MAAE3202 Mechanics of Solids II! Mid-Term Assignment ! ! ! ! ! ! ! March 2. 2014 !

Read the following instructions carefully:!

1. Answer all the questions in the space provided and staple this cover page together with the answer sheets for submission. Your submission of the answers for marking is optional. However, marks obtained in this assignment will be added to your Final Examination marks as bonus. The maximum total bonus marks is 15. All questions carry equal marks. You are strongly encouraged to complete this assignment by yourself. If it helps to promote learning from one another, you may work as a group of no more than 3 students. All students in the group must be identified (see Item 7 below) and each must still submit individual answer sheets, albeit with the same answers. All students in a group will receive the same marks. Students are reminded of the academic integrity standards as stated in the University Calendar. Those found in violation of these standards will be penalised accordingly. The deadline for the assignment is: 10am, March 3. 2014 SHARP. It is to be submitted into the drop box located near the general office of the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (between rooms ME3135 and ME3144). Please mark an X in one of the boxes below, and write your name(s) and student number(s) in the appropriate column. Please initial beside your name.

! Question 1! ! !

Mid-Term Assignment

A cantilever beam is 2 m long and is loaded with a vertical load P at the free end. The beam has a uniform thin-walled cross-section in the shape of a circular arc of constant thickness of 4mm. The shear modulus of the material is 90GPa.! a) Derive an equation for the distance e from the centre of the arc to the shear centre S as a function of angle ! and radius r.! b) If !="/2 the angle of twist of the member must not exceed 6, what is the maximal permissible load P that can be applied.! c) With !="/2, determine the maximum shear stress due to the twist of the section?! d) Indicate in Figure 1. where the maximum shear stress due to bending of the beam occurs.!

! Note: Calculations should be based on the centreline dimensions.! ! !

Unifonn MAAE3202 Mechanics of Solids II ! bars, each of length L

2.5 mMid-Term and with the cross-section shown Assignment used to carry a load undergoing a chemical process in a high temperature Question 2! The bars are made of a refractory ceramic which has relatively low tensile MPa at the operating temperature. Each bar may be considered as a beam A beam with a cross-section shown in Figure 2 is simply supported its ends distributed and is at its ends and carrying a at unifonnly load, w k simply supported carrying a uniformly distributed load, w kN/m . The beam with a length of L=2.5 m is properties of its cross-section are as follows: used in a high temperature environment and is made of a ceramic material which has a low tensile strength of 60MPa.
