Your points don’t match ‘So what?" says textile artist Malka Dubrawsky from her home and studio in Austin, With ew rules, simple tool, anda fearless attitude, Malka’s deliberate imperfection has produced a line of bold new fabrics, quilt patterns, and piecing methods that capture modern sensibilities. “My fabrics feel more like graphic prints,” Malka says. With their daring dots, wonky wavy lines, and jumbo. scale, her arty designs are anything but traditional. ‘They're loosely considered to be batiks, but Malka will tell you her fabrics are different from batiks because of her printmaking knowledge. “No one else has updated the wax-resist method for contemporary sewers,” Malka says. She creates complex layers of pattern by applying color to and removing it from her fabrics using an assortment of hand-dyeing techniques (see “Are You Dyeing to Try It?” on page 20). The results are accomplished using simple tools, including calligraphy brushes and stamps formed 18 AMERICAN PATCHWORK QUIETING [AUGUST 2012 BELOW:Malka contemporized itajime [ituh-ZHEE-may shibor, a technique for dyeing cloth that sandwich fabric between twa blocks af wood. Malka used plexiglass and C-clamps toremove and insert color in these Circular settings from common objects, such as carrots, potatoes, and cardboard tubes. ‘The quilts that evolve from Malka's fabrics capture an equally liberating style, Random strips—often cut without a ruler—come together in Log Cabins. Colors appear in unlikely combinations. And traditional quilt patterns, magnified tenfold, make piecing a veritable piece of cake. Larger, simpler squares—and fewer rules for assembling them—appeal to people who have little time, yet seek the satisfaction of making something themselves. As the daughter of a physician father and Ph.D. scientist mother, Malka did not expect to become an artist, much less a fabric designer. She was born in Tel Aviv, moved to Houston when she was 9 years old, and took art in eighth grade only to escape PE. class. However, in the late 1980s, on a visit to New York City, Malka was inspired by an Ed Rossbach exhibit at the American Craft Museum. Instead, she bought a garage-sale sevin machine and introduced herself to fabric. She hi made only one traditional quilt: a diamond pattern in triangle-squares that took her more than two years to complete, It was when she got involved in a fiber arts group that her interests turned to dyeing fabrics. “The process reminded me of printmaking,” Malka says. “I could layer techniques to make unique images” At the same time, the improvisational quilts of Gee's Bend (and other not- at Austin, so-publicized quilting communities) were making their way into the American mainstream. Malka discovered books that evolved from the movernent, such as Whold @ ‘Thought It? by Eli Leon and Signs and Symbols by Maude Southwell Wahiman. Reading the books gave Malka the idea that perfection is not the goal, "If something doesn't work, it's no big deal,” she says. Six months later, she opened an Etsy store. Attention from a publisher led to her first book, Color Your Cloth: A Quilters Guide to Dyeing and Patterning Febric (Lark Books; 2009), which expounds on her wax- resist techniques. As her online presence grew, so did demand for Malka’s designs, landing her work in several arts and crafts magazines. The exposure led to her second quilt design book, Fresh Quilting: Fearless Color, Design & Inspiration (Interweave Press; 2010), “Thad fun and free reign to come up with anything, she says, The book of 21 modem projects captured Malka’s free-form style, as well as the interests of Moda Fabrics, for whom she is now designing, Now that her daughters—Sarah, 20; Rachael, 17; and Abigail, 14—are nearly grovrn, Malka is looking, ahead to the time when she can sell their four- bedroom house and purchase a new residence where she can have a dedicated place (besides the garage) for dyeing fabric. She also hopes someday to drive a vibrant online resource that speaks to contemporary sewers and crafters. In addition to practicing yoga and training for her next half marathon, Malka wants to continue teaching, knitting, writing books, designing fabrics, and living by her hometown's, motto: "Keep Austin weird” For more about Malka Dubrawsky, visit stitchindye.com or stitchindye blogspot.com.
