SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LOWER CLASS OF THE UNITED STATES AND POOR CLASSES IN COLOMBIA

Poverty is a common reality and social phenomenon that share many countries in the world. Colombia and the United States are not the exception. In Colombia and the United States many people suffer of the oppression of a hierarchical society where the privileges increase or decrease according with your position in the social pyramid. Fourteen millions of people in Colombia are poor according to socioeconomic standards. 1 In the United States near of forty six million of population were poor in 2011.2 Lower class is associated with poverty in the United States and is one of the three major class of American society: upper class, middle class and lower class are those. The classification of social classes in Colombia is different. In Colombia the society is divided in six economic strata. These divisions affected your style of life, income, job opportunities and level of education. Strata classification determined many of the social relationships and opportunities that you have in your life, the household in that you born determine, in many cases, your success and your style of life.3 On other hand, the focus of this essay is contrasting the same and different characteristics that permit associate the lower class of the United States with the poor classes in Colombia.

In Colombia you ascend in the pyramid of social system according to the strata. Strata one, two and three are the poor, although these mix the lower and working class of American social system; four and five strata are the middle and high-middle class, respectively. Finally, six strata are the rich or the upper class. The poor people in Colombia

Lower class is associated with services employees, low-level manual laborers, and the unemployed. Many people have not higher education Lower class households can be below of the line of poverty, also lower class is the people most vulnerable in the economic system of the United Sates 4

The lower class is composed for the people with the more low education, low status job and low income in the society, many people receive public assistance.4
