Speed 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Every object that moves has speed. Objects that remain stationary do not have speed.

Speed shows how fast an object moves. Which object moves faster can be determined by comparing the distances traveled in agiven time by two moving objects . The object which moves faster travels a longer distance i a given time. The aeroplane is faster than the car because it travels a longer distance in one hour. Which object is faster can also be determined by comparing the time taken by the moving objects to travel a given distance. An object which moves faster takes a shorter time to travel in a given distance.

Calculation of speed. 1. Speed is a measurement of how fast an object travels. 2. The speed of an object can be calculated if we know the distance it has traveled and the time taken to travel the distance. 3. The formula to calculate the speed of an object is as follows. Speed = Distance / Time 4. The unit of speed can be written as follows:a) kilometres per hour (km/h) b) metres per second (m/s) c) centimetres per second (cm/s) 5. The unit of speed of vehicles is usually given as kilometres per hour (km/h). Examples of calculation of speed are : a) A lorry takes three hours to reach a destination 270 km away. What is its speed ? Speed = Distance / Time = 270 km/ 3 hours = 90 km/h b) A boy takes 20 seconds to run a distance of 100 metres. What is his speed. Speed = Distance / Time = 100 m/ 20 s = 5 m/s
