Confirmation and Promotion Universities Act No 16 of 1978 Confirmation for the Post of Lecturer University Lecturers will be bounded by the provisions of the universities Act No 16 of 1978, and universities (Amendment) Act No. 7 of 1985 and any Amendments thereto or any ordinances, statutes, by laws, regulations, rules, etc., made there under or to any order or laws that will be given or enacted by democratic socialist republic of Sri Lanka or the university Grants Commission, in so far as they are applicable to you. Lecturers (probationary) are required yourself after the first year of your services for a master degree in the relevant field of a full time course of study of at ;least two academic years ( or equivalent part time course of study) with a research component by way of thesis / dissertation or a doctoral degree. Master degree in the relevant field of a minimum duration of 20 months with a substantial research component of masters degree with at least 60 credit units with not less than 15 credit units of research by way of thesis/ dissertation in the relevant field / discipline or doctoral degree. According to the University Grant Commissions Circular No 721, Method of Recruitment for Associate Professor and Professor Senior Lecturer, Gr. II [Non- (Medical/Dental) Method of Recruitment By normal promotion Qualifications A Lecturer may be considered for promotion, if he/she possesses the qualifications as specified Below:(1) (i) A Master's Degree in the relevant field obtained after a full time course of study of at least Two academic years (or an equivalent part-time course of study) with a research component by way of thesis/dissertation or a Doctoral Degree. In the case of Faculties of Science/Applied Science the required qualifications shall be a Masters Degree in the relevant field with full-time research of at least 02 years or a Doctoral Degree. In the case of Faculties of Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Law and Management/ Business Studies, a Masters Degree of one year duration in the relevant field may be accepted when

combined with an evaluated research record inconformity with current guidelines. (See note below) Senior Lecturer, Gr. I Non- (Medical/Dental) Method of Recruitment By normal promotion Qualifications A Senior Lecturer, Gr. II who has completed one year on the maximum of the salary scale or has Served six (06) years in that grade may be considered for promotion. Procedure, the applicant must submit a self assessment setting out the contribution he/she has made since he/ She became a Senior Lecturer, Gr. II in the following fields:Teaching, Research, Dissemination of knowledge, and other University activity A panel appointed by the Senate shall evaluate the above self assessment and make a recommendation. The panel shall consist of the Dean of the relevant Faculty, the Head of the Department concerned and two members of the Senate, one of whom has a knowledge of the relevant discipline or from a related discipline and the other from another Faculty.

According to the Circular No 723, Method of Recruitment for Associate Professor and Professor Associate Professor (All Faculties) Method of Recruitment By merit promotion. Qualifications A Senior Lecturer (Grade II/I) may be considered for promotion to the grade of Associate. Professor. if he/she has obtained at least the required minimum mark as specified in the Marking Scheme for the post.

Professor (All Faculties) Method of Recruitment By merit promotion Qualifications A Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor may be considered for promotion to the grade of Professor if he/she has obtained at least the required minimum mark as specified in the Marking Scheme.

Professor (All Faculties) Qualification Candidates should possess: (a) The minimum academic qualifications required for a post of Senior Lecturer (by open advertisement) in the relevant field of study as stipulated in posts 4 or 6 of UGC Circular No.721 (b) Ten (10) years of experience in teaching at university level/research/professional work after obtaining the relevant post-graduate qualifications for the post of Senior Lecturer. AND Obtain at least the minimum mark laid down in the Marking Scheme for Professor ship,(external candidates)
