The Power of Gratitude

Events This Week

Lent invites us to reflect in a special way on a persons love that was so totally complete and unconditional that it eventually led to his demise. Lent is also a time when we as Christians are called to examine our commitment to Gods invitation to follow Jesus. We are invited to journey with Jesus and some of his companions during the more painful times of his life while we ask ourselves, Do I contribute to the continuous nailing of Jesus to the cross, over and over again, by my actions or omissions in life?
Offered by Franciscan Adult School

Contact Dr. Jackie Stewart to register at 617-542-6440 ext. 143 or email SAS.Evang@gmail.com. Please leave your name, telephone no., and the course, date/time you wish to attend. Offered by Franciscan Adult School

About Holy Thurday

holy Thursday is the first day of the Paschal Triduum (Paschal means passover, Triduumthree days) which includes holy Thursday, good Friday*, and holy Saturday with the Easter Vigil*. in the hebrew Scriptures, the Book of Exodus 12 enjoins the israelites to observe a memorial feast. A lamb is to be slaughtered for every household and its blood smeared on the doorposts. it is to be roasted and eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. it is the Passover of the Lord where the Lord destroys the firstborn of every living creature in Egypt, but passes over the houses which are marked with the blood of the lamb. it is to be a perpetual institution. This passage is read on holy Thursday. According to the Christian Scriptures, Jesus came to Jerusalem from the Mount of olives (Lk 21:37) to celebrate the Feast of the unleavened Bread (Passover) with his disciples. it was the day for sacrificing the Passover lamb. he sent disciples ahead to secure a guest room and prepare the feast. This place is called the Cenacle (the first Christian church) and is located above King Davids tomb on Mount zion in the old City. it is also the site of Pentecost. Jesus celebrated this last supper with them. During it Jesus instituted holy Eucharist. he gaves thanks (Eucharist means thanks), blessed the cup, and gave it to them; likewise he blessed the bread, broke it, gave it to them to eat. This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me. And likewise, the cup after they had eaten, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which shall be shed for you. (Lk 22:19b-20) While they were still at supper, Jesus predicted that one of them would betray him. it was one whose hand was at table. Matthews gospel adds the intimate detail of the one who has dipped his hand in the dish with me. it was Judas iscariot, who had already promised to hand over Jesus to the Temple authorities for thirty pieces of silver. Jesus also predicted the denial of Peter before the cock crows thrice i.e., very early in the morning. After the dinner, Jesus retired to the Mount of olives in the Kidron valley with his disciples. he took three of them to stand watch as he withdrew into the garden at gethsemane to pray. here he

experienced agony as he foresaw the fate that awaited him. his followers were tired and fell asleep, leaving Jesus alone in his sorrow. Soon, Judas appeared with the crowd from the Temple authorities. he kissed Jesus and they took him into custody, and led him away to the house of the high priest Caiphas. Jesus was accused of blasphemy and condemned as deserving to die. he was mocked and spat upon. Then Peter denied even knowing Jesus, and the cock crowed thrice. This place where Jesus was incarcerated in a cistern overnight at Caiphas house is located at Gallicantu, which means the cock crows. Johns gospel tells us that Jesus came together with his disciples before Passover knowing that his own passover was at hand. he rose from supper, and poured water into a basin and washed the feet of his disciples. Judas was among them. When he returned to table he predicted that one of them would betray him. This gospel elaborates on the detail of Matthews gospel saying, it is the one to whom i hand the morsel after i have dipped it. So he dipped the morsel and took it and handed it to Judas... (Jn 13:26) After Judas left, Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment, love one another as i have loved you. This is how all will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. (Jn 13:34) holy Thursday is also called Maundy Thursday from mandatum which means command. After this supper, Jesus goes through the Kidron valley up to the Mount of olives. This is the gospel that is read at the Mass of the Lords Supper.

n the evening we celebrate the Mass of The Lord's Supper which includes a symbolic washing of the feet of twelve people. After the Mass, the remaining holy Eucharist, both consecrated wine and bread, are brought in solemn procession to a special place of repose while singing the traditional Pange Lingua Gloriosi/Tantum Ergo. At St. Anthony Shrine this will be in the first floor church. The reserved Eucharist will be used for the Communion Service during the Passion Service on good Friday. There is a period of silent adoration. The Tabernacle remains empty from now on until Mass is celebrated at the Easter Vigil.
