2.0 Methodology Method Questionnaire How will you carry the method out?

I will take a survey of 30 people in 3 different places ten in each place. I will do this because I think it will give a good range of people to get a average opinion of public transport. I will mark each place on the map. I will ask a variety of ages and both males and females questions to ensure that I get a good spread of results. My questionnaire will consist of both multiple choice questions and open questions to help perceive a better average of everyones opinions. Sample size and location I will take a sample size of 10 people in each location because I think that is a good amount of people to be able to make a general opinion. I will take one sample next to the bus station, one sample next in the market, and one sample next to WH Smiths. How will this help you answer the key question? This will help me answer the key question because it will help me to understand how many people use public transport and why they do/dont use it. It also shows peoples views on systems around Halifax to promote public transport and whether it is helping to improve sustainability around Halifax. This will show me how popular public transport is, the public view if it, and how the council in Halifax is trying to promote it. All of this will give me an idea of how successful Halifax is in trying to promote public transport. The pedestrian count near the bus station and car park will give me an idea about how many people using those modes of transport and how popular it is compared to cars. This shows how well Halifax is promoting public transport and if it is being effective. It also shows how busy Halifax is, which could link to the amount of public transport there is available, Looking at the photos I will be able to see how many people use that mode of transport and what makes it appealing e.g. how much rubbish there is in each area. This will help to give me an idea of how appealing it is for people to Problems Some people might not want to answer the questions and most middle aged people will be at work so I might be biased towards older people.

Pedestrian count

I will stand in a certain place and mark it on a map. I will then count the number of people that walk past in a 5 minute period. I will mark each persons sex and age onto a tally which will help to record my data.

I will take a 5 minute sample in 3 different places. Morning I will take a sample in the piece Hall Afternoon I will take a sample in next to the bus station I will take one sample near Westgate Arcade

The ages of people were hard to predict this means that my results could be inaccurate.

Photographs

I am going to take a picture of different I will take a photo at: objects and places that relate to the aspects of The main bus the investigation and will help me to answer station the key question. Halifax train station Costs for travel by train

The problems could be that it would be difficult to photograph the area and include everything.

Individual method one

I will take an environmental survey of 4 different areas in Halifax. The environmental survey will consist of giving 4 different areas a score of -3 to 3, in the areas of: Graffiti, Rubbish and Cleanliness.

A car park Different signs that are significant in my investigation Any areas that people are able to park environmentally friendly vehicles. E.g. bicycles I will take one survey in the bus station. I will take one sample in two different car parks. I will take one sample in Halifaxs train station.

either park their cars in a car park or use public transport.

Individual method two

I am going to locate different car parks in Halifax.

I will go around and note down where it is on a map when I find one.

This survey will help me to view the different environmental conditions that different areas in Halifax are in. This will help to give me an idea of how appealing it is for people to go to these different areas, which may influence their opinion of public transport in and around Halifax. This will help me to see how accessible each car park is and how far away from the town centre it is and if it will affect if people will park there. This will show me what initiative people have for using their cars, due to how accessible the areas to park your car are in relation to your workplace/where you are trying to reach in Halifax. I will also be able to see how popular the car parks are, which could give me an indication of how many people commute to Halifax by using their car.

The problems are that different areas will have a different number of people so that could affect the condition that they are in.

I might not find all the car parks which have the impact of making my results inaccurate, so my conclusion may be invalid.
