B.
Reason (1) Objective: The purpose of this Service Bulletin is to introduce an improved forward fan shaft coupling nut (low pressure compressor (LPC) coupling nut), PN L61427P01. This LPC coupling nut has been improved with new INCO 718 material. (2) Condition/Event(s): The current coupling nut material, MARAGE 250, is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) if the engine is not operated for extended periods and recommended preservation practices are not adhered to. (3) Cause: Engines that are improperly stored or engines with extended periods of non-operation at locations with a corrosion-favorable environment (such as high humidity and/or coastal locations) are at risk of corrosion.

(4)
Improvement: The proposed coupling nut material, INCO 718, is not susceptible to corrosion. The improved LPC coupling nut will not experience the current corrosion and field cracking issue.

periodic inspection or shutdown at latest) for engines improperly stored or engines with extended periods of non-operation at locations with a corrosion-favorable environment (such as high humidity and/or coastal locations). If you have these risk factors, you are at heightened risk for a high cost event. If you have any doubt, then contact your GE representative immediately. NOTE
The LPC coupling nut has a one time use restriction.
NOTE
The referenced work packages (WP) that follow, apply to GEK 103077 for LM6000 PB engines, GEK 105059 for LM6000 PC engines, GEK 105061 for LM6000 PD engines, and GEK 112743 for LM6000 PF engines. A. B. Remove engine from package per packager's manual. Remove variable inlet guide vane (VIGV) case per WP 2110 00 or, if installed, remove inlet frame per SWP 2110 01. Matchmark impeller cover to low pressure (LP) shaft (figure1). Remove 28 bolts securing impeller cover plate. With four jackscrews from jackscrew tool set, 1C9150, remove impeller cover plate. Remove LPC coupling nut, PN 9047M29P03, as follows: (1) (2) Remove retaining ring (figure 2) with pliers, 2C6935. Remove mid shaft to LPC coupling nut with coupling nut wrench, 1C9044, (figure 3) as follows: (a) Install spacer on forward flange of forward fan shaft with five bolts and LPC coupling nuts. Tighten LPC coupling nuts to 135-150 lb ft (183-203 Nm) of torque. Secure support to spacer with four screws. Tighten screws to 40-60 lb in. (4.5-6.8 Nm) of torque. Slide subassembly (torque and indexing tubes) through support and engage key slots in LPC coupling nut. Install torque multiplier, MSE-24, over coupling nut wrench, 1C9044, indexing tube and engage tube splines.

WARNING
USE EXTREME CARE WHEN APPLYING PRESSURE TO SHAFT COUPLING AS COUPLING MAY SUDDENLY DISENGAGE FROM GEAR SHAFT. DROPPING HYDRAULIC CYLINDER COULD CAUSE INJURY TO OPERATOR. (e) Apply torque to torque multiplier, MSE-24, until LPC coupling nut is loose. Remove coupling nut wrench, 1C9044, and remove LPC coupling nut from shaft. Discard LPC coupling nut.
(3)
Clean thread and mating face of mid shaft and forward shaft where LPC coupling nut threads and seats with isopropyl alcohol, C04-035. With depth micrometer, take three equally spaced drop measurements from forward end of mid shaft (tangs) to forward mating face of forward shaft flange. Measure at same oclock position as check dimension measurement. Record as Measured Dimension G.
(4)
(5)
Obtain new LPC coupling nut, L61427P01, measure length of LPC coupling nut at three equally spaced locations, from end of LPC coupling nut castellation to mating/contact surface of LPC coupling nut. Record as Measured Dimension G2 (figure 4). Use dimension drops G from forward shaft mating face to shaft tangs, subtract Measured Dimension G2 from Measured Dimension G. This is the target seat Calculated Dimension G.
(6)
G.
Install new LPC coupling nut, PN L61427P01, as follows: (1) Clean LPC coupling nut threads and mating face with isopropyl alcohol, C04-035. Apply thread lubricant, C02-058, to threads and mating face. Install LPC coupling nut and hand-tighten. With coupling nut wrench, 1C9044, tighten LPC coupling nut to 2,000 lb ft (2,712 Nm) of torque and record wrench angle. Tighten LPC coupling nut to wrench angle of 22 degrees minimum above wrench angle reading for 2,000 lb ft (2,712 Nm) of torque.
(2) (3)
(4)
CAUTION
DO NOT EXCEED TORQUE OF 7,500 LB FT (10,169 NM) OR WRENCH ANGLE OF 27 DEGREES ABOVE WRENCH ANGLE FOR 2,000 LB FT (2,712 NM) OF TORQUE. (5) Continue tightening LPC coupling nut to align slots in LPC coupling nut with slots in end of mid shaft. Do not exceed torque of 7,500 lb ft (10,169 Nm) or wrench angle of 27 degrees. Record angle of LPC coupling nut rotation from 2,000 lb ft (2,712 Nm) of torque to final torque. Record final torque and angle. Remove excessive

thread lubricant, C02-058, from LPC coupling nut. Remove coupling nut wrench, 1C9044. (7) Take three equally spaced drop measurements from forward end of castellation of LPC coupling nut to end of mid shaft. Record as Measured Dimension G. Compare Calculated Dimension G to Measured Dimension G. Difference
(8)
between values must be within +/- 0.005 inch (0.013 mm) of Calculated Dimension G. (9) Install retaining ring (figure 2) using pliers, 2C6935.
(10) Apply thread lubricant, C02-058, to five bolts securing spacer on forward flange of forward fan shaft and final tighten nuts to 275-285 lb ft (373-386 Nm) of torque. (11) Line up matchmarks on impeller cover to LP shaft. (12) Apply thread lubricant, C02-058, to threads of bolts and using 28 bolts previously removed in step A.(4) and install impeller cover plate. Tighten bolts to 100-120 lb in. (11.3-13.6 Nm) of torque. (13) Install VIGV case per WP 2110 00 or install inlet frame per SWP 2110 01. (14) Install engine in package and re-align per packager's manual.
