Summary of music questionnaires Question 1 I asked 10 males and 10 females to fill in my questionnaire during their college lunch break;

this was so that I had an even distribution between both genders to make the differences between them more obvious. I chose lunch because more people would be around so I could choose a selection from different groups of friends making it diverse. Question 2 Gender Ages 17

16 18 Male 4 4 2 female 5 5 0 I tried to find a range of ages however the year 13 break had already passed so it was harder for me to find 18 yr olds. Question3
7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0

male female

It is clear from this graph that some magazines are more popular to different genders but it also shows that some are for a different target audience. From this I can see that lots of teenagers do not buy and read magazines as much as they mightve a few generations ago, I can presume this is because of the internet, they can now find out the information about their bands through websites. From this graph it is also clear that some magazines are for certain genders, for example no males read top of the pops which are pop and hip hop/ indie magazines or billboard however only males read Q magazine and NME.

Question 4
6 5 4 3 male 2 1 0 female

From this information I can tell that a lot of music genres arent popular with my target audience or specifically the people I asked. For example: ballad, dance, drum and base, classical, classic rock and hip hop. No people said they liked this genre. Some genres were only popular with one genre, for example only guys liked dubstep and jazz the most, whereas only girls most popular were indie, R&B, scream and country music. However this is only a small group of my target audience, these results depend on the individual I ask. Pop music was equally popular with both boy and girls. Also rock was popular with both genders but more males preferred it than females. Question 5 How regularly do you download music?
6 5 4 3 2 1 0 daily weekly monthly never male female

This information tells me how much up to date music my target audience buy/ download. Males are more likely to regularly update their music daily on the other hand females are more likely to never download music. This helps my magazine planning because I know I can reach out to males with free downloads whereas this might not entice the female audience as much.

Question 6 How many concerts have you attended?

7 6 5 4 male 3 2 1 0 0 1--5 6--10 11--15 16--20+ female

I wasnt expecting these results, I expected more people to attend concerts however this could just be the people I asked, however from this I can tell that the female audience would be more interested in concert information and dates in my magazine, this could be a selling point for the female audience, as they are more likely to attend a concert.

Question 7 What sections of a music magazine do you enjoy most?

most enjoyable magazine section for females

sales and dates 10%

Q&A interview 20% behind the scenes with the artists 30% free posters 30% chart reviews 0% free flowing interviews 10% letters page 0%

behing the scenes with artists 10%

most enjoyable section for males

sales and dates 0%

chart reviews 10%

Q&A interviews 40% free posters 40% free flowing interviews letters page 0% 0%

This has helped me decide what kind of article my double page spread will be, both males and females enjoy posters which means they would enjoy a big image in the article, if I want to interest the female audience I would use a behind the scenes article, however if the article was aimed at males I would use a Q&A style interview.

Question 8

Female favourite bands Band/ artists

Biffy Clyro Biffy Clyro Scouting for girls Mumford and sons Mumford and sons Imagine dragons Imagine dragons Paramore Blink 182 Kesha Rock rock indie Indie/ country Indie/ country indie indie Rock/ pop Punk rock pop

genre

male favourite bands Band/ artists

One republic thousand foot Krutch David Bisbal Against the current The copper bottom band Linkin park Linkin park Daft punk Twin Atlantic Bring me the horizon

genre
Alternative rock Christian rock Pop/ rock pop Blues and jazz rock rock electronica Alternative rock Screamo/ heavy metal

This gives me examples of what artists and bands would entice the target audience to read the magazine, from this I can tell that Linkin park, Imagine Dragons, Mumford and sons and Biffy Clyro would attract big audiences as multiple people in my small focus group had listed them as their favourites. The genre also tells me that indie music is more popular with females just as I found out from question 4.

Question 9 Are you a fan of indie music?

female: are you a fan of indie music?

no 10%

yes 90%

male: are you a fan of indie music?

no 30%

yes 70%

Even though indie isnt most popular to a male audience form this question I was able to find out that 70% of the males who filled in this questionnaire enjoy it. This means that my music magazine would still be popular with the male audience and they might still buy it, this is because their favourite genre of rock also overlaps with indie to make indie rock, indie rock bands are very popular. I am certain that females would like my magazine as they are a big fan of indie music with only a tiny 10% (1 person) disliking it.

Question 10 Which indie/ indie rock band have you heard of most/ enjoy most? Number 1-3 from list given

band Florence and the machines

Male votes 0

Female votes 2

Blur 1 0 Muse 3 3 Imagine dragons 6 7 Artic monkeys 0 0 The killers 3 2 Oasis 2 4 Mumford & Sons 2 5 The script 1 3 Radiohead 1 0 Coldplay 4 0 Kaiser Chiefs 2 0 Kings Of Leon 4 1 Keane 0 2 Fun 1 1 This information helps me to decide what artist I could use as a selling point, these are all indie artists and all have been popular in the last 10 years however Imagine dragons is a new band from Vegas and have topped the charts recently in 2013, I think this is why they were the most mentioned band from both genders. Most people have heard of their song radioactive which got so popular that it was used as a track in both a game and a film. On the other hand older bands such as Keane, Radiohead, Artic Monkeys etc, werent as well-known, even though they have no.1s and memorable songs they still wouldnt be as popular or known to the younger generation, if I wanted to entice an older audience I would use these older bands.

Question 11 Can you name a SOLO indie artist? Females: 6 said no 4 said yes: Jake bug, Lenka, Ben Howard and Nina Nesbitt were the artists they listed Male: 9 said no 1 said yes: Gary Lightbody From this I can tell that Indie bands do better than solo artists as they arent well known to a large majority of my target audience. This tells me that I should use a band instead of a solo artists, as they are more poular.

Question 12 Would you rather see an article on an entire band or a solo artist?
9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 artist band male vote female vote

From this I can again see that bands are more popular than artists, this could be because in articles you get their whole back story and a band would act more like a family. This again tells me that I should use a band for my article instead of a solo artist if I want the article to be more popular. You also can get more information from multiple people from interviewing a band.

Question 13 Do you think music can create problems in society?

8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 yes no

male vote female vote

Equal responses from both genders told me that a variety of people think that music can be offensive and cause problems in society however the people who said no had strong opinions, saying it was the people not the music itself. This also tells me that this opinion is dived and it depends on the type of music, the most mentioned was rap music. People said it was sexist, violent and racists and links to gang culture.

Question 14 Do you think you are stereotyped by the music you listen to?
7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 yes no male vote female vote

Question 15 Do you think music magazines are worth buying or would you rather read this information on an online music site?
7 6 5 4 male vote 3 2 1 0 buy read online female vote
