Consumption rates are based on data from Think Water Act Water Volume 1
Pre 2003 house it is assumed that Shower, Laundry and Kitchen used the equivalent amount of water as a 1Star appliance or fixture and it was assumed that a Toilet was equivalent to a 3Star.
For a more detailed assesment, you can measure the water rating of most fittings yourself. This can be done with taps and showers by using a stop watch and a bucket. Turn on the tap/shower to full and measure the volume of water used in15 seconds. Multiply by 4 to get the water consumption for a minute (L/min) and then measure compare this water consumption with the Star rating located in the above table (from Australian Standards 6400:2005). Most should have a water consumption rating located somewhere on the appliance (L/wash or existing appliances similar), this can then be referenced to the same table.
