3. TSUNAMI:
Tsunami anther Natural disaster where Mercy Malaysia has played its own key role in the rebuilding of affected areas. In the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami was a major tipping point for the organization. We were the first international organization to arrive (in Aceh) and it was publicized by the international media. Suddenly, people realized there was MERCY Malaysia, Dr Jemilah said. MERCY Malaysia deployed teams to Aceh and Sri Lanka, as well as assisting the tsunami survivors on the home front in Penang, Malaysia. A book was launched in 2005, entitled "A Time To Heal: A Reflection of Mercy Malaysia's Response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami" to commemorate the disaster that struck on Dec 26, 2004. The coffee table book relates the experiences of MERCY Malaysia's relief workers in Malaysia, Indonesia's Aceh province and Sri Lanka. The rebuilding of the houses for the affected people of tsunami of Kampong Weu Raya proved to be a good learning experience for the organization. Identifying actual boundaries was a difficult task, as surviving villagers had to delineate the plots of land where their houses used to be. Once construction started, the team of 30 skilled villagers and 180 construction workers from Medan managed to build at a rate of one house a day, using shorea wood and concrete. Originally designed to be 36sq metres, each unit was later expanded to 52sq metres. In May, 2011 Mercy Malaysia sent Medical teams and teams for the rehabilitations of Japan where 10meters high tsunami lashed the northern part of the country.

For Iraq in particular, MERCY Malaysia allocated RM1 million in medical and humanitarian aid, and collaborated with Islamic Relief to transport three trucks of humanitarian aid to Falluja 8. CYCLONE : In 2008, MERCY Malaysia also responded to Myanmar to aid the survivors of Cyclone Nargis
First Phase - Emergency Response A life-saving phase, its aim is to ensure that an effective response - rescue efforts, fire fighting, emergency medical assistance and an evacuation procedure - is in place when a disaster has taken place. 6
Second Phase - Recovery This phase involves rehabilitation and disaster-resilient reconstruction efforts as well as appropriate land use planning, industrial rehabilitation planning and livelihood support.
Third Phase - Prevention/ Mitigation This phase focuses on efforts to prevent or mitigate damage when a disaster strikes. Among the activities related to this phase are the utilization of seismic resistant technology for rebuilding or retro-fitting, the construction of dikes, replanting of mangroves, forestation and the construction and operation of meteorological observation systems to help prevent and mitigate damage in the event of an earthquake, flood, landslide or storm.
Final Phase Preparedness/ Readiness As it is important for any country to be prepared in the event of a disaster, this phase is crucial as it places the importance of hazard maps, food and material stockpiling as well as the preparation of emergency kits, all vital factors that help to minimise the impact of a disaster.
The risk of disasters and its adverse impact can be reduced effectively if balanced attention is placed on all phases of the disaster management cycle.
