Physics Paper 2 F4 C1 Section A 1. a) Table 1 shows four physical quantities and their SI units. Complete the table.

Physical Type of SI unit quantities quantity Density Scalar kg m-3 Momentum Acceleration Electrical charge b) Diagram shows a micrometer screw gauge used by a student to measure 20 pieces of paper.

a) Name the measuring device. b) What is the accuracy of this device? c)i. Name the part X of this device. ii. State the function of part X of this device. d) If the device is used to measure a physical quantity in an electric circuit, how it is connected to the circuit. 4. Physical quantities are made up of base quantities and derived quantities. a) Based on above statement, define: i. Physical quantities. ii. Base quantities. iii. Derived quantities. b) Power, P can be defined as in the equation below.

i. What is the name of part X? ii. What is the function of part X? iii. Find the thickness of a piece of paper. 2. Diagram 1 shows a Vernier calipers is used to measure the thickness of a metal plate. Diagram 2 shows when the Vernier calipers is not in use and the calipers are close.

Based on equation, state all the: i. Base quantities. ii. Derived quantities. c) Derive the SI unit for power, P in (b). Section B 1. Diagram (a) and (b) show two types of measuring instruments in laboratory while not in taking measurement.

a) State the part X for the Vernier calipers and give one usage for part X. b) What is the actual thickness of the metal plate? c) If the thickness of a copper wire is needed to be measured, suggest a suitable measuring tool and state a reason for your choice. 3. Diagram shows a measuring device used in laboratory.

a)i. Name the physics situation shown for both of the instruments while not taking away measurement. ii. State the similarities and differences in characteristics of both instruments. b) If you are assigned to measure the diameter of a glass rod by using instrument (b), suggest how you can get an accurate measurement. c) By using a suitable material, describe how you would design a thermometer with high accuracy and sensitivity. Your description should include the structure and the scale on the thermometer.

2. Diagrams show two ammeters P and Q with different sensitivities.

a) What is meant by sensitivity of a measuring instrument? b) By referring to the readings of two ammeters, compare the sensitivity of their scales and relate the reading of the scales to their sensitivities. c) There is a structure X beneath the pointer of ammeters. Give the name of structure X and explain how the structure functions in the ammeters. d) In a school laboratory, you are assigned to determine a few measurements of the following hollow object accurately.

i. What is meant by an accurate measurement? ii. Using proper measurement instruments, explain how you would accurate measure the: Length of hollow object Thickness of hollow object Show all your steps in measurement and calculation involved.
