10. Features of Graduate School Since its foundation, Yokohama National University (YNU) has been committed to the spirit of solving actual, real-world problems by putting theory into practice, encouraging new endeavors, widely opening its doors to society, and fostering exchange with other nations. The Department of Systems integration, the Graduate School of Engineering, cultivates students who can construct advanced complex systems from small components by synthesizing science-based elemental technology, design technology that makes use of that elemental technology, and production technology that harmonizes with society and environment. Students belonging to the specialization in ocean and space engineering can acquire fundamentals of fluid, structure, and motion mechanics, design and control theories for ships, airplane and satellite, and innovative technology for ocean space utilization based on naval architecture and ocean engineering and aerospace engineering. This specialization provides students with opportunities of taking part in overseas internships and of attending special lectures by specialists invited from worldwide countries in order to foster students who can conduct pronounced activities across national boundaries. Programs offered at the Department of Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering cover a wide range of engineering areas, from basic to practical application, by integrating electric, electronic, communication and computer engineerings, phenomena analysis, simulation, and physical engineering that supports the previous disciplines. The aim is to train students to become creative engineers and system managers with practical skills in the electric, electronic, information and material fields. 11. Features and Curriculum of Program (1) Specialization in Ocean and Space Engineering, Department of Systems Integration The specialization in ocean and space engineering offers several lectures on naval architecture and ocean engineering, and aerospace engineering, examples of which are listed below: Design Theory of Ships and Ocean Marine Hydrodynamics Optimal Trajectories in Ocean-space Structures Exercises in Computational Exercises in Computational Structural Gasdynamics for Aerospace Propulsion Hydrodynamics Dynamics Basic Theory of Dynamic Motion of Intelligent Materials and Systems Ocean Energy Utilization Ocean Structures Ship Motions in Waves Space Systems Utilization Engineering Advanced Study on Ocean Industry

Graduates in our specialization have to get credits by taking some of the above classes and by participating laboratory

12. Internship program There are two kinds of the curriculum in the specialization in ocean and space engineering: Pi-type Engineering Degree (PED), and T-type Engineering Degree (TED). Our specialization can provides all students belonging to the two curriculums with internships at a variety of companies such as shipyard, research and development organizations for ocean and space engineering, and overseas universities. In particular, students of the PED are able to be given more such opportunities. Our major is closely connected to manufacturers of large scale structure such as ships, offshore structure and airplane; we can offer a plenty of choices for a student where to go. In addition, we can invite students to join tours visiting ships under construction or repair, and research institutes including large test tank. 13. Academic schedule Our graduate school opens lectures during two semesters a year: spring semester from April to July, and autumn semester from October to February. Enrollment ceremonies are held at the beginning of April and October for students enrolling in April and October, respectively. Final examinations for getting credits are set at the end of July and middle of February. Little classes are given in August, September and March, and students is thus able to have vacations for these months,

92.Yokohama National Univ.(Engineering).docx during which they are able to go out for activities outside campus such as internships or trips. We can receive graduate students twice a year: April and October. If you belong to YNU as a research student, you will be recommended to take an entrance examination for being a normal graduate student as soon as possible. The entrance examinations are conducted twice a year: mid-August and latter-January. 14. Facilities and Cultural activities for International students (1) Student Dormitory YNU has three dormitories for international students: Ooka International Residence, Foreign Student House and Minesawa International Student Dormitory. The Ooka International Residence (constructed 2010) has 252 single rooms. International students can reside here for up to two years, which is renewable until the end of the standard period required for graduation or course completion. Foreign Student House (constructed 1981) has 128 single rooms, 10 units for couples, and 10 units for couples with children. The maximum residence period is one year. Minesawa International Student Dormitory (constructed 1992) has 110 single rooms (80 rooms for men and 30 rooms for women) and a maximum residence period is one year. For details, please refer to following website http://www.ynu.ac.jp/english/campus/institution/index.html New student dormitory will be opened in April 2014 within walking distance of campus. For more information, please refer to YNU website in detail http://www.ynu.ac.jp/english/index.html (2) Japanese Language Program International Student Centers in our university provides a large variety of Japanese language classes depending on the level of each nonnative student. The classes are divided into six levels from beginning to advanced, with classes as well as classes structured around different functions and goals, such as conversation, listening, comprehension, oral presentation, English-Japanese translation, or advanced grammar. Generally, thirty classes are offered each week, and are open to all international students. For detail please refer to ISC website. http://www.isc.ynu.ac.jp/english/index.html (3) International Student Orientation Every year, an orientation is held at the beginning of the semester in April and October for new international students. Various matters are explained at orientation, such as those that concern international students for their everyday livings (safety, health examinations, insurance, dorm living, application for part-time work permission, events for international students, and more), those related to Japanese-language education, and precautions when completing official procedures for international students.

(4) Tutor Program A Japanese student (or a senior international student) will help the international student as a tutor, as necessary. Not only can

92.Yokohama National Univ.(Engineering).docx the tutor help the international student with studies in the Japanese language and specialized subjects, he or she can offer consultation on aspects of everyday living. (5) Home-stay Information The International Student Center conducts overnight (two days, one night) home-stay programs. They are scheduled for June and November every year. If you would like to participate in a home-stay program in a distant area, there are long-term home-stay programs held during summer vacation or other holidays in the Hokkaido and Kyushu regions as well as Kanazawa City. (6) Exchange Gathering with Japanese Students and International Students from Other Countries There are currently 934 international students from 65 countries and regions enrolled at YNU. The ratio of international students to Japanese students is one of the highest in Japan. This can be ascribed to an ideal environment for international students to friendly exchange with each other and with Japanese students. YNU supports friendly exchanges among international students and Japanese students through various programs, such as study tours, culture experience programs, and friendly exchange gatherings. (7) International Student Center The International Student Center (ISC) aims to teach Japanese language and culture to international students at Yokohama National University as well as offer a place where Japanese and international students can interact. To achieve these ends, the ISC primarily provides the following: 1) Education in Japanese language and culture 2) Coordination of the Junior Year Overseas at YNU (JOY) Program 3) Liberal arts education for international and Japanese students 4) Counseling for international students concerning life and study in Japan http://www.isc.ynu.ac.jp/english/index.html (8) Short stay and short visit program We can invite students to take part in short stay and short visit programs for three months and two weeks, respectively, in which participants stay at an overseas university to take special lectures made by foreign professors, and to make a presentation of your own study and discuss it among a lot of persons, through which you can progress your study and improve your communication skill.
