Water Resources Engineering KNS 4193 Project 1 [20 marks] February 2014.

Your group has to carry out an assessment study of an element out of 16 elements that we should consider in water resources development plan. You have to look for a river basin that has the chosen element in its river basin planning (or development). In this case, you can select a river basin from Sarawak State, or from other state in Malaysia, or from other country. The particular aspects that you have to take into considerations are amongst others: The important of the chosen element for its river basin development; The contribution of developing the selected river basin to the state or the country (short term and long term goals); The other water resources development elements in the selected river basin, in term of: o Sustainability of the river basin development, and o Integrated Water Resources Management; and Further study that should be carried out. The assessment is based on hydrological data available, existing water resources or river basin studies, resource persons, and the groups observation. Please select your element of water resources development from the list below, and write a report within 15 20 pages (Including pictures, tables, and with minimum 4500 words). ELEMENTS OF WATER RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT 1. Flood Control 2. Irrigation 3. Hydro-electric 4. Navigation 5. Domestic and Industrial Water Supply 6. Watershed Management 7. Recreational Use of Water 8. Aquaculture and Wildlife 9. Pollution Abatement 10. Weed and Insect Control 11. Drainage 12. Sediment Control 13. Salinity Control 14. Drought Control 15. Groundwater Development 16. Multipurpose Project

Outline of the Assignment Report (15-20 pages): Introduction River basin physical characteristics, socio-economic condition, problems and main development objectives (short and long term); and state of the art of chosen water resources element (refer to at least 2 journal articles) 1. Hydrological Condition Hydrological stations, rainfall, river flow, and groundwater conditions 2. Existing Planning and Development Schemes The importance of chosen element of water resources development, as well as the other elements; results of assessment study from the existing water resources projects or planning; 3. Potential Development schemes The results of interviewing resource persons; assessments results from existing planning reports; and results from the groups analysis. 4. Water Resources Development Plan and Management Practices Result of interviewing resource persons, assessment of existing study reports, and from the group observations. Conclusion and Recommendation
