CHINESE AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEVEL 1 (CFL1)

Course Outline
This beginning level Chinese course is designed for young students aged from 5 to 11 of non-Mandarin speaking family. The course adopts the textbook Chinese Wonderland Volume I edited by Mandarin Language and Cultural Center and published by Taiwan Knowledge Bank. The book consists of twenty-one lessons grouped into seven units and covers topics of self-introduction, family, daily activities, pets, sports, hobbies, clothing, colors, food, school supply, and toys. The content includes dialogues, vocabulary, sentence structures, classroom registers, readings and culture notes. Students will learn to speak everyday conversations, learn fundamental sentence structures, understand basic classroom registers, read pieces of writing based on the vocabulary and sentence structures, and discover theme related Chinese culture to young learners interests.

Course Schedule
Sundays 2:00 to 3:30 pm

Course Objectives
The course is designed to learn all the twenty-one lessons in two sessions of thirty-one weeks, one and half hours per week. By the end of first session, students will be able to talk in simple sentences about three categories: 1. family members and relationships, names, and ages, 2. common pet animals by describing their parts of body, and what motions pet animals do, 3. hobbies, sports and leisure activities, speak and use 55 phrases and 40 sentence patterns, read 12 lessons with 30 60 word paragraphs, recognize or read 89 Chinese characters, listen to or understand 13 classroom registers,

learn about Chinese culture presented in family name and last name, addressing to siblings and grandparents, three generations living together, Winter Solstice Festival and Chinese Zodiac, also learn Chinese toys and painting, the symbolic meaning of fish, turtles, snakes and dragons in Chinese culture. By the end of second session, students will be able to talk in simple sentences about three categories: 1. clothing and colors by using basic expression, like or dislikes, 2. food, snack and drinks are tasteful or not tasteful, 3. school supplies, and express what to buy and have bought, speak and use 44 phrases and 32 sentence patterns, read 9 lessons with 40 70 word paragraphs, recognize or read 76 Chinese characters, learn about how silk was first discovered by Chinese, how text direction in ancient Chinese writing was different, the symbolic meaning of color red, apples and pandas, also learn about candies and sweets in Chinese New Year, the role of tea in Chinese daily life, ancient Chinese books written on bamboo rolls, how paper was first invented by Chinese, and the relation of ancient Chinese money and dumpling.

Each student will have the following material: A textbook and an audio CD - can be taken home for daily practices Workbook with an audio CD to work in class and at home A set of phrase flash cards for use in the class and at home (optional)
