Opening Ceremonies : What a blast we had!

What a way to start the 2014 NL Winter Games in Clarenville. We were joined with our emcee Snook, Premier Tom Marshall, MHA Ross Wiseman, our mayor Frazer Russell Games Chair Greg Pittman, Patrons of the Games, June and Corwin Mills, the Games host committee, and many others! Nine regions Central, Avalon, Mount Pearl South, Eastern, Labrador, Western, St.John's North and our host team, Clarenville. St. Pierre et Miquelon will join us for the second half. In total, about 1500 athletes, coaches, and officials over the week and more than 500 volunteers will be involved. The Clarenville 2014 Games Committee has been planning this event for 2.5 years. Grace Rose and Kaitlyn Butt read the athletes oath while Trevor Coates delivering the coaches oath. Two of our torch bearers Mr. Bert Roberts and Zach Ennis were the first to bring out the torch during the opening ceremonies. We also had a wonderful performance from former Clarenville High School band Saving Her Serenity, CHS boys quartet, and the Applied Music 3206 students directed by Ann Lundrigan. Its an honour to host the Winter Games here in Clarenville for the second time since 1994! We hope the visiting regions participating enjoy their stay, create new memories, make new friends, and have an unforgettable experience! Allison Janes

The Athletes are Here!

Saturday afternoon brought the arrival of all the athletes in the first half of the games. Their arrival brought along much excitement as some said that they were ready to win and bring the medals back home. Upon arrival, they went to their rooms, unpacked and hit up the common room. All the rooms filled up as quickly as they could with each passing arrival. When asked what they were excited for many said ``meeting new people while others said that they`d just settle for the amazing food. The athletes that are here for the first half of the games will be representing the sports of Female hockey, wrestling, basketball, bowling, and cross country skiing. The excitement these athletes shared in last nights opening ceremonies, shows everyone is clearly excited. So, with hopes soaring high let`s hope the games will be as thrilling as the arrivals were. Who's Who in the Sea of Colour!

Athletes of the different regions have been color coded. The host teams wear white. Bright blue is the western teams. Green comes from Labrador. The cream colored shirts mark the athletes from the eastern region, the grey-blue are from Mt. Pearl. The light grey are from the Avalon. Finally, the athletes wearing the burgundy shirts come from central NL. Before the Opening Ceremonies a Pep Rally was held for all athletes. The pep rally was great. When each region took to the stage, they all represented themselves well. They've clearly all brought their energy, camaraderie, and best dance moves with them to the Winter Games.
