Ask the group: How do people communicate? Name as much ideas as possible [movie, talking, radio, phone, MSN, mail, letters, personal, TV,]. As you can see, there are many different ways of communication but the all are based on the same model. Draw the model (flip):

0:04

Present the model: The SENDER is sending a message to RECEIVER. He is using a CODE a form of a message which has to be DECODED by RECEIVER. It is not always easy because in communication process there is usually some NOISE. When the message reaches the RECEIVER he gives a feedback to the SENDER. Ask the group: Lets try to find some characteristics of presented elements. Write down their propositions. o SENDER gender, age, experience, nationality, IQ o RECEIVER the same o ENCODING What can be perceived as a code? words, gestures, language, light, colours, sound, slang, tone of voice, etc. o NOISE sounds, illness, technical problems, etc. o DECODING - There are some things about which we do not mention/talk about (taboo subjects), but they influence how the sender is perceived. What can it be? - religion, humor, politics, national issues, history, sex, morality. o FEEDBACK Does feedback always mean using words? No, it can be given also by gestures, mimical facial movements, even silence.

As we have already said the message can be sent by using words but also by nonverbal ways of communication. Ask the group: Is the verbal or nonverbal communication more important when you want to deliver a message? NONVERBAL I want you to work in 3 groups now. Please count from 1 to 3. Reach group gets a flip with two questions and a marker to write down their ideas. 1. If we consider 3 channels: 1.words, 2.tone of voice and 3.body language, how many percent of information do you thing is received through each channel? Please, write down your propositions. 2. What can be perceived as nonverbal communication? Write down your ideas. [Here you can give one example before they start - see the answers below.]

Now ask each group to present their answers. [Short presentation of each group] Than present the numbers according to scientific research: - words ~ 7% - tone of voice ~ 38% - body language ~ 55% Write down more examples for question 2. if they had not mentioned them: mime, gestures, position, dress code, looks, surroundings, symbols, tools/things which the person is using.

0:18 Do a short round each person shows what is his hobby/what is he interested in without using words. 0:30 As you can see, nonverbal communication is very important. Now lets move to role of cultural diversity in communication

Communication in diverse cultures( 15)

Description

In different cultures we speak different languages, but as we have already observed, words are only a small part of a message. The body language is different. The distance between people is different. Imagine that there are two persons, they had met 2 times before, they had been to the same party once. o How do they act when they meet on the street? Does it depend on their nationality? o How will a Brazilian act? How Chinese? Do you think there will be a difference? Choose 2 or 3 people from a group to present how they act in their country when they meet a friend on the street. [Tell them that they can present it during workshops with Polish students.] People sometimes use symbols to communicate. But you really have to be careful because something what is perceived as nice, can be perceived as something rude on the other side of the world. Now, present this gestures and ask if they know what they mean.

Role of emotions in communication process ( 15)

0:00 Emotions have a huge role in communication process in a positive or negative sense. Do you think it is easier to control positive or negative emotions? Why? 0:02 Control over negative emotions can be something difficult. Sometimes we even do not know that they have an impact on what we say and we can easily hurt somebody or destroy his creativity, motivation. Have you ever heard about killer statements? o Killer statements are negative comments that kill the feelings, thoughts, creative activities, and words of other people. The killer statements put down the achievements of other people. After being put down or insulted a few times, people may be reluctant to talk to or do anything for the insulter. They may fear taking another risk. They are sensitive about sharing a part of themselves. They are trying to avoid being hurt once again. o Show them in a flip some examples of killer statements: - Now? What do you want??? - That is such a waste of paper - You never use tools the right way - How many times have I told you the way it should be done! o Ask the group: Why do people use killer statements? - Because they do not control their emotions - Because they do not think before they say - Because they do not think about the results of using them Do a short exercise. Try to find more positive way to send the communicates in a flip. Example NO: Now? What do you want??? BUT: I will be glad to answer your question after I finish this task
