CASE STUDY It is easier to learn how to use PROVISION by doing a simple case study. Let's start by looking at a simple compression system. 1000 lb. moles per hour of gas mixture containing 5% methane, 20% ethane, 25% propane, 30% n-butane, and 20% n-pentane at 14.7 PSIA and 90F is to be compressed first to 50 PSIA, then to 200 PSIA using a two-stage compressor system. An inter-stage cooler is used to cool the compressed gas from each stage to its original temperature. A knockout drum is installed after the first cooler to remove any liquid present in the compressed gas before feeding it to the second compressor. Let's solve this case step by step using PROVISION.

STEP 1: Identifying the Case Before starting PROVISIo'N,. it would be a good idea to draw a process flow diagram (PFD) on a piecq of paper. When drawing a PFD, try to label each unit and stream systematically, so you can easily identifY them. The purpose of a PFD is to visualize the process and to roughly understand the case. A rough sample PFD should look like this:

STEP 2 Starting PROVISION Once the basic PFD is drawn and the problem has been identified, you are ready to start PROVISION. To start PROVISION, double click on the PrOlision 1.02 icon in SimSci group. You will be greeted with a welcome menu. Read the menu. It tells you some basic things you need to know when using PROVISION.

STEP 3: Drawing PFD Using PROVISION

The first step for approaching a case is to draw a complete process flow diagram. To draw a PFD, follow these steps. 1 Click on New on File menu to start a new case. 2 Move the mouse to the palette showing units. For list of units available in PROVISION, refer to Appendix B. 3 Using the figure drawn as a guide, select needed units and place them on the PFD one by one. Click on the Compressor button and thenbutton click and on the space Pressure Change/Compressor then clickin onthe thePFD space in the PFD Heat Exchanger/Simple HX(1) where you wish to place the compressor. Follow the same steps for Simple HX (1), Flash, Compressor (2), and Simple HX (2). You will notice that each unit is named by PROVISION, automatfcally. You will also notice that each name has a red border meaning that the condi/ions have to be supplied. Click on the stream button on the build palette to draw the stream lines. All the possible EXIT ports appear on each unit as soon as the stream button is selected. The required outlet ports are colored red, while the optional exits are given in green. Add streams by clicking on the origin of the stream (either a unit exit port or an ex1:ernal feed stream, on a unoccupied part of the PFD), then click again at the destination of the stream. Continue until all streams have been added to the PFD.

Example: To apply a feed stream to Cl, click on PFD that's not occupied by any unit, then click again at compressor. Notice the name is give as S1.
5 Connect all the streams in order shown in Figure I. Pay special attention to the number of streams. Each stream is numbered in the order they are created.

STEP 4: Defining the Component List Now that the process flow diagram is drawn, you need to specifY the components that are used in the case. To enter the components, follow these steps.
(j)

Click on the IQl icon on the menu bar to specifY components. Enter the names of the components in the Component: window. Click on the I Add, I button to add each component. Type in Methane in the Component: window. Click on the I ADd., ! button. Notice the box has a blue border as soon as you click on the I ADd' I button, meaning that you have supplied the information. Add. the remaining Ethane, Propane, N-butane, Pentane, and Water, and components clicking onfhe button after each component. You can also choose components from a list. To choose from a list, click on the I s"""'" he. LAt.... I button. If you accidentally added an incorrect component to the list, you can remove the component by clicking on the component and clicking on I .- I button.
