Malaysian National Tsunami Early Warning System (MNTEWS)

Malaysian Government had established MNTEWS just after the December 26 2004 Tsunami. To enable the provision of timely and effective early warning to the public in the event of the occurrence of a tsunami generated over the Indian Ocean, South China Sea, Sulu Sea or the Pacific Ocean that will affect Malaysia.

As national monitoring centre for all earthquake activities and tsunami in Malaysia and its adjacent areas on a 24-hour basis troughout the year. Issuance of information, advisory, notice, early warning and warning on the occurrence of earthquake and tsunami that threaten the security and safety of Malaysia. It is an integral part of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System and the Northwest Pacific Advisory System coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, UNESCO.

to improve the monitoring sea cond in the region

Normal mode - transmit to MTEWC every hour through INMARSAT. Tsunami mode - transmitting every minute.

- Replacing Inmarsat communication with VSAT communication. - Normal mode every 1 hour to every 15 minutes (tsunami mode - every 1 minute)

MNTEWS

MMD has also monitor the sea level at 37 sites in the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean

DEEP OCEAN BUOY NETWORK

Pulau Rondo,Indonesia - installed 30 Dec 2005

Pulau Layang-Layang installed 7 March 2006

To detect the surface pressure and the height of the tsunami waves; tsunameter instrument tool.

BUOY NETWORK- cont

LINKAGE TO PWTC/JMA

-earthquake information/tsunami warning -tsunami advisory services for tsunami that occur in the Pacific, South China Sea and Indian Ocean region -help in verification of the earthquake data and information issued.

MNTEWS PROCESSING COMPONENT

-WIN-ITDB modelling software -estimate the tsunami time travel

TSUNAMI MODELLING

Calculated Tsunami Travel Times (EQ 26 Dec 2004)

- each curve represents 30 minutes of tsunami travel time -hit Indonesia in 15 minutes, Sri Lanka in 2 hrs and Kenya in 9 hrs after the EQ 19

Earthquake Information and Tsunami Alert/Warning ==> via various channels such as - SMS (SMS is used as an early alert on earthquake information and tsunami warning to relevant personnel and agencies) - Hotline (a hotline channel is used to communicate directly between MNTEWC and National Television) - Fixed line (whenever necessary) and Telefax - Website - Crawlers (in the case of felt earthquake, or tsunami)

- Fixed Line Alert System (FLAS) (ensure the warnings to evacuate reach the communities)
- Mini studio at MNTEWC
- Tsunami Siren (in the case of evacuation is necessary)

FIXED LINE ALERT SYSTEM (FLAS)

-jointly develop with TELEKOM Malaysia; country communication network -enables voice message dissemination of earthquake/tsunami warning to reach public in affected areas through the fixed telephone line.

Public Awareness
Several public awareness campaigns have been carried out at selected high risk areas in the 2008 , 2009, 2010 and 2011. Will be continue in next year.

Tsunami Drill
Tsunami drills have been carried out: - at Tuaran, Sabah in the year 2006 (Pacific Wave 2006) - at Langkawi, Kedah in the year 2007. - at Langkawi, Kedah in 14 October 2009 (Indian Ocean Wave 2009)

-Is important to educate the citizen to concern our early warning in order to reduce the risks of fatality.
