Methods- Data Collection

1. Legibility
I. 5 letters/digits per line II. Read from top to bottom from 20 feet III. Variables: 1.Content Type
Content Type 3 LCD(Solid Lowercase Capital ) letters Letters Dots 7 Segs Lowercase Capital letters Letters Lowercase Capital letters Letters Digits Digits Digits

3 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

2. Effortless to read, post hoc question

After Pps completed the legibility test, they were asked:

At which line you are still able to read effortlessly and comfortably at a glance?

4 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

3. Preference, post hoc question

In terms of legibility/readability, which one you prefer best? And least

5 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

Legibility- Capital Letters

Note: 1. Shorter bar represents better Legibility 2. Dotted line- Average across groups

6 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

Legibility- Lower Case Letters

Note: 1. Shorter bar represents better Legibility. 2. Dotted line- Average across groups

Summary of Legibility Part

For Numbers: Dots is least legible. Interpretations:
The current dots requires 13% larger size to achieve equivalent legibility of 7 segs. Or 7 segs can provide 3 feet more visible range (for people with 20/20 vision)
13 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

Summery of Legibility Part - Comfort to Read

For lower case letters, 7 segments is least legible at a glance Interpretation: To be seen at a glance(effortlessly), 7 seg has to be 10% larger than Dots and 12% larger than LCD.

14 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

Summer of Legibility Part -Comfort to Read

For Numbers, Dots display is least legible at a glance Interpretation: To be seen at a glance(effortlessly), Dots display has to be 14% larger than 7 segs and 8% larger than LCD.

15 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

Observed Issues
Dots display is highly discrete, therefore: Better legibility if viewed further away because of bleeding effect. Simply increase the size of Dots degrades legibility up close.

Subjects Comments
No Continuity Hard to decipher Hard to connect dots Dots Mess with your eyes Dots are not acceptable, irritates me, not easy to read Dots are hard to read Distracted, concern about dot reliability Wouldnt want it, eyes strained Dots are painful (to read)

Comprehension Test
Research Question: 1. Can users correctly interpret the lighting in the Dot Matrix? 2. Does it improve users awareness of oven states?

18 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

Procedures:
Training Session: 1. Video clips of how to start a timer 2. Pps report what system status is and how they know it Must report all the identifiers
If not, watch video again (3 times at maximum) Then, Assisted learning

Procedures
Comprehension Testing Session: 3 Static images showing:
1. Bake 350 2. Bake 350+ Cook 45 Min 3. Bake 350+ Cook 45 Min (Hidden) + Delay Start 3:00 (Showed)

Q: What is the current system state?

Performance in training session:

-7 seg vs. Dots How many training sessions were needed?

22 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

50% Pass in 1st Training

12.5% Pass in 2nd Training

Comprehension - Bake 350

Dots: 100% accurate

7 Seg: 100% accurate

25 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

Comprehension Bake 350, Cook Time

Dots: 89% accurate (8/9)
Error: Thought 30 mins was timer than cook time

7 Seg: 100% accurate

26 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

Comprehension- Bake, Cook Time, Delay Start

Dots: 83% accurate
interpreted as delay for 3:00 rather than time of day *2

7 Seg: 75% accurate

interpreted as delay for 3:00 rather than time of day * 4

no reliable difference, P=.381

27 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

Conclusion
7 segments display is more legible in displaying numbers 7 segments is not suitable for lower case text DOT was least preferred in subjective legibility

28 GE Title or job number 3/11/2014

Conclusion- Contd
Assistance is needed to understand the meaning of lighting Perception vs. Interpretation? No reliable difference in system state awareness
