Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from

it to the full product?

The mast head has changed since my preliminary task as it takes up more of the top third and also has a slightly different layout in comparison as it is set in the top left corner. It is also different in colour and font as I thought this would enable the masthead to stand out a lot more on the page.

I included another image on the cover of my main task whereas there was not one present on the preliminary. This is a main convention of professional magazines so I feel this was a major progression through my transition.

I havent included a footer in my main task which could have been a good element to include, however I feel my main magazine still looks better overall.

The coverlines of my front cover are much more visible in my main task in comparison to the preliminary task. Due to the fact I have a dark background; it was easier to use a white font and the stroke effect in order to achieve this. There are also more coverlines on the cover which means that it gives more information for what is within the magazine.

The title of my contents page is much more improved in the main task as it has added effects and contrasting colours which make it appear clearer on the page. The dateline and issue number is placed in a more discrete place and blends in the page more, which I think looks much more professional compared to the preliminary task.

The layout and general look of the images are placed in a much more relevant and professional manner. They are also taken more professionally compared to the preliminary as the images used in the preliminary dont look as good.

The subheadings on the contents page are also much more aesthetically pleasing to the eye as they are a simplistic, black font that still stands out, whereas the preliminary has green, childish looking font that would not appeal to my target audience at all. Also, generally there is more content on the contents page and more information about what will be in the magazine as my preliminary is very basic and there is very little information.

I have included an editors note on the main magazine which I felt was a necessary part to include. The editors note makes the magazine feel more personal and helps the audience feel interactive and as if they are being included in the making of the magazine.

I learnt a lot more about developing a double page spread. I learnt that a lot of writing is necessary in the article, therefore I reduced the space between characters and lines to make more room for writing which I didnt know how to do before.

I chose the style of putting a main image across a whole A4 page of the double page spread as this is a common convention and I felt that it looked different and would interest the readers much more than two whole pages of writing.

As this was the first double page spread I have ever created, I made sure I took into account all of the aspects that are included in a popular magazine, and I took my time progressing through it.

I added a border effect at the top of the page to make the magazine look more interesting as it is rare to have a completely plain, white background on a double page spread. I also enlarged the letter E to make it look more visually pleasing and to make it stand out on the page so the audience are more enticed.
