ULRIC HUSBANDS
Ricky Husbands brings a unique and vibrant crosscultural energy to the music
scene, the product of numerous years of exposure to distinct styles and riddims:
reggae, samba, soca and ballads. Born in Georgetown (Guyana) to Caribbean
immigrants. His introduction to music was through his local church where the gospel
music awakened not only his ability to sing but to perform as well. It was in this
comfort zone of music and audience that Ricky's professional career began to
blossom. Later, through his travels in his native land, Suriname and in neighboring
Brazil, coupled with exposure to many prominent and acclaimed artists, he
assimilated styles and rhythms of many distinct cultures and has translated these
through his own personality into music. After meeting Vibert Aaron, drummer and
producer who revealed this young singer to the professional world, he was soon
opening for artists such as Mighty Sparrow, Lord Kitchner, Boris Gardner, Toots
and the Maytals. While still residing in Guyana, Ricky met renomed guitarist and
composer Rukiza T. Okera, who encouraged him to record some original
music. They then departed to Suriname where through Ricky's brother Febbo met
Antoon Sang Ajang of the Ventu Studios. So the band Duehsmo Syndicate was
formed, and hit songs were released which played throughout Suriname, the
Caribean and Europe. In 1986 they opened for Steel Pulse in the Suriname Football
Stadium, were over 40.000 fans rocked to the new energetic beat.
They were then invited by drummer Yhonna of Obina Shock to perform in Brazil. In
1987 they toured Maranhão, later performing in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and
Brasília. But it was Ricky's stop in Salvador for the Tribute to Bob Marley Festival in
the Castro Alves Theater that truly left an impression. He was immediately enthralled
by the colorful local population, tropical beats and afro riddims. He returned to
Salvador in 1990 where he decided to permanently reside and pursue his budding
musical career. He soon hooked up with producer and keyboard player César Napoli
of Proaudio Studio, who was initiating a musical Cd project with the Jamaican
superstar Jimmy Cliff, entitled Breakout.
Ricky participated in this project, which was later nominated for a Grammy. Whilst
working on his Cd Resolution, also produced by Cesar Napoli, they requested
Jimmy Cliff's participation on one track entitled Harder Now, which he did. This song
became a number one reggae hit on mp3.com in 2000 for two months, From 1991 to
1997, he worked as an opening act and keyboard player for Jimmy Cliff in Brazil and
Latin America. Ricky and Zeed Resolution performed in Fest'in Bahia, opened for
Alfa Blondy, The Wailers and also performed in the Sunsplash Brazil in 1996. In
2001 Ricky joined with Lazzo Matumbi's Carnival Block Coração Rastafari .Drawing
on his success in South America, Ricky decided in 2003 to travel to North America to
spread his music and positive vibes. On September 13th 2003, Ricky and his
keyboard player Kiko Guedes, performed at the Larkfest in Albany City one of the
largest outdoor festival in upstate New York. They also began to record with the
ChainGang label based in Connecticut. In 2004 they returned to the US for four
months, where they performed in venues in NY and Canada, while finishing the
record in Chain Gang Studios. The result of this project, two years in the making, is
Ricky's latest CD Stepping Stone, released in the summer of 2005.
In August 2004, Ricky also released Oneness and Justice, which was produced in
Brazil and Jamaica when Ricky visited the Island in December of 2002, to work with
the prominent producer John "Pops" Dowling of UB40 fame. Four of the songs from
this CD played on XM Satellite Station The Joint channel 101, among other stations
in the Northeastern US.
Back in Brazil Ricky joined with Tomme Viana and recreated Banana Reggae, a
carnival block which debuted during the 2003 /2006 carnival to pulsating crowds of
thousands of partygoers. Special guest Lazo, awards winning reggae star from
Canadá, also participed with Ricky.
In 2006 Ricky will again travel to the US, this time to promote his Stepping Stone cd,
with Chain Gang. He will also be performing in the YouthFest and Irie Music Festival
in Toronto, as well as a two months tour of the southwest US in the Legends Of
Rasta Reggae Tour, in September and October. Plans for 2007 includs recording a
DVD/tour with the Duehsmo Syndicate members, and the new Brazilian DSM .

Seu amigo e Tecladista, a quem chamava de 'meus
olhos'. Não usava óculos no palco. Kiko via por ele.
