EVENT DESCRIPTION

In 1997, members of U.P. Circuit envisioned an event that will help bring together students in the field of Electrical, Electronics and Communications, and Computer Engineering from different colleges and universities within Metro Manila in the spirit of a friendly competition. One of the best ways they saw to achieve this was through a quiz show that will inspire academic excellence one of the founding principles of the organization. Thus, in 1998, the first SquEEEze competition was held. In its 16th year, SquEEEze is still the annual flagship project of U.P. Circuit. It convenes the best students of participating colleges and universities in a quiz show where their knowledge in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) topics such as Circuit Analysis, Electromagnetics, Electronics, Digital Design, Computer Architecture, Communications, Power Systems, and Electric Machines is tested. Teams of three students from each school will have to hurdle a written exam elimination and a sudden death round from which ten teams will vie for the championship in the oral final round. As a result of the success of the previous events, U.P. Circuit takes SquEEEze to a higher level by including colleges and universities all over the country.

Only students registered as member or alternate for the team will be allowed to participate. One (1) hour will be provided to finish the given exam. The exam has three parts: easy, average and difficult. And each part is composed of ten (10) questions. Correctly answered questions will be credited based on the difficulty: 2 points for easy, 3 points for average, and 5 points for difficult. No deductions will be given for incorrect or unanswered questions. A seating arrangement will be assigned for each team. Discussion is only allowed within the three members of a team. As the exam time expires, all papers will be collected by the proctors.

4. . Sudden Death Round

4.1 Qualified teams will be divided into two groups. The grouping will be determined by drawing lots from a single bowl. The bowl will contain pieces of paper with numbers `1' and `2'. There will be ten (10) copies of each number in the bowl. Team representatives will be asked to draw one paper. Those teams who got number `1' will compete first. Those teams who got number `2' will be asked to stay in a different room. 4.2 This round is divided into three (3) divisions: Cluster 1, Cluster 2, and Cluster 3. Each team should have a representative for each division. Each division is composed of an easy question worth 2 points, an average question worth 3 points and a difficult question worth 5 points. Each division will concentrate on specific categories. Division Cluster 1 Cluster 2 Cluster 3 Categories Computers, Digital Design Electronics, Communications and Signal Processing Electric Mechanics, Power Systems

Table 1: Divisions for the Sudden Death Round

4.3 The team will decide who among themselves will represent the team for each division. Each team representative will be working individually. In effect, for each division, there will be ten individuals competing with each other. 4.4 Three (3) answer sheets will be provided for each team member. Answers should only be written on these answer sheets. 4.5 Each team representative will be assigned to a station with a buzzer. As the buzzer is pressed, the time it takes for him/her to answer a specific question will be recorded. At the same time, the proctor will get the answer sheet used for that specific question. 4.6 Ten (10) teams with the highest scores from the two batches will advance to the next round. 4.7 In case of a tie, the total time spent by the teams answering all questions, including those that are answered incorrectly, would be compared. The team with the shortest time will advance.

5. Final Round
5.1 This round will consist of three sub-rounds: the Easy Round, the Average Round, and the Difficult Round. Sub-Round Points per Question Number of Questions Easy 2 10 Average 3 10 Difficult 5 10 Table 2: Table of Scores for Each Round Each question will have a specific allotted time. 5.2 The team will work as a group. 5.3 Questions will be taken from the following categories: Category Circuit Theory Electronics Description Passive elements, network analysis, transient analysis Active components, switching circuits, transistor amplifiers, operational amplifiers Electric and magnetic fields, dielectric and magnetic materials, Maxwell's Laws Motors and generators Boolean Algebra, combinational and sequential logic analysis and design, K-maps, state diagrams Computer organization, computer performance metrics, and memory subsystem Generation, transmission, distribution, three-phase systems, real and complex power Communication techniques, domain transforms

These will be used in answering all the questions for this round. 5.2 The question number will be announced by the quizmaster. The question will only be read once. Contestants are only allowed to write or to use the calculator once the quizmaster says Go or Timer starts now. If a contestant is caught writing or using the calculator before the quizmaster says Go or Timer starts now, his/her team will be warned for the first offense, his/her team's answer will be void for the second offense, and his/her team will be disqualified for the third offense. As the time allotted for each question expires, all the teams should raise their board. The answer written in their board will be checked. 5.3 The final score for this round will be the sum of the scores from the easy sub-round, average subround, and difficult sub-round. 5.4 The Champion of SquEEEze 2013 will be the team that has accumulated the most points at the end of the Final Round (scores from the other rounds holds no bearing). The ranking of the teams will also depend on the score they accumulated. 5.5 In case of a tie for the top three spots, this will be settled by a tie-breaker question. After giving the question, the teams will be allowed to continually give answers until one team gets the correct answer and that team will advance.
