Question 31 35 Read the dialogue below and answer the questions that follow. Layla: Desmond: Hey, what are you reading, Desmond? Hi, Layla. Im reading a book about good and bad manners around the world. Ive learnt some really surprising things. Most cultures consider it bad manners to burp out loud. But in Japan burping indicates that you have enjoyed your meal and is considered a compliment to the chef. That is really surprising! In most Middle Eastern countries, its very impolite to display the sole of your feet to another person. Also, they always use their right hand to wave or give things to people. This is because using left hand is considered rude. Isnt that quite similar to the Malay culture? Exactly! This is very interesting. In France and Switzerland, chewing gum in public is considered impolite. While in Singapore, chewing gum is banned after residents got tired of scraping used gum off their seats and sidewalks. I have heard of that. In some cultures in China, guests should not clear their plate completely. Otherwise the host will keep on refilling the plate. Really? That is interesting. In Greece, if you wave goodbye to another person, you have to do so with your palm facing in. This is because any gesture showing your open palm is extremely offensive. There are many more interesting facts in here. Would you like to borrow this book once Ive finished reading it? Yes, Id love to. Thanks a lot.
