Start|ng off the year |nst|||ed a sense of nervousness and ant|c|pat|on w|th|n the students. Some

about surv|v|ng the frst day.
'The start of schoo| has been rea||y good for me, but defn|te|y rea||y busy. Sen|or year was k|nd
of a shock for me. l hadn`t taken the SAT or AOT unt|| th|s year, and l fe|t so beh|nd," sen|or Macay|a

|t`s the best fee||ng to wa|k |nto that c|ass and fee||ng comfortab|e w|th everyone |n there," Oo|eman

The fam|||ar|ty of schoo| had set |n. Students knew wh|ch ha||way was the |east crowded and
wh|ch teachers gave the most homework. However, certa|nty was far from the|r grasps. They d|dn`t
know what the|r f|na| grade wou|d be or |f the|r project wou|d get f|n|shed on t|me.
'l wasn`t expect|ng to be busy a|| the t|me. There |sn`t a n|ght that l`m not do|ng someth|ng," jun|or

n||ke Eubanks, sophomore Rebecca Bennett`s m|nd wasn`t on the present; |t was geared towards

She hoped her upcom|ng math c|ass wou|d be enjoyab|e but knew schoo| was surpr|s|ng. When

'l`ve come to rea||ze that everyth|ng happens for a reason, and w||| a|ways happen even |f you
try to stop them," sophomore Mart|e Rogers sa|d. She cont|nued, 'lt rea||y just mo|ds the person you
are go|ng to become, and he|ps you face ||fe head on |n the future." Students, ||ke Rogers, found h|gh
schoo|`s unexpected events |nev|tab|e. After a who|e semester had gone by, they rea||zed that they had
no power over whether or not someth|ng was go|ng to happen.
For sophomore M|chae|a Farg|e, the surpr|ses of schoo| came from the peop|e she encountered.
'You`re never sure what k|nd of peop|e you can meet, and how they can comp|ete|y change your ||fe,"
Farg|e sa|d. She cont|nued, 'l be||eve |t`s a|| comp|ete|y out of my hands."
So how was th|s unpred|ctab|||ty dea|t w|th? Accord|ng to sen|or Joseph vargas, the best way to
hand|e h|gh schoo| was to 'accept and overcome." For freshman Peyton Pruett, |t was to 'take |t as |t

When |t came down to |t, schoo| wasn`t s|mp|e. And w|th the unpred|ctab|||ty aspect added |n, |t
became even more comp|ex. Sen|ors had to worry about wh|ch co||eges they wou|d get accepted to
and AP students were cramm|ng for the|r upcom|ng exams. 'Whenever you th|nk the wor|d |s crash|ng
a|| you do |s dwe|| and focus on the bad. After |t`s sa|d and done w|th, you not|ce how good you
actua||y have |t and |t was just a |esson that had to be |earned," jun|or Kad| K|rk sa|d.
However, no matter what happened throughout the year, students cou|d f|nd a way to make
sense of |t a||. 'Now that most of |t`s over w|th, l rea||ze how much more l put myse|f out there th|s
year. l th|nk that`s why so much awesomeness has happened to me. l went past my comfort zone and
dec|ded to show more of the rea| me," jun|or Makay|a Orowder sa|d. Freshman Peter Fenton added,
'|ook|ng back on th|s year, l wou|d have to say l understand why a |ot of th|ngs happened. At f|rst,
you don`t th|nk they have a reason for happen|ng unt|| |ater on. Then you rea||ze they were e|ther for
the best or for no reason at a||."
Surpr|ses |a|d w|th|n the person s|tt|ng next to them or the c|assroom down the ha||. Th|ngs

everyth|ng became understandab|e.

Students who wa|ked through

the front doors of the schoo| |nto the
unknown soon became acqua|nted
w|th the crowded ha||ways, |oud be||s,
and he|pfu| staff. A|though st||| unsure
of the|r surround|ngs, they sett|ed |n
and worked from 7:45 |n the morn|ng
to 2:45 |n the afternoon. By then,
the students knew that th|ngs were
chaot|c. At any moment, someth|ng
unexpected cou|d happen. lt became
uncontro||ab|e. As the year came to
a c|ose, those unexpected events
became understandab|e. lt a|| f|na||y
made sense just as they were about to
ex|t the schoo| doors for the |ast t|me
dur|ng the 2011-2012 schoo| year
For sen|or Oo||een Echuck, the
end of the year meant |ook|ng back
at how much th|ngs had changed. 'l
th|nk l`ve been ab|e to f|gure out who
my rea| fr|ends are. lf l were to go
back a year and p|cture how my ||fe
wou|d be now then l wou|d p|cture |t
so d|fferent|y. The way th|ngs are now
|s so much better than what l had |n
my head," Echuck sa|d. On the other
hand, the end of the year for sen|or
Morgan Huber meant |ook|ng forward.
'l`m happy for the th|ngs that have
happened to me. They`ve he|ped me
f|nd myse|f and my true fr|ends and the
d|rect|on l`m headed," Huber sa|d.
H|gh schoo| was fu|| of

'We can be want|ng to cry one m|nute because the computer won`t work, then the next be fa|||ng on
the foor |augh|ng. lt`s what makes yearbook exc|t|ng, crazy and unpred|ctab|e," sophomore Add|son We|ch
sa|d. Th|s was the typ|ca| att|tude of a yearbook staff member. There was a|ways the |nev|tab|e stress from
an upcom|ng dead||ne but |t was a|ways ba|anced out w|th ce|ebratory cupcakes and a game or two of
n|nja.
M|nds may have started to go de||r|ous after the c|ock h|t m|dn|ght wh||e work|ng on a theme packet
at camp and stomachs may have started to grow| wh||e wa|t|ng on sp|nach and tomato p|zza on a must

the peop|e l work w|th to create an awesome yearbook w|th. To me, they are ||ke fam||y- a yerd fam||y!"
freshman O|aud|a Sant||||an sa|d.
For the fam||y of yerds, fn|sh|ng the book was the ma|n pr|or|ty. However, a good t|me was never out
of reach. 'My favor|te memory was from camp when l had to push a marshma||ow across the foor w|th
my nose," sen|or Sam Wentworth sa|d. They even made work|ng on the book fun. 'Jade wou|d pretend
||ke we were typ|ng our stor|es, but rea||y we were wr|t|ng each other about boys and stuff," jun|or Amanda
Mart|n sa|d.
When |t came down to |t, the theme ep|tom|zed the creat|on of the yearbook and those who had a
hand |n mak|ng |t. 'Th|s year for me has been craz||y c|ose to the theme of the book. My c|osest fr|ends are
peop|e l d|dn`t know ex|sted th|s t|me |ast year. l got put |n c|asses w|th no one l knew, l made new fr|ends,
tr|ed new th|ngs and ga|ned memor|es and exper|ences that l`|| never forget. l`m not the same person l was

From p|cture stea||ng wars and fgur|ng out how to trans|t|on between fy|ng on an a|rp|ane and a turt|e
|ay|ng eggs, to try|ng out yoga for the frst t|me, the yearbook staff worked through |t a|| to comp||e the

Students had the power to ignite their lives. Make a change. Take

Senior Jake Hafermalz earned a bowling scholarship to Campbellsville
University before most seniors had even started applying to colleges. He
was scouted at a national tournament.
Bowling to me essentially is confdence," Hafermalz said. You know
when the game is in your hands, and when you pull off that very close win,
there is no better feeling."
Like Hafermalz, junior Tara Orr was set on success.
l bought Kaplan study guides and spent at least four hours a day
studying to try to improve my SAT scores," Orr said. l know that l want to
be the best l can be and if l do something wrong l am only letting myself

Students didn't watch their school year pass by. They ignited their
ambitions inside of them. Their passions were awakened. Their inspirations
were in full force. The year was in their hands.

Outside of the classroom, beyond the brick walls of the
school, and past the pavement in the parking lot, students
found a life besides books and pencils. They explored their
interests, passed time with friends, and worked towards goals.
Freshman Hayden Roper!s passion lied in his six year
history with piano. I!ll practice for hours at a time and I!ll
practice longer before a recital, Roper said. When I practice,
I mess up. So when I play a piece perfectly live, I feel
amazing.
With a broader approach, sophomore Hannah McConnell
enjoyed many activities. When I!m with my friends, we enjoy
going fshing, mudding, or just meeting up to get a quick bite
to eat, McConnell said. The time I get to spend with my
friends and family, I cherish every minute.
The students! lives were busy, active, and energetic.
Events, hobbies, and people evoked feelings of excitement.

With each class came something newto learn. Students compared SAT
and ACT test scores in Ms. Cynthia Brookshire`s frst block AP Statistics
class and learned the foundations of painting in Mr. Gores third block art
class. With numerous course options, each student chose the path that
ignited their education.
For third block, frst and second semester, senior Abi Faille took
Chamber Singers and was also the group president. "It`s what I love doing,
and it`s something I`m good at. It`s like a break in the school day because I
actually enjoy it!" Faille said. "If there weren`t fne arts in the school I would
be so stressed all the time. It`s relaxing and enjoyable!"
Freshman Chance Rebes shared the same excitement for his P.E.
class with Coach Grady Turner. "You get to actually do stuff and not just sit
down," Rebes said. On the other hand, he wasn`t as fond of math. "Math is
terrible. It`s confusing because there`s hundreds of numbers," Rebes said.
With the broad range of classes to be taken, the information to be
learned and taught was unlimited.

Every Friday, 35 minutes during Focus were dedicated
to leadership, fundraising and community service. Students
gathered in the auditorium, commons area or various
classrooms for their organizational meetings. Each club held a
different purpose and taught various lessons.
HOSAmember junior Samantha Phelps found a way to help
others. "The members and offcers reach out to the community
through annual community service projects that help feed many
of the less fortunate in our country, Phelps said.
Senior Tony Ramirez, a member of Spanish National Honor
Society and Interact, discovered personal benefts. "Both clubs
have taught me that hard work and determination can take you
far, and you should always try your best in everything, Ramirez
said.
Whether the gain was external or internal, students acquired
valuable knowledge and understanding to take with them.

Despite the fact that there were so many people going in
every direction, students still found others to relate to. In what
could have been a stressful environment, surrounding one!s self
with supportive people was important.
As a member of the competition cheerleading team, junior
Courtney Curtis found inspiration in her teammates to work hard.
Seeing themwork so hard for the teamand seeing the teamwork
really inspires me to do more and be better for them, Curtis said.
Sophomore Mckenzie Hamby also found encouragement in
those around her. Through the help of my friends that are fellow
photographers, my hobby has really fourished," Hamby said.

Sports required strength. Determination. Sacrifce. It was
both physical and mental. Players and teams strived for the
highest score, the fastest time, or the most concentration. An
injury or a loss was merely an obstacle.
"It feels really awesome when you win your event," senior
track runner Jesse Gee said. Gee`s sights were set high. "I
have been running and working out since summer to try to
stay in shape and get my times down to go to state this year,"
Gee said.
Sophomore Sara Bywaletz, a member of the soccer and
cross country teams, also pushed herself to go the distance.
"I feel like it is more of a mental challenge than anything else
because you need to be able to put your full focus into the
game or race," Bywaletz said.
Sometimes a game came down to a few, simple seconds.
But whether or not a win or loss was gained, effort was always
there. Players laid it all out on the feld, court, mat, or course.

Before the year came to an end, one more season came to
pass. Spring, although initially cold, ushered in a time for warm
weather, new sports, and the ending of the year.
Junior Suzanne Eckert played varsity soccer. Soccer
means everything to me. It has made me who I am today. It has
taught me to stay strong when I feel weak and to fght through
all my battles, Eckert said. The season started out in the cold
and ended in the heat. I love the weather and seeing how the
season changes from the beginning to the end [of the season]
and being outside in it, Eckert said.
Sophomore Drew Garrison attended the JROTC Military
Ball which was also held in the spring. It was really fun. A lot of
people enjoyed it because it was really formal at the beginning
of it then later you get to relax and dance with your friends,
Garrison said.
The change of season brought an excitement for new
activities with the end of the year just around the corner.

Senior year was flled with college applications,
goodbye banquets, and looking toward the future.
Between the lines of SAT practice books and
scholarship essays laid life-long friendships and
fnal memories to be written in yearbooks.
For senior Makayla Crowder, her year was
flled with mixed emotions. "I can`t wait to get out
and experience the world, learn everything it has
to offer, make new memories, and make the step
to the next big part of my life. However, I`m going
to miss the security of a simple, small town high
school," Crowder said.
With these emotions came preparations for
life after high school. Senior Harley Vaughan made
sure his plans were in place. "I got a scholarship to
go play football at the University of West Georgia.
While doing so, I am going to get a degree of my
choice so I can pursue a career after college and
be successful," Vaughan said.
The "real world" was just around the corner.
No longer would the seniors walk through the high
school doors for a day of class. Their futures were
ignited and they were on their way.

The ability to ignite one!s life gave students the power

Sophomore Riley Westbrook sparked his enthusiasm
for tennis by playing for the varsity team. If I!m playing a

Brittany Horton also found a way to direct her interests
and dedication. I think each of these clubs help me show
passion because I want to do things that interest me. I
prove to myself that I can step it up and take on more
responsibility, Horton said.
Students, including Westbrook and Horton, made the
year their own. It was full of energy, passion, inspiration,
drive and an awakening. Their year was ignited.

Yearbook broke the boundaries of a
typical class. It didn!t involve multiple choice
tests or hour-long lectures. It defnitely didn`t
involve silence or individual work. Yearbook
was a class for collective knowledge, an
interweaving of different personalities, and
the pursuit of condensing 180 days of school
into one book through means of journalism.
The creation of the book required an
immense amount of dedication. Yearbook
is exhausting. Literally. But it!s so exhausting
because you learn so much, you work so
much, and you gain so much. And what
makes it so worth it is the fact that we are
all working hard for this book, this book that
holds so many memories. This book that
is history, Academics and Fine Arts Editor
junior Miranda Abe said.
Not only did the staff members learn how
to make a yearbook, but they also gained
an understanding to help them in other
experiences. Deadlines are terrible! I have
learned to start your deadline as soon as I get
my assignment. Do not procrastinate! staff
member freshman Allison Gilbert said.
During the process of compiling all of
the year!s memories together, the staff chose
a theme to describe it all. After months of
deliberation, Ignite was chosen. The theme
not only related to the year but to the staff as
a whole as well.
Staff member senior Cecilia Marcisova,
a foreign exchange student from Slovakia,
explained her experience in a new country
and on staff in one sentence. I had to be
Ignite.
This idea transcended through the whole
staff. Yearbook was having the courage to
talk to someone new. It was writing a story
on football even though the concept was
completely unfamiliar. It was putting oneself
out there to get the job done.
In the end, it all came down to one thing:
the 304-page yearbook. My favorite thing
about being on yearbook staff is knowing
that I!m part of something the whole school
depends on and looks up to, staff member
senior Amanda Martin said.

INTEREST STORY - GSPA
(as seen on page 5)
One day he was playing the flute; the next, he was starring in an award winning play. Then after that, he was
making plans to clone sea urchins, not to mention writing a score for Tri-M and drafting up a script for a feature-
length film. People couldve said all they wanted about Brandon DeBlois, but the evidence was there. DeBlois was
a hard-working, dream-chasing, anything but run-of-the-mill, sophomore.
I like to stay busy. I give myself ginormous challenges, DeBlois said.
This was nothing but proof of the jam-packed schedule DeBlois followed. If he wasnt rehearsing for a band
concert in Mr. Robinsons room, then you could find him in the auditorium reading lines for the One-Act play.
I dont like free time. I guess thats why Im in a million different clubs, DeBlois said.
When it came to the acting portion of his Renaissance man persona, it wasnt always rainbows and sprinkles.
He auditioned in middle school for the play, but was unfortunately turned down. However, high school was a
different story.
I was messing around with Gavin in the auditorium. We were reenacting a scene from Lord of the Rings. Then
Ms. Duff saw me and said she wanted me to lead for the play! DeBlois said.
In 8th grade, the band director, Mr. Land, saw that I was giving a lot of devotion to music all day, every day.
Six out of my seven classes, Id be either in the band room or the chorus room either helping out with the other
band classes or practicing a solo Mr. Land had given me in the chorus part. So I actually got to the large group
performance evaluation twice that year, DeBlois said.
Even with all of these activities cramming up his days, he managed to find time to start his own movie.
Im writing a movie for our AP World History class. Its about the epic of Gilgamesh. Im probably going to
finish it at the end of my senior year. This year Im going to be writing the script, over the summer Im going to get
private funding from companies, and then the next two years will be filming and editing. Were just doing it for fun
and hopefully we can make money from it. No one has ever made a movie about it before; Ill be the very first,
DeBlois said.
He continued on to mention that while he was writing his script for his movie, he was also writing a score for
Tri-M.
With plenty on his plate already, DeBlois never stopped thinking about the future.
After I finish the movie and score, Im going to start cloning things. After I clone sea urchins, Ill just move to
larger and larger organisms, DeBlois continued, For college, Im thinking medicine. I actually already interned at
Physicians Immediate Medical Care.
When asked to describe himself in two words, DeBlois sat and pondered for a few minutes before coming up
with what he thought described him the best. What words did he pick? Just me. Thats all he said, but quite
frankly, thats all that needed to be said. Brandon DeBlois was just... Brandon DeBlois.
