This seemingly mundane shot showed up in our inbox a while back. It looks like two guys loading appliances and whatnot onto a trailer towed by a truck. Then we showed it to a former City employee, and then some current City employees, and it got a lot less mundane. That looks like the airport truck, and That looks like a City Employee shirt on that one guy, and Isnt that Lennys old car in the driveway? were the statements given to the TXC, leading us to question whether or not Lenny the Airport Director might have used City employees and equipment to move some stuff for him. Hmm. Now that we think about it, it sure doesnt look like the airport in the background. We know that a few years back a City Director was busted for just this kind of thing, which, as far as were concerned, is theft from the taxpayer. But we dont want to jump to any conclusions. Anyway, wed love to know what you think the photo is actually of. Please send your caption to news@txcitizen.com, with the word Busted in the subject line.

3RD Annual

It appears that the highly respected Jan Kennadys influence with local Republicans has waned quite a bit, as her horse is out of the race to fill the Precinct Four Commissioners seat that she is retiring from in May. Jeanne Slupik, who was also backed by Sheriff Bob Holder, is done, taking only 28% of the vote, and its come down to a run-off between Jen Crownover (with 32%) and Dan Krueger (with 41%). 50%+ was required for a win. As the party machine was initially split between Crownover and Slupik, the post is still very much up grabs. Well see who backs whom in the final showdown.

Issue #2 Towing Contract Fiasco

As Nick Rogers reported in last weeks Due Process column, the case brought against the City by various towing companies involving potential violations of the State Open Meetings Act is to move forward, because the City lost its argument that the District Court lacks jurisdiction in the case. Of course, its moving forward to an appeal of that decision first, because thats how City Hall handles every case it knows its going to lose at trial. And why not? Taxpayer cash is unlimited, after all, and San Antonio lawyers needs to eats too. TXCITIZEN.COM

And we have a race for the District Five post on City Council, as the small business/tourism friendly Kelly Mochel will be taking on Ken Valentines longtime friend and advocate, the Kitchen Cabinets Wayne Peters. The District Five seat has been in the hands of Valentines river alcohol ban/container ban obsessed Cabinet for at least the past nine years, with Bryan Miranda on the dais for the last three, and Kathleen Krueger for the previous six. If youd like more of the same, Peters is your man. Oh yeah, and Amy Grant is playing at the Civic Center Thursday night. Heres a funny story: Grants Straight Ahead tour was the first big concert I ever attended. Universal Amphitheater, Los Angeles, 30 years ago. Gary Chapman. Michael W Smith. AROUND &ABOUT

The TX Citizen's own Chase Cochran took a 90 mile side-trip during his last visit to Key West, Florida, and came back with this review: "While most mainland camp accommodations are rather spartan, GB is lacking in both comfort and activities. No swimming, no horseback riding, and the photography program was cancelled years ago. One star."

on tour

A couple weeks back, the scout cubs of Den 4, Pack 119, visited TX Citizen headquarters for a riveting lecture on moral authority and the free press' obligation to the public. They got a Journalism patch out of the deal, and we got this sweet photo of the boys doing their best Mike Reynolds impression. Fine lads, all.

UNCLE ESEL
Dear Uncle Esel, Have you seen how the Herald has a new smart-alecky advice column? It was buried in a section that I would never look in but my 82 year-old grandmother mentioned it and said that it seemed kinda dumb to her. I read it and I thought it was weak. The writers name even rhymes with yours, which makes it seem even super dumber. Thanks, Sean
Dear Sean, I was also alerted by an 80-something year old about this column. I got my hands on a copy of the Houston-owned Herald-Zeitung right away and found the article. First, the authors name is (shockingly) made up, and the column doubles as a food review. It seems quite obvious that the advice part is a blatant rip-off of this Esels fine work, but there the similarity ends. Esel believes that the original Abigail Van Buren, a.k.a. Pauline Phillips, is turning in her grave in response to this amateurish attempt to emulate one of her devout followers, Uncle Esel. In her first advice post, the HZs Ethel der Klatsch (which translates to the Gossip) advises a woman in an 18-year relationship who obviously wants a wedding ring. Ethel recklessly tells her to dump him. Without any background about this couple, who might in fact have a relationship that is stronger than we imagine, and without knowing if there are kids involved, she urges the writer to destroy the relationship and quotes a song (Hit the Road Jack) written by Percy Mayfield and made popular by Ray Charles. Not lost on Uncle Esel is the fact that the song might be written from the point of view of a female gold digger who doesnt appreciate a down-on-his-luck man in her life during financially tough times. Uncle Esel suggests the writer of the original question (if she is reading this now) stop and evaluate her relationship, and make sure she has taken the time for serious discussion on the topic of marriage. Has she sought professional counseling with her man to see if there are psychological barriers that are keeping the question from being popped? Only after positive actions have been taken to resolve the impasse should drastic measures like ending an 18-year relationship be considered. As for Ethel, advice isnt your forte, so stick to food columns. Unlike a certain Scottish cocktail reviewer, make sure you actually sample the dishes you write about. Word gets around. Hmm, Esel does remember, way back in the day, a quick fling with a German gal named Ethel (before meeting Mrs. Esel). If thats you sweetheart, youll be happy to know that the doctor was able to clear up that thing. Love, K TXCITIZEN.COM

ADVICE FROM

Dear Uncle Esel, Im a married woman who writes for a living. Years back I attended a college in the Hill Country and I started out as a Physical Education major before switching. Oh, and by married, I mean married to a man. Anyway, all my teen and young adult years, I always wanted to do nothing but be a girls volleyball coach. I would often find games anywhere in the area and just go watch and pretend I was the coach for those wonderful young ladies. After some time, I realized that I might be obsessed with those players and I started to wonder if I was normal or not. Eventually I ended up switching my major because I had to quit going to games cold turkey. After all these years though, I find myself wondering daily if I shouldnt have pursued my dream to coach those fine young lady athletes in what I think is a most beautiful game. Those finely chiseled athletes and the things they can do with their bodies on the court are soothing and inspiring at the same time. Do you think maybe I should pursue my original dream? Is my fascination with these athletes typical for someone who wants to coach? I cant talk to my husband, because he long ago forbade me to even go to the games after a big fight. Thanks, Bella
Dear Bella, You have issues that are way beyond Uncle Esels reach. Its obvious you have conflicted feelings that probably extend beyond your choice of profession. You should consider a few things before going further and maybe seek professional help to figure out who you really are. While societys tolerance for alternative lifestyles has greatly increased, it remains inappropriate for a coach or teacher to have such strong emotions towards young athletes and it appears you are infatuated with them. Perhaps you should get help, stick to something youre good at and leave the young students in someone elses hands. Love, K

Dear Dear Wabette: Because thats the American way, chula. If theres one thing that new immigrants quickly learn after bus routes and how to get on welfare, its to hate Mexicans. It gets particularly heated with Latinos, though, because many of them want to assert their own ethnic identity in a country that, outside of Washington, D.C., Florida, and parts of the East Coast, is almost exclusively Mexican when it comes to Latinos. Then again, while I dont blame the boricua for wanting to let people know hes not Mexican but rather Puerto Rican, I must

Spiced Sweet Potato Cake with Salted Butermilk Caramel

The beauty of working in my kitchen all day is that friends and neighbors often pop by to chat, or sometimes come over with a case of local vegetables. Such was the case this week, as my next door neighbor and friend Joy brought me a big box of sweet potatoes. Many of the sweet potatoes were re-gifted and given to other friends to use, but I kept enough to make various recipes like this sweet, rich dessert:

1 cups mashed sweet potatoes (2 medium or 1 very large) 1 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup granulated sugar cup brown sugar, packed 2 tsp baking soda 1 tbls pumpkin spice 1 tsp ground ginger Pinch of salt 2 large eggs cup canola oil 1/3 cup buttermilk 1 tsp vanilla extract (Did you make your own homemade vanilla like Ive shown you? If not, e-mail me for the recipe.) Preheat oven to 350. Coat 9x5 baking pan with floured cooking spray or grease and flour; set aside. Peel sweet potatoes and chop into 1 inch size cubes. Place in steamer for about 15-17 minutes or until fork tender. Set aside to cool. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, spices, and salt; set aside. In another bowl, combine cooled sweet potatoes, eggs, oil, buttermilk, and vanilla. Then, stir in wet ingredients with dry ingredients and stir until completely incorporated. Pour batter into prepared baking pan and bake for 60-65 minutes or until top is domed, golden, and springy to the touch. Use a cake tester to see if the center comes out clean. Allow cake to cool and begin work on your Salted Buttermilk Caramel topping. cup buttermilk 1 cup granulated sugar cup brown sugar 1 stick of butter 2 tbls corn starch 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp vanilla extract Sea salt for sprinkling In a large pot, add first 6 ingredients and whisk together allowing the mixture to melt over medium heat. The mixture will foam up and rise. Reduce heat if necessary to prevent scorching. Once risen and bubbly, reduce heat to low for about 8-10 minutes. Continue to whisk constantly. As this process develops, caramel will form and the mixture will turn a golden brown. Add vanilla and the mixture will darken. Remove from heat and allow to thicken as it cools. While caramel still warm, but not hot, drizzle over your sweet potato cake and sprinkle top lightly with sea salt. You will find that this cake is sweet, spicy, creamy, and salty all in the same bite. This dessert goes especially well with Irish coffee or Kahla & coffee. Save any extra caramel as a dip for sliced apples or pour over ice cream. Enjoy! Until next time, Eat, Drink & Be Sherri!

I have referred to myself as a libertarian for years as a matter of shorthand to help issues. In truth, on most issues I am even more anti-authoritarian than most libertarians. the Taliban were decimated in Afghanistan, to replace the previous government in that only the most basic of terms and is likely to be overthrown the moment that the last U.S. Here, too, a libertarian approach would that libertarian principles would strengthen America economically. I have found that when I look at a topic long enough, I generally see market-based solutions that would offer greater freedom to all while still offering solutions to problems. In this respect, I there are many thorny issues that a country may face where the lack of a strong, centralized government can be a disadvantage. Current events have placed us in just such a situation. As opposed to a knee-jerk defense of my political view, I thought that todays column might be used for an honest examination of the shortfalls of that position. facilitated a more aggressive position from Iran and unrest in countries like Egypt and Syria. power vacuum left by Saddams deposal have and military power-grabs might need to be
