Tutorial hydraulic circuit Question 1 a) What is the purpose of a regenerative circuit?

b) Why is the load carrying capacity of a regenerative cylinder small if its piston area is small? c) When the directional control valve in the system of Figure 1 returns to its center position, the cylinder rod moves in a given direction. Is this direction extension or retraction?

Figure 1: Drilling machine application. Question 2 a) Sketch pressure sequence valve. b) What is the purpose of pressure sequence valve? c) Complete the circuit diagram of Figure 2. The clamp cylinder is to extend first, and then the work cylinder extends by the action of a directional control valve (DCV). By further action of the DCV, the work cylinder retracts, and then the clamp cylinder retracts.

c) Assume load on both cylinders are same, re-draw Figure 4 and modify it so that both cylinders can extend and retract in synchronization.

Question 5 a) How many position does i) A spring offset valve have? ii) A spring centered valve have? b) Name all valves in Figure 5. c) What unique feature does the circuit of Figure 5 provide in the operation of the hydraulic cylinder?

Question 9 a) Name three ways in which directional control valves may be actuated? b) For the system shown in Figure 9, if the load in cylinder 1 is greater than the load on cylinder 2, how will the cylinders move when the DCV is shifted into the extending or retracting mode? Ignore friction coefficient, K factor and explain your answer. c) If cylinder 1 and cylinder 2 is identical, will the piston moves at the same speed? Explain your answer.
