With our five years of experience of alkalising both personally and as a business that has helped over twelve thousand individuals to become alkaline we have learned a great deal about how to make this lifestyle as easy to follow as possible. We have personally been through the cleanse process many, many times and have learned all of the lessons and techniques to make it as easy and as achievable as it can possibly be.

This guidebook will take you through the cleanse process, step-by-step, to give you the greatest possible chance of success. It has been written specifically to give you the core information so that you can get started straight away and start seeing results!

What to expect:

After these ten days you will be feeling like you have a new lease of life. You will feel strong, motivated and more dynamic. We have tried and tested this over and over with clients (and ourselves), and can assure you that these are results you may expect:

Weight loss (or gain if underweight), increased energy, clear, soft and supple skin, improved athletic performance, less sleep needed, increased libido, a more positive and motivated mental state, increased flexibility and recovery from joint pains and injury, heightened immune system, shinier hair, disappearance of skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis etc and much more. You should begin to notice changes in weight and energy within days and the others should follow as you spend more time living by these simple principles. Excited? Then lets get started!

Basically the advice your mother taught you all those years ago! The concepts behind following an alkaline diet are very simple: eat the things you know are good for you (fresh, leafy green vegetables and salads etc.) and steer clear of the things you know are bad (sugar, bad fats, alcohol, tobacco, yeast etc.). Of course, the science and research behind this approach is slightly more detailed than this - but following this simple rule is the basis of an extremely effective and beneficial lifestyle - eat more fresh vegetables and cut out the junk food!

How do I become alkaline?

By following an alkaline cleanse we can ensure that our body receives the nourishment, nutrients and fuel it needs to remove acid toxins and wastes, maintain optimal health and send your energy levels through the roof!

The key is to maximise the amount of fresh, alkalising fruits and vegetables that you consume, along with plenty of pure, alkaline water, smoothies and juices.

This effect is based upon the ash residue that remains after our foods are consumed. Some foods leave an acid ash, whereas others leave an alkaline ash. This is determined by the mineral and nutrient make up of the food and the sugars it contains. Conveniently for us, our bodies have been designed to categorise which foods leave which kind of ash into neat and easy to remember groups (refer to the Acid and Alkaline Food Chart in your weekly email and links for more detail). Of course, everybody is different - but after following this cleanse, most of us should aim to eat 75-80% alkaline foods and a maximum of 20-25% acid forming foods.

This is not as difficult or as technical as it sounds. When we talk about eating alkaline foods or starting an alkaline diet we are referring to consuming those foods and drink which have an alkaline effect on the body.

Makes Us Fat! The body creates fat cells in order to protect our organs from excess acids. The fat is designed to carry these acid wastes away to other, less critical areas of the body and it clings to these organs to provide protection. Once the body is rid of acid wastes (through a healthier diet and exercise) it no longer needs to hang onto these fats for protection and it lets them go. Alongside this - weight problems are also compounded by the result of yeast and fungus overgrowths wreaking havoc on our digestive systems. And guess what - yeast and fungus thrive in an acidic environment. Because your body is now not able to properly process foods and extract the full nutrition from the foods that you eat - your body is always telling you that you are hungry. To compound this problem, the yeasts and fungus have the greatest shout in this signal to the brain - and what do they make you hungry for - more sugar, which further fuels the yeast growth. Steals Energy! Principally, over-acidity will cause our body to leach alkaline minerals from our bones, muscles and other tissues to ensure that the blood maintains its delicate alkaline balance. This removal of alkaline minerals (particularly calcium and magnesium) inhibits efficient and effective cellular and body metabolism - making us sluggish, tired and cloudy. Put most simply - over acidification drains our bodies of energy and inhibits the bodys ability to use stored energy reserves.

Causes Allergies: The mycotoxins that thrive in an acidic environment severly stress the immune system leading to it being constantly overworked and stimulated into response mode. The result of this is absurdly heightened sensitivity to nutrition and chemicals is what is more commonly known as an allergy. Excess mucus, soreness, swelling, eczema etc are all ways for the body to eliminate toxins. Causes Free-Radical Damage and Premature Aging: Acidosis is a symptom of - and a cause of - oxidative stress and lipid breakdown. The effect of this is that free radical damage is then promoted, attacking cell walls and membranes before killing the cells themselves. The outcome of this? Wrinkles, age spots, dysfunctional hormonal systems, poor eyesight, bad memory and foggy thinking - at the very least. Healthy cells are essential to almost every body process - so premature aging could become the least of your concerns!

Causes Excess Mucus: Mucus is normal. It is just another mechanism by which the body eliminates toxins - it coats everything we ingest and engulfs the toxins. When toxins are engulfed the mucus becomes sticky, thick and cloudy in order to trap the toxins in. Acidic foods and drinks always contain toxins which cause so much mucus that we seem to be constantly blowing our noses! The worst offenders are dairy products, animal protein, white flour and pastas, chocolate, coffee and alcohol.

Corrodes and Destroys Veins, Arteries and Heart Tissues: Acid is corrosive - and overly acidic blood and bodily fluids almost immediately begins to erode and destroy cell walls of the heart, veins and arteries - leading to a much weakened cardiovascular system.

Causes Bad Cholesterol Problems: When we create an acidic environment in our bodies - the body creates LDL-Cholesterol at an accelerated rate. This LDL Cholesterol then causes huge amounts of clogging and cardiovascular problems.

Increases Blood Pressure: With the acid problems above, including increased LDL Cholesterol and compromised cell health - the heart has to work increasingly harder to move blood around the body. Acidosis is also to blame for venous vasoconstriction (meaning a decrease in diameter of the blood vessels) - which further adds to the workload of the heart and raises blood pressure! ...and finally: A system that is riddled with excess acids and their wastes is compromised in so many ways - including hundreds of ways that are not even mentioned above! But even from this short list it is possible to see how acidosis could lead to: cardiovascular disease (high blood pressure, heart attacks, arteriosclerosis, stroke, high cholesterol etc), diabetes & obesity, liver & kidney disease, cancer - in any form, neurological diseases, immune system deficiencies, premature aging, hormonal problems & imbalances, osteoporosis and many more!

Cleansing simply involves giving your body an abundance of easily absorbed nutrients, while cutting out the crap. The aim is to provide your body with all of the tools it needs to rebuild, replenish and detoxify, in a way that requires as little work for your body to do its job. Cleansing is very simple. When you follow a plan, do it right and keep focused it is also very, very easy. I know that right now it might feel a bit daunting, but let me put your mind at ease!

You will basically be giving your body a massive nutrient hit several times per day...in liquid form. This means soups, smoothies and juices. But dont be afraid, you wont be missing out. You will still be getting hot, cold, sometimes thick, creamy, chunky and sometimes cool and refreshing. Always delicious. You can eat as much as you like, you will never be hungry (actually, you are not allowed to feel hungry!).

The outcome for your body is that it can instantly start to cleanse and detoxify, rebuild and replenish and generate new, healthy, perfect cells. The outcome for you is that you will feel vibrant, energetic and alive. Your mind will feel focused and you will have sharpness to your thinking. You will feel confident and positive. The mental fog will be lifted and if your body needs it, you may also experience the following: increased energy improved digestion no more aches, pains or allergies soft & clear skin a lean, fit and vibrant body less cravings for sugar, salt and fatty foods less body fat soft, strong hair a strong immune system better moods a higher libido no more afternoon energy dips waking up naturally fresh and to slow down the aging process?

Im guessing that youve either thought about, researched, tried or heard of a few different detox, cleanse or fasting techniques in the past. If you look at a few detox diet pages on the internet then you will find a huge variety of opinions and methods.

I see these as two VERY different concepts, and from searching around on the Internet and in magazines, the randomness of the advice given and the calls in some publications for fasting has left me a little concerned. The Difference Between Cleansing & Fasting Having scoured the web, I struggled to find a neat, single, accepted definition of either cleansing or fasting and both cross over into definitions of detoxing. Wikipedia defines fasting as:

This worries me. Not because I dont think people should detox, but because some of the advice being dished out is pretty disturbing. And mostly because there seems to be absolutely no real definition of what a detox actually involves, and more worryingly, the terms FAST and CLEANSE are used almost interchangably.

And from the sites I have researched, there is a varying length of time for fasting, ranging from 3-100 days.

Fasting is the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food and in some cases drink, for a period of time.

Some insist on consuming nothing at all, others suggest only water while (most famously) some suggest the lemonade fast (such as the Master Cleanse). In essence, they all emphasise that by ingesting almost nothing, the body will be forced to remove whatever it can from the blood, liver, kidneys, lymph and digestive tract.

Cleansing, to me, has nothing to do with the above.


In fact, to cleanse the body I believe that we need to give the body MORE nutrients, minerals and energy foods in order to help it to heal and detoxify itself. As mentioned above, this means a whole load of water, fresh vegetable juices, smoothies and fresh tasty soups.

So whereas fasting is based upon giving the body nothing so that the toxins are forced out, cleansing is based upon feeding the body with the tools to cleanse itself. Dr Young has provided two of the most powerful metaphors for this process - he describes it as a liquid feast and an internal shower.

So whereas both approaches agree that you should absolutely remove all of the crap from your diet - the key difference is what you put in.

We need to give it plenty of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to repair itself, cleanse the blood and flush the crap out and perhaps most importantly we need to give it fibre to brush the digestive system clean. I mean, why would you want to starve your body of nutrients during such a vital time? Is it just me or does this not make a lot more sense?

It simply makes more sense to me that if we want our body to heal itself and rid itself of toxins we need to give it the tools to do so.

The types of ingredients you will become very familiar with over the next 10 days include: Spinach Avocado Lettuce Broccoli Celery Cucumber Ginger Garlic Lemon Lime Parsley Kale Tomato & more!

This might sound like you are starving yourself, but in reality the opposite is true. You consume a LOT of nutrients, a LOT of calories and a LOT of food! You dont go hungry. If you feel hungry, you have some more.

Put most simply, an alkaline cleanse involves consuming raw, fresh, alkaline soups, juices and smoothies for a period of between 3 and 10 days (and beyond for some!).

You also consume a lot of water during the cleanse. Good quality, clean, pure water. I also like to have herbal teas, ginger tea especially, alongside warm water with lemon squeezed in. I dont need to go into too much detail about what to avoid, as it is literally everything else! You have your acid/alkaline food chart to refer to, but if you stick to the recipes & menus in this course then you will be thriving and feeling great. What Should We Avoid?

From these ingredients, you will be making an abundance of soups, smoothies and juices, all with different textures, tastes and temperatures!

If you are consuming only fresh, cleansing, alkaline soups, juices and smoothies then you dont really need to know a full and exhaustive list of things you will be avoiding!

Alkaline Soups
Soups are about to become your best friend! They will give you warmth, a filling satisfaction, texture, flavour, variety and lots and lots of goodness. Alkaline soups are quick and easy to prepare, usually only taking 10-12 minutes from start-to-finish, meaning that they make the perfect emergency snack as well as a full and filling meal.

It is important to remember that these soups can be enjoyed chilled or warmed, as smooth or chunky as you like, and that you can feel free to play with herbs and spices to mix things up. These soups are all made in the blender, and usually include a mixture of vegetables, leaves, avocados, herbs, spices and stock.

One of my favourite raw, alkaline soups (to give you an idea) is made by blending lightly steamed broccoli, cucumber, avocado, spinach, vegetable stock and fresh ginger. The warmth of the steamed broccoli and stock makes it comforting, while the smoothness of the avocado makes it really satisfying and filling (and no, you cant taste the avocado if that worries you!). The broccoli also gives it a slightly chunky crunchiness and the ginger finishes it off with a lovely zing. You can eat as much soup as you want to or need to. Remember, never go hungry! If you start to feel a hunger pang, just mix up a little more soup and away you go. Simple as that.

By juice, I mean vegetable juice. Unfortunately fruit juice is totally out of the equation when it comes to alkalising. Juiced fruits, even when fresh, are highly acidic due to the concentration of sugars. ALL sugar is massively acidic, fermenting in the body and fuelling the production of yeasts and candida. Consuming sugar is like throwing petrol on a fire and is the single most important thing to eliminate from your diet as much as possible. So to that end, fruit juice is out.

Green vegetable juices are highly alkalising, hydrating, nourishing and contain huge levels of chlorophyll, enzymes, phytonutrients, vitamins and alkaline minerals. Sound good? There are a few simple rules to follow when it comes to juicing:

Imagine the energy burst you will get from your body receiving that much goodness in one hit! And because it doesnt contain the fibre the body is able to absorb and use it straight away without any energy being used up to digest it!

Think of vegetable juices this way juice for one person will likely contain a few huge handfuls of spinach, a salads-worth of lettuce, a whole cucumber, a few sticks of celery, sprouts and an assortment of other greens. Think of all of the nutrients in there and think about how often you would actually eat that much green food in one sitting, in the two minutes it takes to drink it?

But vegetable juice is in! That might not sound like much of a compromise now as your taste buds are probably not accustomed to the subtle flavours of vegetables yet, but in time you will become hooked!

Always make the juice yourself, at home shop bought juices are almost always pasteurised, homogenised or heated to kill the bacteria and make the shelf life longer. Unfortunately this kills the goodness too. Consume the juice asap as soon as the vegetables have been juiced the enzymes begin to die. Dont leave your juice more than ten minutes. For extra goodness, add lemon juice, pH drops and/or green powder

Similar to the alkaline soup, the alkaline smoothies are made by simply mixing a whole heap of vegetables, leaves, herbs and spices in a blender.

But remember, these are not the normal smoothies you might be thinking of. Gone is the acidic, clogging milk, yoghurt and ice cream and in comes the veggies! The best thing about these smoothies is that you can literally throw anything in! This means that you can always change the flavour, make it smoother, sweeter, chunkier, thinner - whatever you feel like whenever you fancy.

Smooth and filling, these smoothies are an unbelievable way to start your day. You get a massive hit of nutrients, fibre, vegetables and hydration - these are all high water content vegetables!

The basic ingredients include cucumber (for the high water content), avocado (for smoothness & creaminess), spinach (for high chlorophyll content) and herbs (for variety and flavour). From this base you can add capsicum/peppers for sweetness and bite, tomatoes for that soft juiciness, softened cauliflower for a subtle creaminess, kale (for bite) or anything else! And while these ingredients might sound unfamiliar in a smoothie context, but you will soon start to crave these drinks and get a real feel for the ingredients you want to use at different times of the day.

We all know we should be drinking plenty of water each and every day, and although many of us fail to reach our recommended daily target, we generally understand the massively important role it plays in our everyday health and wellbeing. But why? And perhaps more importantly - if we are going to be consuming so much water, shouldnt we make sure it is the best quality? Water is widely accepted as one of the most important considerations when creating a healthy lifestyle. Water comprises between 50-70% of an adults body (up to 90lbs in a 130lb adult!) - and when water is taken out of our diet our survival time is 2-3 days at best so we have to make sure we are always well hydrated. According to mayoclinic.com, at the very least dehydration can cause: - Fatigue - Excessive thirst - Headache

Proper hydration is so important to every function of the human body (if fluids drop by just 15% we die) and dehydration is at the root cause of such a ridiculous number of symptoms. From thirst to depression to cancer to obesity to fatigue to bulimia to digestive problems to skin problems and so on. This is not to say that dehydration is the only cause, but the above is just a small selection of the symptoms of repeated, daily dehydration.

At the very least, a 5% drop in body fluids will cause a 25-30% loss of energy in most people! In fact, even mild dehydration can slow our metabolism down by 3% - when you consider this, you can see why rehydration can support weight loss!

- Dry mouth

So water is important, but what about the quality of water?
The average suggestion of water consumption per day ranges from 2.5 litres to 4 litres so it is imperative that we ensure that this water is of the highest quality. There is a lot of discussion about the merits of alkaline water (particularly in the open publishing medium known as the Internet) - however, regardless of who you listen to regarding this debate there is one thing that is certain:

For those who are not so sceptical about the benefits of the alkaline lifestyle, alkaline water helps to neutralise acids and remove toxins from the body - it is a great cleanser and helps to detoxify our system.

How Do We Make Alkaline Water?

There are three main methods to make alkaline water:

In order to hydrate your body optimally, you need to drink water that is alkaline and mineral rich. Alkaline water helps to neutralise acids and remove toxins from the body. Alkaline water also acts as a conductor of electrochemical activity from cell to cell. Ideally, water should have a ph between 9 and 10, and you should be drinking 3-4 litres of it daily. As you hydrate your body properly, youll develop more of a thirst for water.

Food cravings are often the bodys cry for water. You might already have more of a thirst than you even realise - and if you are going to quench it, make sure your water is alkaline!

To use the greens you simply mix one scoop (or teaspoon) into a litre of water, add pH drops and away you go. I personally consume up to 5 litres per day depending on what I am doing, how I feel and what exercise I have done and it sends my energy levels through the roof. The difference between the days when I do use greens and the days (that for whatever reason) I dont is abundantly clear to me. If you are serious about alkalising then get serious about greens! As with juicing there are a couple of simple rules to follow here too:

These greens are highly concentrated mixes of the most alkaline foods on earth and are incredibly effective at alkalising the body. They provide many of the nutrients that are essential to our health and effectively assist in the elimination of acidic toxins and fungus.

A key part of cleansing is the consumption of green drinks, which is the mix of powdered green foods (grasses, vegetables, grains and alkalising fruits) into water with pH drops. These green drinks should be consumed up to 4 times per day in 1 litre of alkaline water.

Aim for a mixture of greens from different grasses and vegetables Consume with room temperature water, not too cold as this effects absorption Be sure to check the ingredients list for sweeteners, carob and other sugars (including dried high-sugar fruits) Aim for organic where possible

Exercising aerobically helps to flush your body of toxins through your sweat, breath and lymph (rebounding is especially good for pumping your lymph around your body!). While cleansing it is a great idea to keep active, but try to make sure it is aerobic and not anaerobic (resistance) training. It is not a good idea to over-exert yourself. Walking, light jogging or even better rebounding is excellent.

Stick to exercise that, intuitively, you know will help with this!

Remember - our aim is to make it as easy as possible for the body to heal itself.

Anything too strenuous such as resistance training can cause dizziness and weakness, and some anaerobic exercise, while good for you, can lead to the temporary production of acids, which is exactly what you are trying to avoid during the cleanse.

A Little About Rebounding...

As quoted by NASA, exercise on a rebounder is the most efficient and effective exercise yet devised by man. It is an excellent, non-impact, aerobic exercise gained by bouncing on a mini-trampoline.

Rebounding might be a new concept to you, so here is my super-fast introduction!

On studying the benefits of rebounding, NASA found that a 150-pound individual spending one-hour on a rebounder will burn more calories than the same person jogging for an hour! All you need is a rebounder (mini-trampoline) and youre away! Simply start bouncing, jogging, hopping, stepping and walking on it! 15-minutes per day will have you feeling absolutely fantastic.

It is a unique exercise in which a weightless state is achieved at the top of each jump and landing achieves twice the force of gravity on each bounce. This shift in gravity benefits every muscle and cell of the body and provides huge benefits to the lymph system.

The benefits of exercising on a mini trampoline are astonishing and have been promoted significantly within the last decade.

Having personally been through a lot of alkaline cleanses in my time, and having coached and supported a number of others I have pretty much been through every cleanse experience there is! Here is a rundown of what you might expect:

Things to Be Aware Of:

Skin Breakouts: your skin is your largest organ and one of the five ways your body can expel toxins is through your skin. This means temporary rashes or acne. Dont worry, it will go away again re ally quickly.

Detox Flu: some people may experience detox symptoms that are similar to that of having a common cold including excess mucus. Keep your fluids up and have plenty of nice, warm, soothing soup! Herbal teas are also great for this, particularly ginger.

See over for the positive things to look out for!

A lot of people never experience anything negative and start feeling fantastic straight away, so dont be too concerned!

When these negative symptoms arise, you just have to remember that they are only temporary. Make sure you have always got more food or drink to consume, drink plenty of water and go easy on yourself. This is why it is often best to start on a Friday, so if the first few days are tough you have home comforts and can give yourself a rest.

Headaches: you may also experience headaches in the first couple of days as your body gets used to not having sugar, caffeine, alcohol etc.

Things to Enjoy!
Energy Bursts: every now and then, over the first couple of days you will have sudden bursts of natural energy! As you progress you will start feeling this energy more and more until this just becomes your normal energy level!

Increased Mood: when you start to get rid of acids and the harmful wastes they leave behind (yeasts, bacteria, fungus etc) you will find your outlook becoming more positive and future-focused. Increased Mental Clarity: you will also find that the mental fog lifts, giving you in creased clarity and sharper thinking.

Fat Loss: even though you will be eating lots, you will not be consuming any saturated fats, trans fats, dairy, sweets, sugar (in other words, no acid). Instead you will be con suming all of the foods your body needs to repair itself and throw off the unwanted weight you have. Or if you are underweight, you will find that as you start to become alkaline, your body will put on as much weight as it needs to find your natural weight.

However, it is really easy to get carried away, overdo it and be tempted to buy every supplement under the sun - when what you really need is to focus on the core essentials.

Just like a car needs oil to function, your body also needs oil on a daily basis. Essential fatty acids form the membrane of our red blood cells and galvanise them. These healthy oils also deliver nutrients to our tissues and other cells, remove toxins, assist in bowel elimination, support skin function, and massively boost white blood cell function.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)

They are called essential because the body simply cannot create them on its own, it relies upon us to ingest them. They are absolutely vital and rank alongside green drinks in terms of importance to our bodys health. There is no getting away from it, for the duration of the cleanse food will be the centre of your day! This does not mean that you cannot live your normal life and achieve all of the other things you want to - but you will have to stay focused and directed on the cleanse. 7am: Waking Up Drink 1 litre of water with green powder and pH drops. Take one third of all omega oils, vitamins and minerals and any other supplements 7am - 8am: Breakfast Make large alkaline smoothie Here is what a typical day will look like:

8am: Morning Exercise Undertake aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging or exercise on a rebounder
