COURSEDESCRIPTION
(Credits:3)Iamexcitedtobespendingthesemesterwitheachandeveryoneofyou!Inthiscourse,wewillcover

manytopicsintegraltounderstandingcounselingpsychology.Oneofmyhopesistohelpfacilitatecriticalthinking aboutthesevarioustopicsandtheoryincounseling.Thiscourseisahigherlevelcourse,intendedforstudentswho havesuccessfullycompletedgeneralpsychologyandideallyhaveexperienceinatleastoneotherpsychologycourse. Specifically,thiscoursewillprovideanoverviewofvarioustheoreticalapproachestocounselinganddiscussthe implicationsoftheseapproachestoourunderstandingofhumannature,change,andpotential.Inadditiontolearning counselingpsychologytheories,psychotherapyoutcomeresearchandethicswillbepresentedanddiscussed.While studentswillgainanoverviewofthetherapeuticprocess,anintroductiontobasiccounselingskills,andsomeofthe issuesofpsychotherapypractice;thiscourseisnotdesignedtoteachstudentshowtoconductpsychotherapy.Students shouldexpecttoleavethiscoursewithabetterunderstandingofwhatthefieldofcounselingpsychologyis,what counselingpsychologistsdo,andmajorissuesimpactingthefieldtoday.Akeycomponentofthecourseisthatstudents areselfreflectiveandchallengethemselvestothinkcriticallyabouttheory,research,andpractice.Thenatureofthe courseandassignmentsarebestsuitedforadvanced(thirdorfourthyear)psychologymajors.Itisstronglysuggested thatstudentshavesuccessfullycompletedPPE3003(PersonalityPsychology)andapsychologyresearchmethods course. Thiscourseisintendedasabridgetograduatestudyandworkincounselingpsychologyandrelatedfieldsthatinvolve dealingwithothersindistressortransition.Techniquesoftheseapproaches,implicationsforresearch,andmodesof practiceincounselingwillbediscussedandpracticed.Thecourseisintendedtoprovidestudentswithanoverviewof thetherapeuticprocess,anintroductiontorudimentarycounselingskills,andissuesrelatedtothepracticeof psychotherapy(e.g.,ethics,assessment,andlicensure).Note,however,thatthiscourseisnotdesignedtoteach studentshowtoconductpsychotherapy. Thematerialcoveredinthiscoursewillhelpyoutobeginansweringsomequestions(andmoreimportantly,begin askingnewquestions)aboutyourinterestinworkingwithotherstopromotechange,andyourbeliefsabouthowpeople change.Thesequestionsmightinclude:Howdopeoplemakemeaningfulchangesintheirlives?Whatarethecausesof psychologicalconcerns,problems,dysfunction,and/orpathology?Whatmakesupsuccessfultherapy?Isthefieldof counselingrightforme? EVALUATIONCRITERIA
EXAMS
Therewillbetwomultiplechoiceexamsduringthesemesteronthedateslistedinthetentativescheduleofthe syllabus.ThemidtermandfinalexamWILLBEheldduringclasstime.Themidtermandfinalexamswillbecomposedof multiplechoicequestions.Themidtermandfinalexamswillcoverinformationfromallreadingsandlecturematerials.

ThefinalexamwillNOTbecumulative.

MAKEUPEXAMS
