This study tried to determine the level of awareness on environmental issues of

Ateneo de Naga College seniors categorized according to courses, the students'
sources of information on these environmental issues and whether or not the level of
awareness on environmental issues depended on the students' academic course or
other sources of information.
A questionnaire was prepared and given to sixty-six (66) college seniors chosen at
random from the official list of candidates for graduation prepared by the College
Registrar's Office for the School Year 1994-95. The students' responded statements on
the four (4) areas of environmental education such as conservation of forests, soil, water
and human resources.
The descriptive-normative survey method was used to determine the level of
awareness on environmental issues. The statistical tool was Chi Square to determine
the relationship between the respondents' level of awareness and their sources of
information.
This study sought to verify to the following hypotheses: that there is a significant
dependence in the level of environmental awareness of the Ateneo de Naga College
seniors on their academic courses and that the level of awareness of the College
Seniors on environmental issues depended on their sources of information.
Findings
1. Twenty-four (24) of the sixty-six (66) respondents, or 36.36%, were moderately
aware of the environmental situation; sixteen (16) or 48.48% were under the science
category while eight (8) or 24.25% were in the non-science category. There were
twenty-four (24) respondents, or 63.63 % who were not aware, seventeen (17) or
51.52% were under the science category and twenty-five (25) or75.76% belonged to the
non-science category.
2. One (1) respondent or 1.5% attributed his environmental awareness on the
curriculum only; seven (7) or 10.6% got their information from the media alone; fifty-eight
(58) or87 % got informed through a combination of the two aforementioned sources.
3. Awareness of environmental issues of the Ateneo de Naga seniors did not depend
on student' course.
4. The level of awareness of the Ateneo de Naga seniors on environmental issues
depended on the various sources of information. Fifty-eight (58) or 87.9% attributed
their awareness on both the school curriculum and the media. Eight (8) or 12.1% chose
either the curriculum only or the media only as their sources of information.

Conclusions
1. The students of the science category courses were more aware than the students
of the non-science category courses.
2. Majority of the respondents attributed their awareness on environmental issues to
curricular activities and the media.
3. The level of awareness on environmental issues of the respondents did not
depend on their academic courses
4. The level of environmental awareness of Ateneo de Naga College seniors
depended on their sources of information, both and non-academic (media).

Recommendations
1. There should be integration of environmental issues in science-related subjects.
2. More utilization of multi-media technology inside the classroom is encouraged.
3. There should be a massive campaign on environmental awareness inside the
Campus
4. Environmental education information dissemination activities should be
included in the annual planning of school activities.
5. There should be one environmental science subject which will focus on the
After-effects of our daily practices in the environment.
6. In curriculum integration, practical application of highly theoretical ideas should
be discussed extensively and there should be more exposure trips.
7. Further studies may be done on the causes of awareness of the environmental
issues, with due emphasis on their effects on the students attitude towards their
surrounding.
