1.3AuditoriumLightingRedesign

1.3.1AppearanceDescription
UnlikemostofthespacesinProctorHighSchool,theauditoriumisoneof thefewthatdidnotundergoapreviouslightingrenovation.Ironically,itis definitelythespaceinthe440,000squarefootbuildingthatneedsitthemost. Themostobviouscharacteristicoftheauditoriumisthatitreliesalmostsolely andcompletelyondaylightingtoilluminatethespace.Thespacehasanareaof roughly12,400squarefeetandseatsapproximately1,500peopleandis comprisedalmostcompletelyofwindows.Nine4x12windowsandtwelve 84x18windowsof.75transmittancerunalongthelengththeauditorium. Theentireauditoriumismadeoftheexistingdarkwoodthathasbeeninplace since1932.Thetopareaofthewallsisapaintedwhitewoodentrimthatextends aroundtheentireperimeteroftheauditoriumandtheceilingiswhitepainted gypsumboard.Theflooriscompositiontilecoveredwithgraycarpet.Infront ofthestage,whichis48offtheground,spaceisavailableforanorchestrapit. Thepitisseparatedfromtheaudiencebyanoval21/2highovalcurtain.The redcurtainsintheauditoriummatchtheredfabricupholsteryontheseats. 1.3.2DesignFocus
TheauditoriumistheonemajorspaceinProctorHighSchoolthatstill maintainsahistoricalsignificanceaftertherenovationofthebuilding.Although certainsystemsinthespacehaveundergonerenovation,itstillkeepsitsoriginal architectureandfeel.Therefore,itisimportanttounderstandthataesthetics playaveryimportantroleinthedesignofthespace.Amoretraditionaland classicapproachwouldbeabetterfitforthelargespacethanamodernisticone. Thelightingdesignshouldprominentlyshowoffthedeepwoodenarchitecture tocapturetheoriginalfeeloftheroom.Fulllightingcontrolwillalsobe necessarybecausethespaceservesmultiplepurposes.Overall,thedesignhasto presenttheoccupantwiththefeelingthattheauditoriumholdsadistinguished quality. 33

1.3.3DesignCriteria
Perhapsthemostimportantissuethatwouldcometomindinadaylight friendlyspacesuchastheauditoriumisglare.Directglareshouldnotbetoo muchofaconcernthough,sincetheauditoriumhasanorthernexposure.Since thebottomhalfofthewallsarewood(lowreflectance)ascomparedtothewhite tops,reflectedglareshouldalsobelessened.Theauditoriumisusedforstudy hallsduringtheday,sotheproperhorizontaltaskilluminance(>30fc)willbe necessaryontheworkplaneduringtheschoolday.Duringeveningactivitiesa horizontalilluminanceof10fcshouldbemaintained.Verticalilluminance shouldnotbeanissuesincethewallswillnothaveanythingonthemthatneeds illumination.Thelightingsystemmustbeabletoadjustfortheauditoriums manypurposes.

1.3.4DesignSolution
Thedesignfortheauditoriumwasdevelopedfromtheideaofpreserving andenhancingthearchitectureinthespace.Thedesignconsistsofthreetypesof luminaires: 1.6Aperturecompactfluorescentdownlight 2. 8Aperturehighwattagecompactfluorescentdownlight 3. 49Diameter,53highdecorativechandelier The6aperturecompactfluorescentdownlightshavebeendesignedboth intheceilingabovethebalconyandtheceilingbelowthebalcony.Thesefixtures aremeanttoprovidegenerallightingtogettheoccupanttohis/herseatsafely whilemarkingtheaisles. Closertothestage,the(2)26WCFLfixturesarenotenoughtocontend withthe44footspanfromtheauditoriumceilingtothecarpetedfloor.Asa result,astrongerdownlightisnecessary.Metalhalidefixtureswouldeasilybe abletoadequatelyilluminatethefloor,buthighwattagecompactfluorescents wouldachievethesameobjectivewhilelendingitselftofull dimmingcontrol.Therefore,70Wcompactfluorescentdownlights havebeendesignedforthegenerallightingofthemainspace. Thecombinationofthetwotypesofdownlightsspecifiedisa viableoptionfortheauditorium,however,thedesignfocusinthe spacewastopreserveandenhancethearchitecture.Therefore,four 49diameterdecorativechandelierfixtureshavebeendesigned Auditorium Chandelier aroundthecentralareaoftheauditorium.Thesegoldandcrystal Fixture

chandelierswillcomplementthehistoricarchitectureoftheauditoriumwhile drawingattentionawayfromthedownlights.Thefixturesarelargeenoughto deliverastrongmessagetoanenteringaudience,butarestillsmallenoughto allowcompletevisibilityofthestagefromthehighestpointinthebalcony. 1.3.5Controls
Aprincipalcriterionfortheauditoriumistheabilitytohavedimmable control.Thisisimportantmainlyforeveningactivities,whenhouselightsmay needtobedimmedupanddownforaperformance.Asaresult,mostofthe luminairesinthedesignareondimmablecontrol.Specifically,a277Vdimming cabinetisdesignedtobeinstalledinthestagearea.Thisdimmingcabinetwill controlallofthetypeAandGfixturesandallowroomforadditionallighting.A likelyscenariofordimmingcontrolwouldbetodimthetypeAfixtures independentlyfromthetypeGfixtures.EachtypeHchandelierfixturewillhave itsownswitchlocatednexttothedimmingcabinet.Sincetheseluminairesare fordecorativeappearancemorethanlightlevelrequirements,keepingthemoff ofthedimmingsystemshouldnotbeofconcern.Thedimmingzonescan actuallybenefitdaytimeactivitiesaswell.Forexample,duringadaytime assemblyinwhichtheoccupantsunderneaththebalconyarenotreceiving enoughlight,thetypeGfixturescanremainoffwhilethetypeAfixturesare turnedonanddimmedtoanappropriatelevel.

Eachofthethreetypesofthreetypesofluminairesinthespacewill becircuitedindependently.Afourthcircuitisdedicatedtoemergencyfixtures. 1.3.8CalculationResults
Sinceamainconcernforthelightingdesignintheauditoriumiswhether thespacewillreceiveadequatelightforreadingintensiveactivities(suchas studyhalls)duringtheday,themodelspaceinAGI32wascalculatedusingonly daylight(anovercastdayat3:00pmonDecember21,2005,wasusedasthe daylightparameter)inordertogetapoorcasescenarioofhowmuchdaylight canenterthespace.Eveninsuchascenario,theauditoriumreceivedanaverage illuminanceofmorethan30fc.Therefore,thespacecanoperatethroughoutthe schooldaywithoutneedinganylights.Toverifythatthenecessary10fc horizontalilluminanceintheaudiencewasmaintainedduringevening performances,themodelspacewasalsocalculatedusingonlyelectriclight.The groundfloorandbalconybothreceivedmorethanthe10fcofhorizontal illuminancenecessaryinanauditoriumseatingspace.
