Thamnidium a genus of molds related to the typical bread molds.

lds. Characterized by branched sporangiosphores and sporangia consisting of a large terminal one without columnella. T. elegans causes whiskers to refrigerated meat. The genus Thamnidium was erected in 18 ! by "ink who described and illustrated his fungus as ha#ing a terminal sporangium and beneath this$ on the sporangiosphore$ dichotomously di#ided branches bearing sporangiola. The genus Thamnidium is considered to contain four species. These are T. elegans$ T. simple%$ T. #erticillatum and T. anomalum n. sp. The zygospores of the genus are described completely for the first time. They are borne aerially and are darkcolored$ roughened$ borne between isogamous suspensors which are parallel to each other. The deli&uescent'walled sporangia of Thamnidium are like those formed by Helicostylum. (ersistent'walled sporangia are formed at the ape% of dichotomously'branched sporangiophores that arise laterally from the main sporangiophore or its branches. )ygospores ha#e opposed suspensors and a rough$ dark zygosporangial wall *+enny$ 1!!,-.

Trichotecium filamentous mitosphoric fungus widely distributed on decaying #egetables and on soil. Considered as a contaminant plant pathogen T. roseum' a pink mold which grows on wood$ paper$ fruits such as apples and peaches$ and #egetables such as cucumbers and cantaloupes. This mold is easily recognized by the clusters of two'celled conidia at the ends of short$ erect conidiosphores. Conidia ha#e a nipple'like pro.ection at the point of attachment$ and the smaller of the two cells of each conidium is at this end.

Zygorrhynchus soil molds The sporangia of species of Zygorhynchus are globose$ nonapophysate$ and with a deli&uescent wall. 1imilar to 6ucor e%cept that the zygospore suspensors are markedly une&ual in size. Z. vuilleminii' one of the species of zygorhynchus that are lysis'resistant$ the walls of these species contains glucosamine$ fructose$ glucoronic acid but little or no glucose. )ygospores form zygosporangia that ha#e a brown to black$ roughened wall. The suspensors are opposed and heterogamous *at maturity$ one suspensor is as large$ or nearly so$ as the zygosporangium$ and the other usually is barely$ or not$ #isible-. /ll known species are homothallic.
