To become a director it is required to have artistic vision and creative skills to develop an engaging and original film. What is essential which some of the best directors have is a commitment and a deep passion for filmmaking. He or she must act as a strong and confident leader and must constantly make decisions that will make the movie a blockbuster or a forgettable film. Artistic vision, good colour vision. Creativity and precise attention to detail. Ability to give and to accept direction. Good communication skills. Knowledge of the requirements of the relevant Health and Safety legislation and procedures.

Director

A film director is a person who directs the making of a film. Generally, a film director controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects, and visualizes the script while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfilment of the scene.

What activities that job would require you to undertake. I would be working close with the producer and the screenwriters to determine the best way to visually present the ideas being developed. When the film is in motion I will working with the actors with input on their performance and the way I want the scene done. One of the most important thing I will need to do is to light the set exactly how the director vision for the scene. I will also need to make sure that the position of actors and the set within the frame of the camera. Also I will be making decisions where to put the camera and where to move it over the course of the scene. I would have the story and transfer it on a script by working with the script writer. I would be making sure that the production is on track, and have to see them before they come even worse. I would be making sure the director is making the film the way I want it to look otherwise it would miss the point.

Director of photography

Producer

Directors of Photography are key Heads of Department on film productions, and theirs is one of the major creative roles. They are requested by the Director, and must be approved by the financiers, studio. They work closely with the Director and Production Designer to give a film its visual signature A Producer is someone who comes up with a project and oversees it from the set through completion. Some producers answer to themselves. Other is employee-producers, working for an employer such as a film studio or an independent production company.

They need an extensive knowledge of cinematic narrative and a thorough understanding of all the creative processes of filmmaking as they are in ultimate control of the overall planning of the production including sales and distribution.

Music composer

Screen writer

Composers write music that is appropriate for each film, and consistent with the Director's vision. Ideally working in creative collaboration with Directors, Composers write scores that guide the audience through the drama, increase films' emotional impact, and give them atmosphere Screenwriters are responsible for researching the story, developing the narrative, writing the screenplay, and delivering it, in the required format, to Development Executives. Screenwriters therefore have great influence over the creative direction and emotional impact of the screenplay and, arguably, of the finished film

They must be able to improvise, and to create themes quickly under the pressure of deadlines. They need to be able to work collaboratively, and to be flexible and willing to compromise. The ability to listen to Directors, and to translate their vision into musical terms, is crucial Screenwriters must have an in-depth understanding of story, plot and narrative, and must also demonstrate the creative imagination required to put their vision on to the page, and to create characters and the lifechoices they make.

I would have to create and write a song for the production, and put it in motion. I would also be working close with the director and musicians to make this piece. I would need good recording an d music software skills, and must be able to orchestrate music.

I must be able to write a screenplay in which the reader can see the film unfold cinematically in their imagination. The screen play must have the characters described in detail. Screenwriters must produce highly creative script, to strict deadlines.

Director

Outline of Condition of Employment


Contracts: the director would have to sign a contract which makes sure he is doing his job from pre-production to post production. A separate Development Contract is recommended for certain situations, with a fee and a clear end date. In it, the Director must be given the right to direct the film, notice of intended start date, and of the penalty payment in the event of not being chosen to direct. He or she is on a contract per film. Legislation: For a film director they are shown the code of practice, and shown relevant sections of it. Productions are asked to read the code of practice and relevant obligations closely to ensure that they operate within the law.

Legal guidelines: when the director makes decision like what actors, locations and scenes. The director has to get the approval of the producer and executive producer because its to stick with the producer vision and to stay within the budget. However the director can appeal to get a bigger budget if his plans intend to go over it. Ethical Issues: the issues that could affect a director is to be aware what story he chooses like e.g. Argo won so many awards yet it angered New Zealand and Iran. This is because it was during the siege when the America ambassador building what destroyed.

Director of photography

Contracts: The directors of photography often work odd hours. They travel to shooting sites, and may have to work in outdoor locations in bad weather. They are expected to understand precisely what directors want and create footage accordingly. Only well-established production houses offer full time employment. Most of them work on a freelance basis. Legal guidelines: Filming for a production that will appear on television, in theatres or in any digital format for commercial or non-commercial purposes. Filming for a production intended to promote or market any commercial or non-commercial enterprise, such as a marketing video for a particular product or service. Ethical Issues: when they are filming locations and something happens they may have to edit it out from the film. It cant conflict with real life otherwise it will upset the audience. For e.g. when they were filming Spiderman they used the twin towers in one of their scenes, but however because of 9/11 they had to take it out and deleted it.

Producer

Contracts: the independent producers dont have contracts but they have to get investors to sign an agreement. An employee producer would have to sign a contract with a film company; the contract will last until post production. Legislation: the pieces of employment legalisation that could affect are the health and safety act. For example the producer goes out with film crew and is going to a factory for a scene they would have to take extra steps to make sure everything is safe. Legal guidelines: producers have to follow mainly copyright guideline that the main problem that goes on. Generally a film or still is protected by copyright if it is less than 95 years old. If that piece was not registered for copyright or does not have a notice of copyright on it and it is then published. Ethical Issues: The moral principles that define how a person or group acts. The issues that affect a film mainly are Truth, privacy and serving the public interests. E.g. Argo the film stuck and made everything write to show how it really was in the siege and because of this the Irans made many complaints about the film . Compared to a film like fast and furious which was unrealistic so the ethics didnt affect the film.

Questions
1. How are ethical restrictions different from legal restrictions?
Ethical is knowingly risk causing harm to individuals or groups when planning, conducting, documenting, or presenting the vast majority of research. Legal is keeping within the law so people arent causing any harm when doing there production like planning permission, and a contract with an actor.

2. How do the terms outlined in an employment contract affect working conditions?


There is no requirement in UK law to have a contract of employment. Because by turning up for work you form a contract. There is a requirement in law to provide "Terms of Employment" Within the first two months. This can be part of a contract or as a statement of employment. 3. Where does legislation come from and who implements and

upholds it?
The legislation comes from the government buy its companys like ICO is the UKs independent public authority set up to uphold information rights. By promoting and providing information to individuals and organisations and taking appropriate action when the law is broken. 4. Are there any types of contract that allow for greater flexibility

and freedom in a persons working life? If so, what are they and how do they allow this?
Zero hours contracts are arrangements where people agree to be available for work as and when required but no particular number of hours or times of work are specified. This would be the most flexibility in a contract, with no particular hours.
