PERSONAL STATEMENT

I want to do my Master Degree in Herriot-Watt simply because I believe it is primordial for my progress in studying civil engineering. For the time being Im attending the 3rd year of studies in civil engineering at the University of Plymouth in the UK. I believe that a Master from your University will be of a great help for me during my future professional life. In fact, a Master in Herriot-Watt is considered among the most important for a civil engineer. A master's in structural engineering has everything I am looking for. With this degree, I am considering working for certain construction companies focusing on retrofit and replace deteriorating infrastructure, and even though it is formed as a long term objective I am considering having a PhD on that subject as behaviour of structures has always intrigued me. Why do I want to study structural engineering? The answer is simple: opportunities. Two areas of interest to me within structural engineering are retrofitting of existing buildings and toughening mechanisms. There are many admirable buildings standing proudly for more than 70 years, but to the majority time has not been as gentle. Further study in issues varying from fatigue and creep of materials such as concrete and other related weaknesses, is essential to confidently tackle associated future situations. Additionally deeper understanding of structures themselves will allow engineers of my generation to have a smoother transition to a green future where buildings will exist in harmony to the environment and not at the expense of it. Another area I find rather intriguing is computational methods and mathematical modelling. My mathematics courses included work in computer programming (Lusas Modeller), number theory, abstract algebra, analysis, and linear algebra. I am interested in how linear algebra along with differential equations and computer programming can be employed to optimize the design process while simultaneously maximizing structural integrity. As I went through the Programme Description I could not overlook seismic resistant design. Considering that the dissertation on my last year of studies was on seismic resistant structures in a third world country (Indonesia), i am extremely keen to expand my knowledge on seismic resistant design. Another reason is because in most of the countries (including Greece) earthquakes should be considered when designing a building and apart from dissertation my studies did not include any earthquake related module. I am well prepared to begin structural engineering studies. My courses in mathematics afford me the ability to think analytically and logically; breaking down the main issue to subproblems and tackle each one separately. Once admitted to the postgraduate program in

structural engineering, I will avail myself of the opportunity. I look forward to entering the civil engineering department in the fall of 2012. My willingness to work can only overcome my interest to the subject.
