La Comunidad de San Luis Rey

Getting to Know the Retreat Center

Our vision at the Retreat Center is to open the minds and hearts of people who come here to the possibilities for learning and experiencing the Franciscan Way of being in the world.
The Retreat Center team ensures guests enjoy their stay. Joan Loyek is the go-to person for everything from making sure our meeting spaces get setup and meals are served. Kaitlin Bandy, our Executive Chef, and her team makes sure the meals are hot and delicious. Ariana Quintero, in the front office, keeps us cool. Always calm and patient, Ariana meets people at the desk, answers phone calls, and assists us greatly. Kathryn Causee manages the outside groups renting our center for meetings and retreats. Pat Julian manages the programs and retreats the Mission puts on for the community. Our teamwork reminds us of the story about two men riding through dense forest at a fair clip, each on a different path. In one instant they almost collide. One calls out to the other, Where are you going for heavens sake? St. Francis calls back, Id go anywhere for heavens sake. Thats us. Wed go anywhere and do anything for heavens sake, for our guests sake. There are many opportunities for you and your loved ones to enjoy the Retreat Center. We welcome high schools, 12-step groups, parish groups, and most any non-profit organization. Consider hosting your next meeting or retreat at the center. Or, you might want to spend a night away from it all on a Private Retreat. If you cant spend a night, you are welcome to join us on a Quiet Monday. Spiritual Direction is also available. Please call for more information and to set an appointment. For Lent, we are offering a Mini-Retreat on Ash Wednesday with Fr. Larry Dolan, OFM. The Triduum Retreat for Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday is with Fr. Matt Tumulty, OFM; overnight and commuter options are available. We hope you come see us soon! Blessed Sacrament Chapel Dedicated in The Serra Center

By Bill Pinella

A couple of months ago it was a non-descript closet. Today its the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The room is yet another small, but very distinct and important step as the Serra Center continues on its transformation trail from gathering center to the main MSLRP worship area. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel will be open on weekends and the Blessed Sacrament will be reserved there between Masses. If Lupe Rios was the project manager of this twomonth undertaking then Jenny Flynn was the chief architect. The body of Christ had been in the sacristy, Rios explained. But thats where the priests come to change into their vestments. It needed to be in a holier, more sacred place than that. With his talented eye for design and color, Rios was responsible for painting all the stars on the ceiling. His enthusiasm and leadership were key in moving this project forward, Flynn explained. And the staff from the MSLRP shop who helped prepare the room for painting and installed all the tiles we could not have done this without them. I just let Lupe and Jenny go for it, Father Adrian said after the Sunday blessing, and I dont recall having ever blessed a former closet, he added with a laugh. But its not a closet any longer. They did a very nice job with limited space. Of all the volunteers who helped, Jenny also received help and guidance from Linda Causee. She managed to find us a beautiful and economical wood tabernacle - tabernacles are usually extremely expensive and this wood one fit in beautifully with our designs, Flynn explained. And also the metal baroque crucifix that is hung in the chapel. Linda has been consulted along the way and helped with the initial planning. Rios estimates the entire project cost $2,000. Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved negotiations were made to keep this cost low. If you would like to make a donation to help defray the costs of the project contact Lupe Rios at (760)547-0709. Following is a list of believers who donated their time and talents: Father Adrian Peelo, OFM, Lupe Rios, Jenny Flynn, Linda Causee, Lee Bickford, Javier Figueroa, Fidel Flores, Juan Nava, Lupe Urquidez, Paciano Rivadeneyra, Alice Vitug, Ita-Livi Suarez and Charlene Borromeo.

St. Clare & Blessed Sacrament Chapels in the Retreat Center

Through a generous gift, the friars reconfigured the old Retreat Center Chapel into two chapels. The St. Clare Chapel and the Blessed Sacrament Chapel will be utilized by both the Retreat Center and the Franciscan School of Theology. In keeping with the Missions aesthetic, wall motifs from the Historic Church were incorporated into both chapels. Additionally the original chapel doors and stained glass were also utilized.

Peyri Court Update

Peyri Court, located on the west side of the Historic Church, is preparing for repair and renovation. This project has several goals, mainly the repair and restoration of the three historic fountains, the repair of the courtyard floor for safety issues and the repair of the drainage system. Funds for the restoration of the three fountains were generously raised by the Questers. Additional funding for the entire project was provided by the Heritage Ball 2012 committees efforts and we have received funding from a few grants and foundations.

Peyri Court circa 1892 before the first restoration.

We are proceeding through historical reviews and city permitting, continuing to work with architects, historians and other experts to advance this project.

Secular Franciscans - Who are they?

Fresh off of our Epiphany celebration, the San Luis Rey fraternity of Secular Franciscans will begin meeting for mass and communal prayer, in addition to our monthly social gatherings and on-going religious formation. This will begin March 2, 2014. Our fraternity continues to grow, with new and vibrant members seeking to be a part of our family. As a larger group, Secular Franciscans throughout the Southern California region are actively engaging in part of a broader push to Build Family amongst our professed lay brothers and sisters in the Third Order, as well as with the Friars and Poor Clares. Spirit filled individuals interested in being part of Pope Francis call to Wake up the World and bring the Gospel to Life, should contact our Formation Director, Sandy Baden, at 760-305-8984.

Announcing the St. Clare Mausoleum

Located in the Old Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery, the St. Clare mausoleum will have only thirty spaces available. Even though construction has not yet started, it is already almost 50% sold out! This small, personal and intimate mausoleum is unlike anything you will find elsewhere; most mausoleums are huge structures that hold hundreds of spaces. Not only is there limited space available for purchase, this mausoleum faces the area known as the Historic Cemetery in the shadow of our 200-year old Church. If you are interested in purchasing a space, please contact the cemetery office for an appointment: 760. 231. 8445, ext. 133 or ext. 139.
