Unfortunately, the so called smart HVAC
automation systems that are being installed to
control large commercial applications are not
so smart. And furthermore, they have probably
had an efect on you.
If you are one of the 70 to 110 or so million
people afected by the credit breach at Tar-
get, well than you can thank HVAC building
controls and their administrators. You see the
criminals where able to breach secure Target
servers through their HVAC control pro-
grams. Tere are not many systems available to
control large scale operations, and whats worse
is the default password and security are ofen
never secured.
Since the HVAC providers and service com-
panies typically need access to these computer
terminals they ofen have a default password
they use for remote or on site access. Individ-
uals much smart than myself, knew they could
use building control sofware to gain access
to sensitive materials. Such as access to every
credit/debit transaction made at Target loca-
tions like in this instance.
Tis scenario is not isolated to just Target
locations. For some time now hackers have
been able to see what programs companies
where using to control and access their HVAC
systems. Tey could then go out and purchase
this sofware or these programs on the open
market. Tis would give them access to default
passcodes and settings. Ones that administra-
tors of these systems for buildings where not
changing or updating. A system or program is
really only as secure as the end user makes it.
To make matters worse is the ease of this
information falling into the wrong hands and
being sold on the open market. Tere was a
worry for a time that this type of breach was
possible at the Pentagon. Yes the pentagons
HVAC controls where not properly secured.
Unrelated directly to HVAC, but important to
note here is that it was recently revealed the
default launch codes for this countries nukes,
was 00000000 for nearly 20 years.
Te take away here is the fact that our homes
and business are now on the grid more than
ever so to say. I can now open an app on my
phone and check/change the temperature at
home, or let in friends or loved ones if I am
not around. All of this connection is great
and can serve some really good purposes. My
favorite is the ability for HVAC equipment to
monitor its energy usage, as well as alert the
proper people when their is an emergency. We
can now attack problems head on or before
they become larger issues. Also, allowing us
more information about what is needed for
the repair, such as motors or electrical compo-
nents.
With all of this connection and great features,
we must understand there is a risk that may be
involved. If we are not securing our networks
form users, to permissions, to specifc sof-
ware, we are leaving the doors open to the
potential backlash. You need to be the NSA of
what your home wif or business networks are
talking to and what they are talking about. We
have to take the time to understand the poten-
tial risks our systems allow for and where we
can plug the holes. Good luck out there!

How to solve:
To solve a Sudoku, you only need logic
and patience. No math is required. Simply
make sure that each 3x3 square region
has a number between 1-9 with only one
occurrence of each number. Each column
and row of the large grid may only have
one instance of 1-9.

Ingredients:
15 guajillo chiles, stemmed and seeded
1/4 medium white onion, roughly chopped
(about 1 cup)
1 medium tomato, stemmed and halved
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
2 cloves garlic
Kosher salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
2 tablespoons vodka
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon Worcester-
shire sauce
Celery leaves for garnish
Celery sticks, tortilla or vegetables chips
for serving
Directions
Combine the chiles and onions in a medium
saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a
simmer and cook until the chiles are tender,
about 20 minutes. Drop the tomato in about
5 minutes before the chiles are done. Strain,
reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid. Put
the cooked vegetables, the reserved 1 cup of
cooking liquid, the vinegar, sugar, garlic and
1 teaspoon salt in a blender, and then puree
until very smooth.
Pour the chili-tomato mixture into a mesh
strainer set over a medium bowl. Use a rubber
spatula to help push the mixture through
until only the chili and tomato skins remain in
the strainer. Discard them.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium
heat. Add the strained chili-tomato mixture
and cook, stirring and scraping up the bottom
frequently, until thick, about 15 minutes.
Remove from the heat and stir in the horse-
radish, vodka, Worcestershire and some salt.
Refrigerate until chilled, at least 1 hour or
overnight. Garnish with celery leaves and a
swirl of horseradish. Serve with celery sticks
or chips.

I am starting to wonder at this point if my
back yard will be an ice rink forever. All the snow,
and rain, and melting, and freezing temperatures
has really hidden the grass for the time being. At
least it is starting to be lighter out when we get
up. Although I am told that all changes soon...
Anyways, all the cold and ice has given me
more time indoors with our new brother. As you
can see I enjoy when he reads me books after a
long day of work. Not sure what the book is about
or how the story goes, but doesnt stop me from
enjoying it.
What Frank and I are starting to learn now
is that a nap for us on the ground can turn into
a quick and silent awakening. Jack is scooting all
over the house now, and likes to grab a hold of
our tails for a good examination. No harm in this
greeting, however a little heads up he is coming
over would be nice.
As Jack continues to grow up right before
our very eyes, he has taken a good liking to us and
our few toys scattered about. No problem by me
as I would be happy to share if my parents let
me. They seem to think we all need separate toys
around the house. Oh well, more things they have
to keep track of.
Whelp, heres to Springs arrival, Frank and I
are impatiently waiting...

Dogs World: Quick note from Murphy
Wow, I have lived in Chicago all
my life and I do not remember a winter
colder than this one. Maybe its the
recency of it, or me being out in it more,
but it s about the coldest one I know
of. Sad too, because as I write this there
seems to be no relief in our immediate
future.
Te Olympics are in our rear
view mirror. With one pretty poor
performance from a certain Mens
Olympic team I care to forget about. Te
Womens team put up one hell of a fght,
but it kind of fell apart for them at the
end. Good to see them at least walk away
with a medal.
By the time you read this some

As an airhead, which is
actually a complement in our industry
niche, I am always happy to solve
comfort problems. When I get a nice
note about our solutions working i like
to pass it along. Tis note came from
Mrs. Hill, and we couldnt be more glad
we were able to help her.
We are reminded of your company
very ofen in the winter months. In
2009 you replaced our furnace. You
re-worked some of the ductwork
in the basement. I had concerns
about the changes in the duct work.
Tom made a special trip back and
explained every thing in detail. Afer
that I felt good about making the
changes.
What a diference it has made.
Our house has never been this
warm and lower heating bills. We
used to have small space heaters
in the kitchen and living room and
sometime even in the family room
because those room were always
cold. Now those rooms are warm
and no need for space heaters. No
other company had ever suggested
changing the duct work when we had
the previous furnace replaced.
We are extremely happy with
every thing and always put in a good
word for your company if we hear
of someone that needs heating or
air conditioning work. We referred
our son Patrick Hill recently whose
furnace went out during a cold spell.
He also was pleased with the service.
Tank you for making our home so
comfortable. - Mrs. Hill
