Not surprisingly, Hogan echoed McMahon's sentiments. "Words cannot express how excited I am to be back in the WWE family," Hogan said. "I only have one question for the WWE Universe: Whatcha you gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild as the host of WrestleMania XXX?" It's possible that WWE and professional wrestling as a whole
that only represents a small piece of the pie. Hogan is a guy who can potentially be used in an on-screen capacity throughout the year, and he will also provide a huge boost in terms of merchandising, media attention and so many other things that fans often fail to recognize. Over the past several years WWE has become more flexible from a contract perspective as they have accommodated the likes of Brock Lesnar, Batista, Chris Jericho, The Rock, The Undertaker and a host of others. WWE almost certainly won't allow Hogan to influence booking decisions like he did during his time in TNA, and that is unquestionably a good thing. Hogan still has a place in professional wrestling, and leave it to WWE to figure out exactly what that place is.
