THE FIRST WORD

// UPDATE
that call and began my journey into ministry, unsure of the outcome, but trusting God that He had a plan. In May of 2013, I accepted a call to a Pastorate at Turning Point Christian Church in Salem. As this ministry has grown, I have been giving an increasing amount of my attention to it. Because of this, I am no longer able to fulfill my role as a Shepherd at First Capital. I want to say a sincere heartfelt thank you - to you, First Capital, for the trust you have placed in me, for the investment into Gods kingdom that you made in me and for the love you have shown my family. Audre and I have been blessed and our children privileged that so many of you have invested into us. We can never thank you enough. First Capital is like a City Set on a Hill providing a great light. It is our hope to bring that same light to Salem. First Capital will always hold a very special place in our hearts. Thank you again for the trust you placed in me to serve this congregation. It has been a great privilege and honor that has helped to shape me for His purpose. In sincere Christian Love, Dan Garland While we miss Dans contributions here, we cant help but rejoice for Turning Point; they have one of our best! One of the bittersweet pieces of ministry is when those who have grown in Christ within our midst are taken to serve elsewhere. Josh Lees left us in January to preach in Patrick Springs, Virginia. John Roberts is ministering with South Fork in Palmyra. Im glad we are a church that isnt stingy! We wish all of you the very best as you serve. May the Kingdom of God grow from your efforts and skills! Go God!

Welcome Michael Crider! Michael joins the staff to lead our Student Ministry beginning the first weekend in March. For those not familiar with our language, Student Ministry consists of students in the 6th-12th grades. Michael will hit the ground running, accompanying 10 of our teens and 6 other adults on a mission trip to Mexico to build a house! Hows that for jumping in! Michael, his wife, Annie, and their two boys, Bentley and Bowen, come to us from a ministry in Woodlawn, Illinois. Michael is a graduate of Ozark Christian College and comes with a high recommendation from Dru Ashwell. (Dru preached for First Capital from 1991-95 and he now serves on the faculty at Ozark.) We are excited to have Michael join forces with us, but as we add Michael to our staff, our shepherds have lost two valuable pieces. As most of you know, Al Rudolph passed from life here to live forever in the presence of our Lord. His contribution to our leadership team cannot be replaced. He served as a model, a mentor, a leader of leaders, a prayer warriorthe list could go on for quite a while. Mostly we lost a dear friend, and below, is a letter to inform you that another of our shepherds has stepped away from his responsibilities here. Dear First Capital Christian Church Family, More than seven years ago you entrusted me to serve FCCC as a Shepherd. In that capacity I have been blessed to work alongside one of the most dedicated and devoted leadership teams imaginable. I have learned and grown because of this trust more than I can express here with words. It was through ministering here that I felt the call. I surrendered to

// CONNECTION
There are two events that are coming up on our calendar that I would like to talk about and encourage you to pencil in. Both events reflect a great deal of how we reach out and who we serve at First Capital. Red Cross Damage Assessment Training (Saturday, March 1, 9:30 AM 2 PM It was two Marches ago on a blustery Friday that our area was in harms way of a really nasty storm system. We remember what happened in Henryville and Marysville: schools, homes, and businesses turned into rubble in the tornados wake. We can also remember wanting to do something anything to help those who had suffered loss. But, like most, we were ill-prepared to be able to make much of a difference. A vision we have for our Body of Christ at First Capital is to be effective in causes that others in our communityeven the unchurched in our community--would feel are worthy in partnering with us. One of these causes, we have identified, is disaster relief. In order to be effective at disaster relief, it is necessary to be both available AND trained. This is why we have invited the American Red Cross to come to First Capital and offer training in damage assessment. When disaster strikes, one of the first things that must happen in order for a community to receive the immediate and long-term help it needs is for the extent of damage to be determined. Damage assessment teams walk neighborhoods and report house-by-house what damage can be observed from the street. This is an essential element

ADULT MINISTRIES

of near-term disaster recovery. Just imagine what we could do to help a community if we have a trained and knowledgeable team ready to report when called to do what we have been trained to do! I hope you will join us for this FREE training, and consider being ready the next time disaster strikes our area. You will receive a certification card from the Red Cross for completing this FREE training. It will take place in room 105 on Saturday, March 1. Feel free to contact me if you have questions. Good Friday Movie Presentation: The Passion of the Christ (Life Center, Friday, April 18, 7 PM) Few movies stir the kind of deep-seeded emotion that this epic movie does. Actor-turned-director Mel Gibson turned Hollywood on its ear when he released this movie more than a decade ago. I have always held that, in order for us to be able to celebrate the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday, we need to walk with him through the pain of his sacrifice on Good Friday. What better way to be reminded than by watching on Good Friday evening one of the greatest portrayals of what our Lord endured for us? Please join us for this FREE screening to understand just what Jesus sacrifice for us really means. Due to its graphic nature, children are not encouraged to watch this film. We will be providing childcare and activities for these age groups.

CHILDRENS MINISTRY // A NOTE FROM THE CHILDRENS MINISTER

Thinking of you, As I am writing this and looking to what is coming up, it is Valentines Day. By the time you get this, it will be long gone, but I just want to share with you the love that I feel from everyone here. It is amazing. God is so great and His people at this church are so loving and kind. We have gone through a major busy period for the childrens ministry. The Camp-In was amazing, and Daddy-Daughter Date Night went off well also. I believe my wife was wondering who I was over the last couple of months. She is an amazing woman; she has to be to take care of me. Haha. Anyway, I am looking forward to what we have coming our way. This is going to be a great couple of months of teaching. Sprouts will be talking about His-story in March and learning about Jesus and all the things He did when He was just beginning His ministry. Not only that, but they will also be talking about the people He called to go with Him. It should be an amazing journey. Then, in the month of April, our preschool friends will be discussing Easter and the time leading up to it. It should be a great month of discovery for them all. Upstreet will be looking at Control+Alt+Delete and how to reset your life and renew who we are in Christ. This month is all about forgiveness. We will be having our baptism class the first week and then dive into the amazing stories of forgiveness. In April we will be talking about Humility. They will

learn that Humility is putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve. This is what Jesus did when He was here on this earth, so we will attempt to learn to be more Christ-like during this time. I also want to take time to thank Rebekah and Charity Carkuff for their hard work upstairs painting. Upstreet is beginning to take shape and look amazing. If you have not seen the wall yet, go on upstairs and take a look, you will be amazed. It is such a wonderful thing to have talented people willing to do something for the church. Speaking of doing something for the church, we have some workers who need your help with Upstreet. Everyone is doing a great job, but we need more people helping so our workers dont get burned out. Please take the time to come upstairs or in the Sprouts area, to work alongside those who are already giving their time to the Lord. God will bless you. I promise it is a lot easier to work with children than any other area in the church, or so I think it is. Anyway, looking forward to Easter and celebrating the resurrection with you all. Please let me know of upcoming games this season. I always enjoy going to our kids games. It is fun to see them within as well as without. May God bless you all, Jesse

EVENTS

CASAS POR CRISTOS MISSION

MARCH 21-30, 2014
In just one week, teams transform an otherwise empty lot into a safe and secure home - complete with cement foundation, electricity, windows and doors. As a result of this experience, each family receives a tangible symbol of the faithfulness and unconditional love of Jesus Christ.

// A NOTE FROM THE YOUTH MINISTER

Our family is very excited about joining the First Capital Christian Church family! Over the past decade, Annie and I have experienced church in a variety of ways. A little more than ten years ago, we were in High School ourselves, doing many of the fun and exciting things that the students at Quest are doing now. While Annie made her decision to follow Christ before her Junior High years, it was in High School that I made that very same decision. I know and understand that the world our students are living in today can be tough to navigate, but having gone through those turbulent waters myself, I am prepared to guide the way to safety. After High School, I attended Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Missouri. This is the place where I first met Annie and where my passion for ministry took shape. During our years in college, we would serve in multiple volunteer roles at our home church and our first student ministry position. After graduation, we took on two new roles: one as a full time Associate Minister and the other as parents. In 2008, we were blessed with our son Bentley. After several years, we decided to step out of what had grown comfortable and took a leap of faith. That journey eventually landed us in southern Illinois to serve as a Connections Minister. It was while we were there that we added yet another son to the family. Bowen was born in 2011. We are most excited about what lies next for our family. The next chapter for us will be written with you all. I look forward to living out the many stories alongside you that will fill this chapter. The Quest Student Ministry is amazing and I believe its best days are still ahead. So for myself and Annie, whether its being students, leading students, or raising students of our own, we have done it. Now we are privileged to be with your students.

WORSHIP MINISTRY

// A NOTE FROM THE WORSHIP MINISTER

Well, my first month or so here at FCCC has been an exciting one! We have redesigned the stage twice and have started to mold our sound. Personally, I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone and meeting so many new people. The worship ministry has many exciting pieces that are forming. Our first ever Encounter was an unbelievable success. While I prepared for about 80 people to show up, we packed the house! That is definitely a good problem to have. I plan on having Encounter once a month and look forward to changing up themes and providing the best worship experience that I know how to provide. We have also started an online video channel in

which you can watch various aspects of the weekend services. Because of this, we were chosen to be on the home page of a worship website called www.worshipsetideas.com. Very exciting! I plan on adding a couple more spots to our tech crew. We will need volunteers for a stage manager position and a video switcher position. Both are easy jobs with no prior experience required. If you are looking for a way to get involved, these jobs are perfect for you. If anyone is interested in joining the worship team, tech team, or anything else I can help him or her with, I would love to talk with you. Come say hi! -Tyler

some wild game dishes and a special music set performance by our very own Tyler Sansom. Outdoors Ministry upcoming events include a turkey seminar, featuring Chris Creed on March 8th from 9am-12pm. Outdoor Expo will be in July. Look for updates on the First Capital Christian Outdoors Facebook page. Even though I am not a hunter, I have thoroughly enjoyed all the Outdoors Ministry events. They always include a spiritual message that can be applied to everyday life. Looking further ahead, our Biker Weekend will be June 29th & 30th and will include a run after 2nd service on Sunday. Please invite anyone you know who would be interested. We will again host Fun in the Son at the Corydon pool this summer on Wednesday nights, which will lead into our regular Wednesday night programming during the school year. And as usual, I invite any ideas for other ways we can reach the 30,000. Id love to hear from you. Thanks & God Bless, Bill Hollingsworth

So, is anyone else sick of winter? Here I am writing this after looking at ice for a week and a half. Hopefully warmer weather will accompany our upcoming events. Our 10th (can you believe it?) Joy Prom will be Derby Eve, May 2nd. Please mark this on your calendar - this is an amazing evening for over 200 guests, where we present a formal prom for special needs adults and teens. We can use as many volunteers as we can get and I can promise you this is an event where the workers are as blessed as the guests. Our volunteers need to be teenage or older. Jobs range from escorts (the primary area in which the teens serve) to table captains, hair and makeup, food, setup and cleanup, and several other areas. Look for sign up sheets at the Re:Source Center toward the end of March. We had a great turnout for the first outreach event of the year, the Outdoors Ministrys 2nd Annual Kill It & Grill It. Our speakers, James and Chad Hampton, delivered an awesome message that happened to include, What you find in the woods, stays in the woods. There were over 250 guests that were treated to a very eclectic sampling of

// NOTES & UPCOMING EVENTS

Dear Church Family, First Capital Christian invites you to consider our electronic giving program as a way to automate your regular weekly offerings. Electronic giving is convenient for you and provides a much-needed consistency for our church. There is no cost for you to participate. If you are currently giving on a weekly basis, you will no longer need to write out 52 checks a year or prepare 52 envelopes. No longer are you trying to write out your check before the offering plate reaches you during service. And when travel, illness or other circumstances prevent you from attending services, this program will allow your weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly offerings to continue on an uninterrupted basis. You may also sign up to give a onetime offering.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

To get started with your giving, please visit our website at: www.firstcapitalchristian.org. Click on the online giving button and set up an account. Its that easy. If you cannot access the internet, you can stop by the church office and I will help you get started. Once you have set up an account, you can choose to give to the building campaign, pay for your students conference fees, pay for your mission trip or donate to the general fund. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you! Angie Nachreiner Office Manager
