In general, the simple present expresses events or situations in present time, simple present use Routines, habits,daily activities,general truths/factual statements. Simple present tense is used for the following purposes : 1. It is to express that something happens repeatedly or for habitual actions or daily activities. Example : Yogi goes to campus late every Monday and Thursday. I usually go to the market at weekends. Paul wakes up at 5 in the morning. 2. It is to talk about things in general. Example : Children likes candy. Nurses look after the patients in hospitals. 3. It is to say that something is true in general or factual statement. Example : The earth goes round the sun. 3rd person singular 1. In general, the third person singular is formed by adding an s to the base verb. work = He works 2. Verbs ending in ss,x,ch,sh,o add es to the third person singular. dress fix watch wash go = She dresses

= He fixes = She watches T.V. = She washes = It goes !

3. Verbs ending in consonant + y, changes the y to i and add es Consonant + y i + es: cry cries, fly flies, terrify - terrifies The words always, usually, often, sometimes, or never show how often the activity happen.

Example of Simple Present Tense: A. Affirmative/ Positive Sentences I am Civil Engineering students in UNESA (saya mahasiswa teknik sipil di UNESA) Mrs. Ari Tonang speaks English every day.

(Bu Ari Tonang berbicara bahasa inggris setiap hari) My brother and I like watching TV every evening. (saudara saya dan saya suka menonton TV setiap malam) Toni usually updates his status on facebook every morning. (Toni biasanya memperbarui status di facebook setiap pagi)

B. Negative sentence I am not Civil Engineering student in UNESA (saya bukan mahasiswa teknik sipil di UNESA) Mrs. Ari Tonang does not speak English every day. (Bu Ari Tonang tidak berbicara bahasa inggris setiap hari) My brother and I do not like watching TV every evening. (saudara saya dan saya tidak suka menonton TV setiap malam) Toni usually does not update his status on facebook every morning. (Toni biasanya tidak memperbarui status di facebook setiap pagi)

C. Intterogative sentence Do you Civil Engineering students in UNESA? (apakah kamu mahasiswa teknik sipil di UNESA?) Does Mrs. Ari Tonang speak English every day? (apakah Bu Ari Tonang berbicara bahasa inggris setiap hari??) Do my brother and I like watching TV every evening? (apakah saudara saya dan saya suka menonton TV setiap malam?) Does Toni usually update his status on facebook every morning. (apakah Toni biasanya memperbarui status di facebook setiap pagi ) Example simple present tense in daily conversation : Conversation 1. Anie : What time do you have breakfast, Ben? (jam berapa kamu sarapan, Ben?) Ben : I usually have a breakfast at 7 oclock every morning. (saya biasanya sarapan jam 7 setiap pagi.) Anie : Do you have breakfast at home? (apakah kamu sarapan di rumah?) Ben : Sometimes. But I often have breakfast at a coffee shop. (kadang kadang,tapi saya sering sarapan di caf.)

: Why? (kenapa?)

Ben

: Because I am too lazy to cook. (karena saya malas untuk memasak.)

Anie

: Okay, never mind. (okey, tidak apa- apa)

Conversation 2. Afel : Do you always eat fruit for lunch? (apakah kamu selalu makan buah untuk makan siang?) May : Yes, I like to eat a banana or an orange.What about you? (iya, saya suka makan pisang atau jeruk. Bagaimana dengan kamu?) Afel : I usually bring sandwich. (saya biasanya membawa sandwich.) May : When do you make your sandwich? (kapan kamu membuat sandwich?) Afel : Hm.My mother does, actually. (hm..ibu yang mengenjakanya.) May : OMG.I see. Does she use whole wheat bread? (ya tuhan..saya tau,apakah dy menggunakan roti gandum semuanya? ) Afel : Yes. How did you know? (ya, bagaimana kamu tau?) May : Just guessing.hehehe. Yeah, because you like the wheat bread very much (hanya menebak.hehehe,ya karena kamu suka sekali roti gandum.)
