LCD Monitors Despite a market demand of 170 million units of LCD monitors per year, the gloomy economic outlook and uncertainty over Hewlett-Packard's (HP) move concerning its Personal Systems Group have deter vendors from releasing new orders to their OEM partners, sources in the industry said. Shortage of labor in China and fluctuation of exchange rates have also added to the vendors' concerns. OEM makers have suffered the impact as a result. TPV Technology reportedly has will ship more than 60 million LCD monitors in 2011 while LCD TV shipments are expected to reach 12-14 million units. TPV's share price fell to a mere HK$2.27 (US$0.29) recently on September 21, 2011 as a result of a lack of confidence in the market.

Taiwan & China focused on domestic sales The prevailing business model for businesses on both sides of the Taiwan Strait will shift from current joint efforts to promote exports to focus on domestic sales in China in the future as China has transformed its status from being a world factory to a world market, according to Terry Guo, chairman of Foxconn Electronics. Eyeing the vast business opportunities that will come along with the implementation of China's 12th fiveyear development plan, Foxconn is strengthening its deployments in a total of 20 segments in China, Guo said, noting that Foxconn plans to expand manpower at a software development unit it set up in Nanjing from 1,000 staff at present, to 5,000. Foxconn is also expected to soon finalize its plans to cooperate with China-based polysilicon and solar wafer provider GCL-Poly Energy Holdings to set up a joint venture in Jiangsu, China, according to industry sources.

Embedded market The market for embedded computer systems, which already generates more than US$1 trillion in revenue annually, will double in size over the next four years, according to a report about to be released by research company IDC. Much of this growth will be propelled by more sophisticated, cloud-connected embedded systems, which will have faster chips, better connectivity and more advanced operating systems and analytical software, IDC predicted. IDC referred to these systems as "Intelligent Systems," and they will grow from 19 percent of all unit shipments of major electronic systems in 2010 to more than 33 percent in 2015. Due to be released next week, IDC's report, "Intelligent Systems: The Next Big Opportunity," states that this year more than 1.8 billion embedded systems will be shipped, which will create $1 trillion in revenue for component makers, software companies and integrators. By 2015, more than 4 billion units will be shipped, which will create $2 trillion in

shipments of communication devices and PCs in August remained unchanged compared to July, shipments of consumer electronics fell short of original expectation, which was the mainly reason for the revenue decline, Foxconn said. Industry observers said Foxconn's shipments of iPhone 4 may have decreased in August because of inventory adjustments ahead of the launch of the new iPhone model.

Iphone5 Production Foxconn is reported to be assembling 150,000 iPhone 5s every day, according to reports. Digitimes claims that shipments could reach six million in September, citing industry sources.

ICT Market TabletPC The tablet market is growing faster than expected, new research released today by IDC has found. According to the research firm, 13.6 million tablets were shipped worldwide in the second quarter, representing an 88.9 percent gain over the first quarter of 2011. Even more impressive, that figure was up a whopping 303.8 percent compared to the second quarter of 2010. Such strong performance has prompted IDC to revise its PC shipment forecast up. The research firm now believes that 62.5 million tablets will hit store shelves this year, rather than its previous projection of 53.5 million units. IDC's findings on tablet shipments stand in stark contrast to what the company announced yesterday about PC shipments. The research firm said that total PC shipments this year will only be up 2.8 percent, compared to 2010. What's more, PC shipment growth in 2012 will only hit 9.3 percent. Companies will ship 60 million media tablets in 2011, and 74 percent of those will be Apples iPads, according to an August forecast by IHS Inc. The global market is expected to rise to 275.3 million units in 2015, with Apple forecast to claim 43.6 percent of the market at that point.

Tablet PC production in Brazil A Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) plant in Brazil is ready to start producing Apple's iPads with shipments to begin in December, according to a recent report by Brazilbased UOL, citing Brazil's minister of science and technology Aolizio Mercadante. The plant reportedly is a joint venture between Foxconn and the government of Brazil, with Foxconn contributing a capital of US$12 million. Industry watchers in Taiwan originally expected the plant to kick off commercial operations in the first quarter of 2012. As Apple is expected to launch its new generation iPad in early 2012, the Foxconn plant in Brazil is likely to begin production with iPad 3, the sources asserted. In other news, Foxconn has decided to suspend a plan to issue NT$6 billion (US$202.53 million) worth of corporate bonds as interest rates offered by investors were not up to the company's expectations, according to Foxconn.

E-readers IDC also took a quick look at e-readers. The research firm found that 5.4 million e-readers shipped last quarter, down 9

percent compared to the first quarter of 2011. However, year-over-year growth was 167 percent. Amazon's Kindle led the market with 51.7 percent market share during the second quarter, followed by Barnes & Noble's Nook at 21.2 percent share. Looking ahead, IDC says that the e-reader space will grow quite rapidly over the next two quarters, reaching total 2011 shipments of 27 million units. The research firm originally expected 16.2 million ereaders to hit store shelves this year. MEMS sensors for smartphones & Tablets The market for MEMS sensor and audio devices for smartphones and tablets will reach more than $1.5 billion in 2016, a report said. The ABI Research report also said MEMS vendors range from large multi-national and multiproduct suppliers such as STMicroelectronics, Bosch, Texas Instruments, and Freescale Semiconductors, down to suppliers focused on the MEMS market with relatively small product portfolios such as VTI, InvenSense, and Memstech.

Panel Industry Sony, Toshiba, Hitachi JV in Japonese Panel Industry As expected, Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi have agreed to spin off and merge their LCD display businesses, to create Japan Display KK, the worlds largest maker of mobile screens, to fend off competition from Korea and Taiwan. The transaction should be completed early next year, subject to antitrust approval, and will be 70% owned by the government backed Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, which will invest 200 billion yen ($2.6 billion).

Corning Capital Expenditures Corning recently announced that it expects its display technologies division to hit a rough patch in the second half this year due to concerns about a drop in customer demand for LCDs. Cornings display technologies division manufactures glass substrates for LCDs that are used primarily in notebook computers, flat panel desktop monitors, and LCD televisions. In the LCD market, Corning mainly competes with Asahi Glass, Nippon Electric Glass, and Avan Strate, Inc. Corning expects its overall capital expenditures in 2012 to stand at around $1.9-2 billion, lower from the $2.4 billion in 2011. After 2012, a migration to thin glass will help reduce the need for new and large capacity additions thereby leading to lower capital expenditures in the display technologies division. This can accelerate the decline in capex as a percentage of EBITDA compared to our current projected decline over the midterm.

Novaled (Dresden, Germany) has been operational since 2003 and has developed OLED materials for display and lighting applications. The firm's PIN OLED and other technologies are based on more than 400 patents granted or pending, which provide Novaled with a strong intellectual property position in the OLED field. PIN OLED aims at reducing the energy consumption while offering longer lifetimes compared with other companies' products. LG Display iPad2 Panel Quality issues Display manufacturer LG was reportedly struggling to meet production targets for Apple's iPad 2 LCD due to quality issues (particularly a "light leak" issue noted in early models). According to a report from DigiTimes, LG has solved those issues and is back to cranking out displays for Apple as fast as it can make them. LG reportedly built 4 million displays for the iPad 2 in August, and it's expected to build another 4 million this month. Considering that iPads don't usually hang around on shelves for too long, the implications for Apple's quarterly iPad sales are pretty staggering. If Apple is really selling 4 million of these things every month, that puts the iPad on a very rapid track to being the bestselling consumer electronics device of all time. According to DigiTimes's source, "Apple's iPad 2 shipments are expected to reach 12-15 million units in third-quarter 2011, which will benefit its suppliers." No doubt it will be a benefit to Apple too.

Tablet PC Panels Chimei Innolux (CMI) has become a major tablet panel supplier after taking up over 10% of the market in August 2011, according to Displaybank. The research firm said that CMI's share of the tablet panel market reached 11% for the first time since it began increasing shipments to tablet applications three months ago. CMI converted part of its 5G capacity to produce tablet applications at the end of 2010, but its shipments only began to see meaningful increases in May 2011 after some quality issues were solved, said Displaybank, adding CMI became a supplier of 9.7-inch panels for Apple's iPad in June 2011. AU Optronics (AUO), on the other hand, has maintained a steady 10% share of the tablet panel market since March 2011, Displaybank said. AUO focuses on 10.1-inch panels for Android tablets. Korean makers accounted for almost 80% of the world's tablet panel supply in August but are facing growing competition from Japanese makers such as Sharp, Displaybank said, adding that Taiwanese makers may also feel the impact in near future.

panels over 40-inch, the company indicated. Currently, Taiwan-based TFT-LCD panel maker Chi Mei Innolux (CMI) accounts for 85-90% of Chi Mei Materials' revenues and Chunghwa Picture Tubes and HannStar Display a combined 10-15%. As Chi Mei Materials' supply occupies less than 50% of CMI's demand for polarizer films, there is room for CMI to increase order volumes, Chi Mei Materials indicated. In addition to polarizer films, Chi Mei Materials has developed OCA (optical clear adhesive) and begun small-volume shipments as well as polarizer films used in IPS panels which are under product certification. With four existing production lines for polarizer films, Chi Mei Materials will not expand capacity in the near future but will consider increasing production capacity through improving manufacturing processes when the existing capacity is fully utilized, the company indicated. CPT Business LCD panel maker Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) has posted total revenues of NT$29.76 billion (US$1.02 billion) for first-half 2011, declining 25% compared with the same period in 2010. Loss per share reached NT$0.84, compared to loss of NT$0.69 in the same period last year. CPT's cost of goods sold totaled NT$3.32 billion in the first half, resulting in a negative gross margin of 12.72%. The company reported an operating loss of NT$6.4 billion. CPT's shipments to the notebook, e-paper backplane, and smartphone segments are expected to grow with the coming of the peak season in second-half 2011.

Flat Panel Market Shipments in August Overall shipments of large-size LCD panels in August 2011 climbed slightly on month. Panels for TVs, monitors, and notebooks all also showed small increases. Demand from emerging markets was the main driver for the growth, according to industry sources. WitsView statistics showed that panel shipments to the notebook and monitor segments rose nearly 5% and 8.5%, respectively, on month in August 2011. The overall shipments of large-area panels climbed about 5% on-month in August. In Taiwan, AU Optronics's (AUO) total large panel shipments exceeded 10 million units in August, up 1.9% compared with July 2011. The maker's small- to medium- size panels also rose 13.9% on month in shipments for the month. Chimei Innolux's (CMI) large-size panel shipments slid 3.4% on month in August. Its small- to mediumsize panels climbed 24.2% on-month in August. Sources attributed the shipment growth in August to rising demand in emerging markets but added that panel sales will decline in the third and fourth quarters, due to weak demand from the TV and notebook sectors. Some panel makers already lowered their shipment goals as early as first-half 2011 while others have been reducing panel production in the third quarter, sources pointed out. panel orders from notebook makers can be expected in the fourth quarter, they said. Panel Prices in September Prices of large-size TFT-LCD panels have reached a record low in September 2011, with 18.5-42-inch panels dropping US$1-3 from the August levels, according to Displaybank. Price for 18.5-inch monitor panels fell US$1 on month to US$54 per unit. Price for 15.6-inch notebook panels stands at US$43 per unit, down US$1 compared to the August level. Panel prices for 32- and 42-inch TVs each fell US$3 on month to US$134 and US$215 per unit, respectively, according to Displaybank. The financial crises in the US and Europe and the ensuing economic uncertainly have deterred demand for panels. Vendors in China are conservative about sales during the upcoming National Day shopping season in October, the research firm said. But new investments in large-size panels have continued, promising to worsen the oversupply situation, Displaybank noted. BOE Technology's 8G production plant has ramped up production. China Star OptoELectronics Technology (CSOT), a company under The Creative Life (TCL), will kick off its operation in fourth-quarter 2011. An LG Display (LGD) 8G plant is planning mass production in 2012. The supplydemand imbalance would send panel prices tumbling further until they reach the cash cost levels, Displaybank said.

CMI's shipments to the segment climbed 24.2% to 39.84 million units. AUO, CMI, and CPT have posted consolidated revenues of NT$33.27 billion (US$1.13 billion), NT$42 billion, and NT$5.17 billion for August, with on-month growths of 1.6%, 2%, and 10%, respectively, as a result of increases in shipments of both small- to medium-size and large-size panels. HannStar's non-consolidated revenues of August declined 5.35% on month to NT$3.22 billion, due to reduced shipments of large-size panels. CPT said sales grew on rising demand for e-paper backplane, telematic and handset applications and revenues from touch sensors also contributed to the growth. The company said collaboration with E Ink has been a stable source of orders. Digital TV Broadcom has quietly shut down its digital TV operations, including offices from Toronto to Pennsylvania to China. The closures began earlier this week (Sept. 19), EE Times has confirmed. Broadcom reportedly plans to call it quits from the chip market for TVs and Blu-ray players due to low gross margins and return on equity (ROE) generated from the product lines a move which is likely to benefit Taiwanbased IC design houses MediaTek and MStar Semiconductor, according to industry sources in Taiwan. Since Broadcom has been bundling the sale of its TV and Blu-ray chips, MediaTek will benefit most from Broadcon's possible move as the local handset solution vendor also produces chips for TVs and Blu-ray players, the sources noted. MStar may benefit less than MediaTek if Broadcom withdraws from the TV and Blu-ray chip markets as the company currently focuses mainly on solutions for handsets, TVs and set-top boxes (STBs). Broadcom is also one of the top vendors for STB chips globally, and it remains to be seen if the company will also withdraw from the STB chip market, the sources said.
