Lapada Art & Antiques Fair www.lapada.org BERKELEY SQUARE, MAYFAIR, LONDON The Lapada Art & Antiques Fair Berkeley Square is this Autumn's must-visit event in the UK for sourcing and buying fine art and antiques. Among the exceptional works on offer are furniture, jewellery, carpets, tapestries, antiquities, clocks, ceramics, silver, contemporary and fine art.

EDGE has re-designed the Portico shop on level 2 of the National Gallery, responding to a brief to nd ways to increase turnover from the existing store footprint of 193 sq m. The new concept, developed by EDGE, will see product densities reduced, with a new product mix presented to customers in more comprehensible and dynamic product groupings, set within an overall environment which aspires to be a best-in-class retail offer that engages with and inspires customers, in much the same way as the Gallerys own art collections. The space was replanned rst, with a new

centralised island till freeing up more perimeter space. Fewer oor-xed units were proposed, allowing a better ow of customers through the space and fewer bottlenecks. Along the perimeter, a series of over-sized wall bays with much more layering and depth creates a more dynamic display with a richer visual story. Retail furniture has the feel of artists equipment with postcard units, for example, based on easels, plus display tables with classic trestle table proportions. New mid-oor loose display furniture allows for more compelling displays of objects and artefacts.

These design teams will collaborate with fit-out specialists and product suppliers of their choice to build their concept for Sleep Hotel, which is staged in Londons Business Design Centre annually. This year, the brief is inspired by the widespread interest in, and nostalgia for, the 1960s, and is asking designers to redesign a junior suite in a ctitious hotel originally built during the heyday of Pop Art, translating the radical spirit of this cultural movement into a contemporary experience that is relevant today. PROJECT GALLERY
Interior Design Today presents the Project Gallery, a collection of interior spaces, residential and commercial, that have been designed from scratch or renovated and restored to fantastic effect. This issue, as we head into the autumn season we have a gallery of truly original designs, including The A Bar in Amsterdams InterContinental Amstel. Designed as a standalone bar by RPW Design, The A Bar exudes glamour and sleekness, with an edgy vibe that has been incorporated to bring in a younger clientele. Luxury fixtures give this bar a very sleek finish. HOK impresses yet again with another stage in the BBC renovation complete. This time it is Grafton House, home to the BBCs drama and TV and radio comedy genres. Efficient working environments flow throughout. The Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest have has had a public area redesign by MKV. A theatrical lobby is met with calmness in the hotels bar. Finally, Joanna Higgins reveals her London mews masterpiece that involved a full design reconfiguration and refurbishment of a mews building from flats back into a single house.

MEWS HOUSE MASTERPIECE

Joanna Higgins of Zephyr Interiors Ltd recently completed a London Mews House, in Bayswater. The 1,600 sq ft project spread over four floors including a basement, three bedrooms inc Master, two bathrooms and a cloakroom. A full design reconfiguration and refurbishment of a mews building from flats back into a single house. The property has had an additional top floor and a basement constructed below the existing building. Fully bespoke luxury interior and lighting design from conception to completion. Joanna commented on the project saying, I think what makes this very unique is that being a mews house typically narrow (10ft in this case) we managed to really connect the spaces and give the illusion of space and a larger property, double height bookcase between basement and ground stairs creating one big entertainment space, over scaled elements such as doors, interesting bespoke elements such as metal bronze skirting, use of materials to create space plus great lighting design by John Cullen.

HOK COMPLETES BBC GRAFTON HOUSE

Following the successful completion of BBC New Broadcasting House and the BBC Radio 1 studios, HOKs London office, has completed BBC Grafton House, home to the BBCs Drama and TV and Radio Comedy genres. HOK was tasked with creating an engaging interior space, which would help encourage collaboration across the different teams. The design of the building also needed to bring to life the creative output of the different genres while celebrating the varied personalities of each of the departments. The team designed the building using the theme of a production house. Suspended ceilings were removed throughout to create the feeling of height and openness, while large scale floor to ceiling coloured write-on glass panels wrapped the existing structure on each floor to create dynamic working walls, key to the users working requirements. These provided a strong vertical link throughout the building and helped to support the concept of shared space, an integral feature of the project. In open plan areas, high back sofas were used to create informal one-to-one meeting spaces away from desks, whilst in the basement of the former bank, an old safe was converted into a library space designed for script rehearsals. HOK worked with its team of graphic designers to develop bespoke, innovative graphics to celebrate the production house theme and reflect the output of the various departments. The project is due for completion in Autumn 2014. All photography by Hufton + Crow.

A BAR

PROJECT GALLERY

DESTINATION BAR
RPW Design has completed the re-design of the A Bar, a chic new cocktail bar in the InterContinental Amstel, Amsterdam. Set within the InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam the bar has been designed to attract a younger crowd without alienating the very loyal following that only the best of the best hotels enjoy. As well as walking the tightrope between appealing to a younger audience whilst retaining its traditional customer base, Jan Wilson of RPW Design acknowledged that one of her biggest challenges was the A Bars limited back-of-house space, and its connections to the rest of the building. Part of her strategy to overcome these challenges was the introduction of a striking light installation, comprising eight individual light fittings created from hand-blown glass. After tendering, these were manufactured to Jans specification by a supplier based in Austria. The fittings turned out to be one of the most challenging areas of the design. The smoky blue of the light fittings is reflected in the colour of the leather used for the bespoke chairs, adding to the contemporary lux feel of the A Bar. Quality craftsmanship and materials are used throughout, from the bronze chain mail curtains and solid timber broad plank floors, to the polished gold finish back bar and feature shelving units.

BUDAPEST BEAUTY
The public areas of the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest have undergone a remarkable transformation by MKV Design. The Design teams courageous vision for the public areas firmly places the hotel in the present, enhancing the dramatic scale of the interior yet also creating a sequence of unique spaces that are inviting and exciting for overseas guests and local people alike. Key to the designers re-planning of the lobby was the replacement of the staircase leading up to the first floor function and meeting rooms. A modern interpretation of the conventional grand staircase is now one of the first elements that greets guests upon arrival, a magnificent staircase which curves around the edge of the lobby and is as much a work of art as functional stairway. Constructed in an elegant brown stone against a glazed-over Crystalux wall, its decorative and perforated metal balustrade, reminiscent of the Art Nouveau styling for which Budapest is famed, sweeps up and wraps around the first floor where it looks over the lobby atrium. Blue Fox The Bar is intimate and clubby in ambience with its dark walnut timber floor and tables together with richly toned upholstery to the seating. Lighting is low and discreet, supplemented by the play of reflections from mirrored nooks and columns. The deep glow of the cobalt blue acrylic bar surround, inset with mesh and suggestive of a soda siphon, completes the sophisticated vibe of the space. Located within the central atrium, The Living Room is a modern interpretation of Budapests traditional coffee house culture. This is a deeply comfortable area and a quiet contrast to the theatricality of the lobby.

GET AHEAD WITH CPD

Managing your own growth as a professional designer
As the pre-eminent professional body, the British Institute of Interior Design is committed to encouraging and supporting creativity and competence in the eld of interior design. It is our aim to facilitate best practice, offer practical professional support, provide development opportunities and deliver high quality education to our members. ontinuing Professional Development (CPD) is a common term shared by numerous professions in many countries. It is the way by which all professionals maintain and update their knowledge and skills after qualication. It is a requirement of membership of the BIID that a number of core CPDs are undertaken each year. CPD is a combination of approaches, ideas and techniques that can help you to manage your own learning and growth. The focus of CPD is rmly on results and the benets that professional development can bring you. It provides an opportunity to update personal and professional skills, a platform to engage with experts in the industry and a forum for the exchange of ideas and best practice. But CPD is more than a membership obligation. Participating in the programme ensures continued expertise in the design process, practice and regulatory matters in our rapidly changing industry. Such professional development is a fundamental part of a designers working life, enabling them to keep up-to-date with current best practice, drives skills improvement and progress in their career and their business. It also provides designers with a platform to engage with experts in the industry, providing a practical forum for the exchange of ideas and advice. In short, CPD will help keep designers at the leading edge of the profession. For these reasons, this autumn, the BIID has an extensive CPD calendar designed to help members keep up to date in this increasingly regulated and litigious world. For example, a properly drafted and comprehensive contract is essential for any interior design project. Not only is using one a requirement of Institute membership, it provides essential protection for you and your client. Our latest CPD session which focuses on interior design contracts is specifically designed to guide and help members through this process. We have spent many years developing two contracts: ID/10 and CID/12. These contracts, published in partnership with RIBA Publishing, have been written by a legal expert, with the input of experienced interior designers, to ensure that between them they are suitable for every interior design project. In our contracts seminar, Colin Jones, partner at Hewitsons, operators of the BIID legal helpline, will guide attendees through the key clauses of the recently updated CID/12 contract in plain English. At the BIID we are committed to helping members to develop their professional skills to meet their own particular needs. Our Professional Practice series of seminars, led by renowned design business consultant, Dr Rachel Smart, will cover a variety of significant topics to help interior designers develop their business skills and improve practice management. From understanding strategy and writing a business plan to financial management and accounting, these sessions should prove invaluable to all designers who attend. I

The programme of study is focused on the present and future requirements of the design profession and provides an opportunity to study at a higher level, developing and analysing knowledge and skills relevant to the industry. A sequence of structured taught modules encourages you to explore new areas and provides a flexible approach within which you can pursue a research pathway. STYLISH SECONDARY GLAZING

Having recently joined The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) as an Industry Member, Selectaglaze has launched a brochure entitled Designed to Preserve your Style, produced specically with designers in mind. Secondary glazing is a very practical and sympathetic way of markedly improving comfort levels in both traditional and modern buildings. It can reduce heat loss by more than half, eliminate drafts and will act as a signicant barrier to noise. Safety and security can also be enhanced when strengthened glass and locking systems are tted. This leads to a more comfortable environment with improved energy performance. Selectaglaze recognises that functionality and aesthetics are key considerations when treating windows. Their units are therefore designed to have minimal visual impact, a particularly important consideration for listed buildings, and are available in many styles with an extensive range of colours to complement the interior dcor. Selectaglaze can provide wide ranging technical advice, drawing assistance and samples for viewing. The company also offers a RIBA approved CPD Seminar covering Acoustics, Thermal Insulation and Security. SPOTLIGHT: VERSITAL UK

WHEN IN ROME
Bathe as the Romans do. Versital takes bathrooms into the 21st century
Versital was established in 1988 by a British manufacturer and offers beautiful, high-quality bathroom surfaces in a wide range of marble and granite nishes. Versital is used to create fabulously high-end surfaces that are ideal for domestic and commercial bathrooms and washrooms. VERSITAL IS VERSATILE It can be fashioned into shower wall panels, vanity tops and shower trays. Its available in 90 different colourways and offers a range of natural-look marble and granite nishes, and a brilliantly contemporary sparkle nish. In fact, Versitals marbled nishes are so realistic they have been used in the Roman Baths in Bath. One of the most popular of Versitals nishes is Arabesque, a white marble-look surface threaded through with black veins that has the richness and look of Carrara Marble. Speciers and designers are also installing the popular Noir Reect, a black nish shot with sparkling silver ecks to create stunning effects. Another popular nish that screams elegance and sophistication is the Graphite granite. Colour consistency of Versital is a huge plus. Unlike natural stone where variations in cut and sourcing of the material can create inconsistencies of nish, Versitals colour consistency and nish is assured. 100% WATERPROOF AND NONPOROUS Unlike natural marble and stone, Versital is 100 per cent waterproof and stain resistant
Versital bathroom with panels, top and oor: Versitals exibility and high-end nish is used to fabulous effect to create a seamless luxury oor and surround for this jacuzzi bath.

making it the ideal material for use in the bathroom. Whereas marble and granite are naturally porous and need to be treated to ensure theyre water-tight, Versital products come nished and ready for use. In addition, unlike natural stone products, Versital doesnt stain, even when subjected to astringent bathing and cleaning products. MANUFACTURED TO SPECIFICATION Another attraction for designers is that Versital is manufactured to specication. Unlike natural marble and granite, where there is often a high degree of wastage after cutting, Versital can be made to measure. Its also only needs ordinary wood-working tools, rather than masonry tools and, if necessary, can be cut on site with minimum effort and mess. Drilling and xing into Versital, too, is also a whole lot easier than into traditional tiled surfaces. BESPOKE SHOWER TRAYS Versitals most popular product is its made-to-measure shower trays. Manufactured to exact design specications in any shape or size, available in the full colour palette. These are a brilliant alternative to traditional wetrooms. Being manufactured in one piece, there

are no seems or joints to cause weakness or leakages so theyre waterproof and water-tight. Theyre also being used in larger shower areas and for bathrooms for clients with mobility issues; a designer recently ordered a three metre long Versital shower tray for a client. Versital shower trays are also safer than those made of natural products. Unlike shower oors manufactured from natural stone, all Versital shower trays have a category 2 certied anti-slip base, making them suitable for all commercial installations as well as domestic. Unlike tiles or other natural bathroom surfaces, Versital is actually warm to the touch and works in conjunction with underoor heating systems. MULTIPLE BASIN WASHROOM VANITY TOPS As well as domestic bathrooms, Versital is ideally suited to the Boutique hotel market, offering a luxury nish and high-end look. Versital vanity tops with multiple basins are also perfect for commercial washrooms and bathrooms. For more information telephone 01204 380780, email sales@versital.co.uk quoting Interior Design Today, or visit www.versital.co.uk.

DESIGNER PROFILE

DESIGNER PROFILE: BLANCA SANCHEZ

Jade Tilley speaks to Blanca Sanchez about Gaudi, nature and the emotion of design
Halo Design Interiors, headed up by Blanca Sanchez, is an interior design consultancy based in Weybridge, Surrey. With over 16 years experience in the interior design industry, Blanca and her dedicated team of talented interior designers and interior architects offer a professional, personalised and comprehensive design service for their discerning clients. lanca spent some of her formative years in rural Spain and later in Barcelona, making for a very cultured approach to her designs. Inspired by Antonio Gaudi and his use of nature and its transformative abilities, Blanca talks to IDT about replicating design, Alberto Pinto and an ongoing designer/client relationship. What is your earliest memory of something you designed? I cant say I have one clear memory of something I physically designed but I remember always being very interested in how your surrounding environment affects you. My first experience of applying this was at university where I was constantly changing my room, moving it round, shifting furniture, changing and adapting things. I only had a small box room so it was a challenge to create something new each time but I would change it each week. I like to alter the environment around me and see how it affects mood and ambience. Who are your design inspirations? Every time I am asked this I always come back to Alberto Pinto, a designer in the true sense of the word. He represents, not one particular style but a bravery in design that I admire. His work is incredibly eclectic but you really believe in it and the interpretations that you can take from it. Pinto very much designed for the space and was known for his bold use of colour. I think some of this design philosophy has been slightly lost in a sense. Nowadays people take influence from other designers and aim to replicate what has gone before us. I think that what Pintos work shows is that, while admiration and inspiration for previous artists is a good thing, we are all responsible for designing for the future and we must be confident in the way we do it. I think that much of this comes down to educating the client on what they can achieve. Designers are very capable at designing as a

BLANCA SANCHEZ
very visual level as a picture editor had a big impact on me and I think it is very much reected now in how we at Halo present our projects. What is it about the arts and interior design that fascinates you so much? It is just so visual. If you distil it down in terms of the effect it can have on you, design can affect your mood, which in turn affects your life. This is a big impact and a huge responsibility on the part of the designer. The idea that we are changing a part of peoples lives when we design for them is a fantastic feeling. The way they want to live and feel can be reected in the design and that is why I love my job so much. Where is the majority of your work based and have you ever worked or lived anywhere else? Much of our work is based in London, Surrey and the Home Counties but we have recently worked on a ski chalet, which took us to Courchevel. I previously lived in Barcelona for a year where I was surrounded by the works of Antonio Gaudi. I also grew up visiting my family in rural Spain during every school holiday. Both of these experiences had a massive affect on me. Barcelona is bursting with architecture and you cannot help but be inspired by the likes of Gaudis Cathedral. He very cleverly took something very traditional and classic and fused it with elements of nature, making it a hybrid of old and new and now essentially, timeless. How has this helped to shape and inuence your ideas on design? I like the idea of using good raw materials. I like to take natural elements and see what I can do with it. Stone in particular is such a beautiful, natural material and really is a joy to work with. Re-establishing that link with nature is something I enjoy doing through my projects, bringing the outside in and challenging conceptions of certain materials. How would you dene your design style? I dont specically have one design style and this is quite deliberate. I design for the space and the client but naturally I would say that Im quite eclectic and have an organic sense to my style. Im also quite emotionally involved, I like to know how people feel about materials, colours and spaces and I like to bring raw materials into contemporary spaces. What was your rst ever design commission? I cant remember my first ever design commission but one of the earlier projects I worked on at Hill House Interiors was the penthouse apartment in the old Harrods warehousing building in Trevor Square in Knightsbridge. The scale of the project and the skeleton style of the building was impressive. It was industrial meets glamour. What was your biggest ever design commission? It would have to be a 12,000 sq/ft new-build commission on St Georges Hill in Weybridge, Surrey. I am in fact still working for them, having met them before they knocked down their old house, through the build and now as they are taking their time creating the home of their dreams. It has been three years and weve been through the whole process so far together, including structural and internal elements. Being such a big project it has somewhat taken over the lives of the owners and so, a complete trust within the designer/client relationship was needed. Im proud to say that we have established a very strong working relationship. Both myself and the client have learned a great deal during this process and if I was to pick an advocate for Halo Designs I would say it is this client. If you hadnt become an interior designer what would you be doing? Id be working for the World Wildlife Fund or a similar company or charity. I love the idea of helping animals who are struggling and Id like to think that this is a path I could have trodden. Im a great believer in humans working with nature, not against it. www.halodesigninteriors.com

reflection of some inspiration and clients must trust that we can best interpret their wishes into a workable and imaginative space. Which design school did you train at and how do you feel design schools have evolved since you were studying? Have a post-graduate degree from the Chelsea College of Art and Design and have also studied Spanish and History, all of which I believe have helped to shape my ideas and expressions as a designer. I actually came into interior design a little later in my career but this has certainly allowed me to take in a mature and considered approach to my designs. When I was in education there was a great deal of hand drawing, which I really loved. Everything now is very much CAD related so its a different technical ball game all together. I

think one of the biggest gems I will take away from my time studying is that there is a whole world to be discovered and used as inspiration. Experience makes for a very well rounded designer. The opportunity to be in that environment was so exciting, a truly amazing experience. I actually think that it has been my experiences since design school that have really dened me though. Education was the launch pad from which I could go and discover. Have you ever dabbled in other forms of design not necessarily linked to the world of interior design? Outside of university my rst job was with Ebury Press, part of Random House. I was an assistant to an editor and was responsible for editing the text and artwork for publications such as Victoria & Albert Museum and Kew Gardens. Being submerged in the art world and working on a

What do you prioritise when designing a bedroom space as the most essential to the look and feel of the room?

Image: Bedroom by Halo Design

Blanca Sanchez, Halo Design Interiors

We start with the bed, as the focal point of the room. In a contemporary interior, we may specify a low bed, under-lit and oating off the oor, with a minimal headboard; in a glamorous interior we may select an upholstered divan with chrome feet and a velvet upholstered headboard, perhaps spanning the whole wall behind the bed, to give impact.

Lindsey Rendall, Rendall & Wright

Aside from the bed, which is the obvious focal point depicting the style of the bedroom, the ambience of the space is created by the lighting schemes used. Working/task lights are a necessity in any space; however within a bedroom localised lighting enables the space to feel intimate, relaxing and restful. Colour plays a role in how we react and feel, this should be carefully considered to ensure the completed bedroom has the desired atmosphere.

Lynne Hunt, Lynne Hunt London

The ultimate luxury in residential bedroom design is his-and-her bathrooms and dressing rooms with exquisite cabinetry, sumptuous nishes and attering illumination. Often these spaces are equal in size or larger than the bedroom itself. Views and circulation ow are key in hotel guestrooms, since space is at a premium. In both scenarios, we ensure that imaginative spaceplanning, innovative technology and beautiful lighting create an utter sense of luxury, comfort, and style.

Nico Yiannikkou Y2DC

When designing a bedroom the criteria should remain; the psychology is of the utmost importance. The design must be well balanced. Furniture, lighting, fabrics etc., all need to be considered as a package. Never clutter a bedroom. Lighting is the key element. Allowing for mood and task light helps provides zones with a space without physical barriers. Luxurious living is not necessarily reserved for the wealthy, it can be achieved by adhering to these basic principals.

Rebecca Tucker, Suna Interior Design

Comfort is always of the utmost importance when we design a bedroom. Ultimately the room should feel like its a haven for the occupier. Texture, luxury, comfort and colour are all of great importance. We often use wallpaper to create depth and pay a great deal of attention to the soft furnishings. And if we could offer one piece of advice: always use the biggest and most comfortable bed possible in the room, let every guest feel treated.

WELCOME HOME
Mariel Brown, Head of Trends at Seymourpowell explores the home trends that will be impacting our clients most sacred of spaces in the future
Home is a highly emotive word. At its best it is a concept that signies our own little corner of the world where we feel confortable and in control. Yet the world is changing, as a result, so too is our home environment. The tranquil home In recent years the home has taken an imperative roll as a space that provides its occupants with sanctuary. As political, financial and environmental instability weigh heavily on our minds, we increasingly desire a tranquil space where we can regain our emotional composure. This trend is expressing itself in multiple ways throughout the domestic environment. We are witnessing a renewed interest in the creation of quiet spaces, for example home libraries or writing desks. The bathroom is arguably the most solitary and personal space within the home. Here we are seeing a softening of geometry as ceramics manufactures respond to this trend with product forms that feel comfortable and cocooning. In home furnishing we can see the trend for tranquillity being expressed in colour palettes; all the big design fairs of 2013 have been awash with muted pastels and calming neutral accessories to help turn the home into a peaceful haven. The self-expressive home The economic downturn has stagnated many housing markets across the globe. Interestingly one of the silver linings to the dark cloud of austerity has been that our houses have become more homely. During the boom period prior to 2008, many viewed their house as an investment to be sold on. They decorated conservatively to create inoffensive interiors that would not polarise potential buyers. Now this has changed. Without the prohibitive style restrictions of an impending sale, people have become far more expressive in their living spaces. They are letting their personality come to the fore. One of the key manifestations of this trend has been the revival of curation, where people gather together and show off the objects that are most precious to them. In the Selfexpressive Home, novelty is a key way of gaining social kudos. As the Internet has made access to so much so easy, the hard to come by has become prized and celebrated. Along with exhibiting our personality through curation, we are also expressing it through our in home activities. 'Maker Culture' is growing fast. This is spurred on by online tutorials and facilitated by ecommerce sites that make it easy to sell products. As a result hobby rooms are on the rise as people carve out personal space within the home to indulge in the things they love. The responsive home Technology is an unstoppable, omnipresent force in our everyday lives. Smart portable devices have brought connectivity into every room in the home. This entwining of the high tech with the domestic environment is only set to continue as everything from our TVs and fridges, to our cars and vacuum cleaners, become more intelligent and connected. The annual consumer electronic fair (CES) in Las Vegas is widely regarded as the place to gain a glimpse into the future of technology. Here it was clear that our homes are becoming more reactive and responsive. The self-quantified movement, where people track and monitor personal data to enhance their performance, has expanded into the domestic environment. Standout examples were intelligent, energy saving thermostats that learn our habits to improve temperature control in our homes, and devices that monitor the wellbeing of our plants and pets so that we can better care for them. These new releases hinted at a future where our homes will be able to pre-empt our needs and respond to them accordingly with minimal interaction required from inhabitants. www.seymourpowell.com @Seymourpowell

SPOTLIGHT: JAMES LATHAM

THE NATURAL TOUCH

Next generation of surface decors land at James Latham
The natural choice in timber and panel products, James Latham, is now offering Natural Touch, Kronospans newest innovation in wood panel manufacturing. atural Touch is the first embossed-in-register melamine board where the grain texture precisely matches the surface finish. Now, the authentic look and feel of real timber - the graining, the subtle variations of shade and tone - is accessible on almost any project. This physical depth is achieved by precisely synchronising the surface structure to perfectly match the image of the wood grain below. The result is an organic texture that is pre-finished, extremely durable, easy to work with and offers a consistency in both colour and grain. This means that architects, interior designers, contractors and furniture makers can now achieve an authentic rustic realism using melamine. With Natural Touch, the applications are almost limitless. It can be used for cladding walls, building furniture, creating fixtures as well as making striking punctuations to spaces and surfaces and the versatility of this product has made it particularly popular within the shop fitting and hospitality sectors. James Lathams Group Product Champion for Melamine, Paul Morson, commented, The reaction from the market to this product has been really positive. Interest has not only come from top end shop tters, but also bespoke kitchen and wardrobe manufacturers who want to offer something different from their competitors. Weve also seen lots of enquiries from exclusive designer outlets and retailers because not only is it a cheaper option than a finished veneered board but every board of Natural Touch retains a consistent appearance. Supplied in 14 different decors including rare timbers such as Hemlock Nordique, Elm Lava, Cinnamon Walnut and three kinds of Oak and with a range of matching edgings, Natural Touch is now available directly from stock at all nine of James Lathams UK-wide panel distribution sites. The Natural Touch range also carries full FSC certication. For more information telephone 0116 257 3415, email marketing@lathams.co.uk or visit www.lathamtimber.co.uk

Charlie Green offers the design antidote to effective office spaces
Ofce design impacts productivity and wellbeing in the workplace, with natural light and open space encouraging employee engagement and interaction. Despite overwhelming anecdotal evidence, there remains an alarming apathy to the creation of innovative ofce spaces. the bump factor and it can work for one company in one building or perhaps even more powerfully in multi-let buildings with a variety of occupiers with the opportunity to work together and share skills. The design of the workplace also speaks volumes about the employer; it is a very obvious channel to demonstrate what the business is about and acts as an extension of its brand and culture. For example, Red Bulls HQ has exposed brick, a foosball table and skateboarder graphics, expressing much about the makeup of the people that work there as well as the demographic of their target audience. Of course it's not practical or affordable for every office to redesign but small changes like using glass and mirrored surfaces to increase the amount of natural light, creating areas with comfortable sofas to encourage socialising and having generous kitchens that are not just an afterthought can make a big difference. Todays businesses should be aware of how office design affects employees. Finishes, colours and dressing space can transform an area. Furniture and lighting are critical, and being generous with spaces away from the desk is a fundamental. The reality is all of us have the opportunity to have better workplaces. I The Ofce Group provides exible ofces and meeting rooms. They also have ClubRooms, the drop-in work spaces. The Ofce Group focuses focus on building spaces that enable every way of working, for every sort of business. Charlie cofounded The Ofce Group with Olly in late 2003. A qualied Chartered Surveyor, his exposure to the conventional ofce market and serviced ofces inspired the need to create a product that would stand apart from the competition giving more consideration to how people work - simpler, design-led, greener and still offer value. theofcegroup.co.uk

e all work differently from one another and each day is different for each individual. We need a variety of spaces to work in; areas for quiet, focus and undisturbed work, spaces for casual or formal meetings and areas for collaboration. This last area is becoming increasingly relevant in todays workplace where technology is advancing at such a pace; it is releasing us from our previously tethered workstations. This enables us to interact and engage more with others and be more innovative. Companies are increasingly paying heed to this and attempting to facilitate these interactions through the clever design of space. Steve Jobs recognised this at Pixar where he redesigned the ofces to position all of the toilets in one location, forcing each of his employees to meet others. And ideas were borne as serendipity ruled. He named it

Pushing the boundaries between design and delivery!

Regardless the difculty or the constraints in which an Interior Designer is held. Whether it is an unusually shaped window or their clients desire for an end product that can only be described as beyond the bounds of reason, the designer still has to nd a way to deliver.
As Rene Dekker says, Deanswood are willing to push the boundaries when it comes to service. And we do! We dont ask our clients for their blind trust - we have to earn it. And we do . . . we do! Blind Trust: A term not normally associated within our industry. Nevertheless an appropriate phrase when it comes to Deanswood Interiors. Our clients know that they can trust us to keep to our quality, delivery and installation promises - hence the play on the term - Blind Trust. So, why not put your trust in Deanswood Interiors on a future project. Youll not regret it - guaranteed. Yes, guaranteed. We are justly proud of our commitment to our clients and we can guarantee the quality of our work because from interpretation to installation we utilize an in-house quality control system called DiDii. You can learn more about Deanswood and the Didii system at www.deanswood.co.uk. Or, if you prefer to talk, call 01634 814444 and ask to be put through to one of our joint Managing Directors - Keith or David Porter.
