Resident of the Month - Robert J.

Robert Jacobson has been living here at Carefree for a little under two years now. He was born on June 22, 1923 and grew up in NorthCentral Minnesota. Both of his parents were 100% Norwegian, so the Norwegian culture was imbedded into their daily life. There were plenty of lakes around where he lived, so naturally he loves to fish (especially for northern pikes!). The household growing up was quite busy, too, with three brothers and 5 sisters. As a career, Robert was a sawyer in a sawmill. He served in the Navy during WWII on an anti-submarine wife Luverna for several years, and together they had one son and three daughters. They have given him too many grand kids to count, great-grand kids, and even great-great grand kids! Here at Carefree, Robert can be most often found playing cribbage with Rick! Congratulations, Robert, for being our Resident of the Month for March!

mission aboard the Patrol Craft 620. While serving, he got to see all corners of the world by sea. His favorite places, perhaps reflective of his parents stories of their homeland, were the coastlines of Norway and Sweden. Robert was married to his

May 2012 Carefree Living started a Resident of the Month program. This program is in place to recognize our residents who put smiles on the faces of others and who help make Carefree Living a little brighter each day.

March Celebrates
On top of St. Patricks Day (...where everybody is a little Irish!), March is also National Social Worker Month. Please take this month to specially thank our social services staff, Brandi Blais and Deb Kampa. Thank you both for all your hard work, dedication, and care! March is also National Craft Month, and in honor of this we will be hosting a Carefree Living-St. Cloud Show & Tell! Residents and staff are encouraged to bring their treasured projects theyve completed (or are

still working on) down to share with everybody. Our show & tell will be on Tuesday, March 25th at 2:00. We hope to see you there, hobbies in hand!

History Corner with Ron

The 4th day of March, 1933, will always be looked upon as one of the most important dates in American history. On that day Franklin Delano Roosevelt was inaugurated as President of the United States, and he brought to the task an entirely new concept of government. During the countless ages that preceded him, it had been acknowledged by one and all that the citizens of a country had a duty to support the governmentprincipally by paying taxes. There had never been so much as a whisper of a suggestion that perhaps the government had a corresponding obligation to be concerned about the welfare of its citizensleast of all their economic welfare. left us baffled and bewildered. We now understand the need to find through government the instrument of our united purpose to solve for the individual the ever-rising problems of a complex civilization. * The first step in that governmental response was the creation of make-work agencies to give employment to those 25% of the work force who were still unable to find a job. When all the dams, bridges, airports and post offices had been built that needed to be built, make-work was converted into cash payments of various kinds. This led to the abuse of government aid by those who know how to push the right buttons; but the principles enunciated by President Roosevelt have been the cornerstone of domestic policy, at all levels of government, right down to the present day.
*As stated in FDRs second inaugural address on July 20, 1937

FDR during one of his famous fireside chats

But Roosevelt had looked out upon the country as it revealed itself since the crash of its economy in 1929 and had discovered one-third of a nation illhoused, ill-clad, ill-nourishedrepeated attempts at the solution (of their problems) without the aid of government had

Introducing
Carefree Living-St. Clouds new and improved recycling program!

CANDLELIGHT DINNER
There will be a candlelight dinner on Monday, March 17th at 5:00. Live musical entertainment provided by local church singing group, Friends in Harmony. In honor of St. Patricks Day we will be serving St. Paddys Irish Beef over Mashed Potatoes.

Did you know that recycling just 16 pop cans saves the equivalent of one gallon of gasolines emissions? And that recycling 9 newspapers saves 1 tree?
Large recycling bins can be found in the stairwells on each floor. The bins are singlesort, and there are flyers telling you what can and cannot be recycled above each bin. Questions? See Nikki or Kelvin.

Newsletter suggestions or submissions? Activity ideas? See Nikki Field, Life Enrichment Coordinator!
