A successful Bosch product is celebrating an anniversary. In mid-January the automotive supplier will produce the 100 millionth Motronic control unit for gasoline engines at its production plant in Salzgitter, Germany. This figure documents the huge success of a system which was first put on the market by Bosch back in 1979. The Motronic presented at that time still serves as the technical basis for all current and future generations of engine control units. Motronic made it possible to combine the control of fuel injection and ignition in one digital system. Proven 100 million-fold today, Motronic and its variants are a major factor in ensuring not only reliable, but also economical, low-emission engine operation. Flexible use for a broad range of requirements The current Motronic ME(D)17 serves as a joint platform for both diesel and gasoline control units. It can be individually adapted to the customer's needs and the requirements of various market segments. For example, in combination with gasoline direct injection, in the stratified-charge mode DI-Motronic contributes to improved mixture processing, and therefore ensures low fuel consumption and up to 15 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions. The Value Motronic variant also satisfies the requirements for low-price vehicles in the price segment up to 7,000 euros. By using a powerful chip set with a 32-bit processor and software with a lean function structure, this Motronic variant also creates the conditions for clean propulsion in engines with intake manifold injection and two to four cylinders. And Motronic can also be adapted for use with alternative fuels. As a bi-fuel control unit, Motronic supports the alternating use of gas and

gasoline in gasoline engines. With the FlexFuel expansion, engines that run on a gasoline-ethanol mixture can be operated across a range of mixing ratios from pure gasoline to pure ethanol. Current developments are especially directed at reducing the number of differences between platforms for diesel and gasoline engines. Beyond this, however, Motronic is also suitable for the integration of functionalities for hybrid applications or transmission control systems.

Exact calculation of injection and ignition parameters The current Motronic calculates the injection and ignition parameters over 8,000 times a minute for each individual combustion process. This enables it to optimally adapt to the operating conditions and the driver's wishes. Thanks to Motronics continually growing computing power, functions such as charge pressure control of turbochargers, variable camshaft adjustment, complex exhaust treatment, speed control via a cruise control unit, as well as an electronic vehicle immobilizer and OBD self-diagnosis can be integrated in the engine management system. Safety systems such the traction control system (TCS) and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) can also intervene in engine management to increase active driving safety.
