Never underestimate the importance of a clean colon

ALL ABOUT THE BOWELS

The bowel is the common name for the large intestine and comprises the colon, rectum and anus. The colon is a muscular tube, which together with the small intestine forms the major part of the digestive system. The digestive process is completed in the colon, where water is soluble nutrients are absorbed & certain vitamins are synthesised. The colon is also responsible for the elimination of body wastes including those from food. In a healthy colon, all this is achieved with the help of billions of friendly resident bacteria. Many practitioners now believe that keeping the colon healthy is crucial to our overall health & vitality.

SOME INTERESTING FACTS:

Many middle-aged people can have between 1-7 kilograms of undigested faecal matter stuck in their colon. This waste matter can cause gas, bloating and sluggishness Over a third of the population regularly suffer from digestive upsets Many experts believe impacted waste material in the bowel can harden and thicken over the years

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

Nutritionists and scientists are now confirming that the age-old saying of you are what you eat has never been truer! A HEALTHY COLON RELIES ON 5 THINGS: 1. Good elimination. It is important to make sure waste
material moves steadily, regularly and completely through the colon. Equally the waste material shouldnt move too fast. 2. Healthy diet. Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables can help encourage the efficient elimination of waste material. 3. Plenty of Water. Water is vital for preventing dehydration and cleansing the body. Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water per day is recommended and ideal. 4. Relaxation. Help the digestive system with regular exercise, meditation and relaxation. Stress can hinder proper digestion and interfere with regular waste elimination. 5. Healthy Bacteria. The long term health of the intestine is dependent on keeping a favourable balance of healthy bacteria over unhealthy bacteria. This balance can be upset by antibiotics, processed foods and stress. Probiotics can help to restore a favourable balance of good bacteria in the intestine.

What is the function of good bacteria in the gut?

Bacteria in the gut (microflora) fulfill a number of important functions for humans. These include assisting in the break down and absorption of food, helping to reduce the growth of unfriendly bacteria, supporting the immune system and reducing the likelihood of digestive and bowel related problems. The microflora reinforce the barrier function of the intestinal mucosa, helping to discourage the attachment of unfriendly microorganisms. Some types of microflora may contribute to the body's requirements for certain vitamins, including biotin and pantothenic acid. Intakes of 'unfriendly' bacteria, an improper diet, antibiotic use and the stresses and strains of modern life can lead to an imbalance of bacteria in the gut. The addition of probiotics to a balanced diet can play an important role in helping the environment in the gut remain healthy.

Are all probiotic products the same?

No. The problem with many probiotic products is the viability of the bacteria. The consumer may not receive as much live bacteria as they expect. The probiotics in Lifestream BowelBiotics+ are independently laboratory tested for viability, ensuring a beneficial amount of probiotics are delivered to the gut. The probiotics contained in Lifestream BowelBiotics+ are: Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum.

Do the probiotics survive the stomach acid?

The strains of probiotic microbial cells chosen for inclusion in Lifestream BowelBiotics+ include Lactic Acid Bacteria which are naturally resistant to acidic conditions in the stomach and the gastrointestinal tract. When probiotics are combined with foods, like psyllium, this raises the pH of the stomach therefore enabling greater numbers of probiotic micro-organisms to successfully pass through the stomach into the small intestine. In vitro testing has shown that the probiotic cultures in Lifestream BowelBiotics+ do not reduce in viability/concentration after two hours at the acidic pH of 2. This means they can reach the small intestine and establish themselves as part of the normal microflora.

WHAT IS SO UNIQUE ABOUT THE FORMULA OF LIFESTREAM BOWELBIOTICS+?

Lifestream BowelBiotics+ has been developed to help with a healthy balanced diet to keep the bowels healthy in a totally natural way. In order to achieve this, Lifestream BowelBiotics+ has 3 specific natural ingredients. These are: 1. Fibre (Psyllium husks) 2. Prebiotics (Inulin) 3. Probiotics (Lactobacilli & Bifidobacteria) All of these ingredients are from natural sources only. All are gentle in action and are not absorbed by the body, making Lifestream BowelBiotics+ suitable for regular, everyday use.

1. FIBRE (PSYLLIUM HUSKS)

Fibre is important in the diet to ensure that waste material is moved efficiently and regularly through the colon so that undigested matter is not left for long periods in the bowel. Typically most fibre in our diet comes from wheat bran (present in most breads and cereals) but this is unsuitable for those who are allergic or intolerant to wheat products. The fibre in Lifestream BowelBiotics+ is therefore sourced from non-wheat sources which include psyllium husks and inulin. Psyllium husks are a water retentive non-wheat fibre source. When water is added to psyllium husks, a soft gel forms, helping matter to move through the colon smoothly. Water retentive fibre also encourages the presence of natural bacteria in the bowel.

THE IMPORTANCE OF VARIED FIBRE SOURCES

Different types of high fibre foods in the diet can have a synergistic effect and can complement the effects of the psyllium husks in Lifestream BowelBiotics+. Most vegetables, lentils and fruits (dried apricots for example) are good sources of fibre. It is important to get into the habit of varying your fibre intake from different sources.

2. INULIN (PREBIOTICS)

Inulins are naturally occurring oligosaccharides (several simple sugars linked together) that are resistant to digestion in the stomach and intestines but are metabolized in the colon by bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. Inulins are found in vegetables such as asparagus, leeks, onions, chicory roots and garlic. Inulins help to promote the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria while simultaneously helping to reduce the population of unfriendly bacteria in the colon. Substances such as inulin that promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the colon are called prebiotics. The ability to digest inulin varies among the different types of microflora which may commonly inhabit the intestine. Several studies 1,2,3 have shown how inulin added to a healthy balanced diet improves intestinal flora and enhances the Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria population. Other unfriendly species of bacteria including E. coli, Clostridia and Salmonella cannot utilize inulin. An abundance of beneficial bacteria helps your intestinal tract to remain healthy by creating conditions that are unfavourable to unfriendly bacteria. Lifestream BowelBiotics+ can help to ensure that sufficient levels of inulin are provided in the diet.

3. LACTOBACILLI & BIFIDOBACTERIA (PROBIOTICS)

Probiotics are live microbial organisms that populate the gut (such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria) and are beneficial to health. 'Good' and 'Bad' bacteria are continually competing with each other in the gut and it is now clearly recognised that long term bowel health and overall well-being can be supported by maintaining a favourable balance of friendly bacteria in the colon.

WHY ARE 5 DIFFERENT STRAINS OF BACTERIA INCLUDED IN LIFESTREAM BOWELBIOTICS+?

A probiotic formula containing several species of beneficial bacteria may have an improved overall spectrum of activity within the gut. The Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria complement each other due to their different colonization sites. Whilst both are found throughout the entire digestive tract, lactobacilli are especially abundant in the small intestine, where as bifidobacteria are more abundant in the large intestine (colon). Lifestream BowelBiotics+ contains probiotic cultures Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum.

LIFESTREAM BOWELBIOTICS+ SYNBIOTIC EFFECT

The combination of a probiotic and a prebiotic is called a synbiotic. Many studies show that synbiotic combinations are more potent than their prebiotic or probiotic components alone. This is known as the Synbiotic effect4.

WHEN WILL I SEE THE RESULTS?

Results will vary from person to person. However, everyone taking Lifestream BowelBiotics+ should benefit from an overall increase in vigor and general good health.

CAN I TAKE LIFESTREAM BOWELBIOTICS+ ALONGSIDE ANTIBIOTICS AND MEDICATIONS?

Due to its absorbent nature, it is recommended that Lifestream BowelBiotics+ be taken at least 1 hour apart from medications. If you are on medication, it is still important to seek advice from your doctor before taking Lifestream BowelBiotics+. The probiotic content in Lifestream BowelBiotics+ makes it suitable for use during and following a course of antibiotics, however you should allow at least one hour to lapse between taking antibiotics and Lifestream BowelBiotics+.

CAN I USE LIFESTREAM BOWELBIOTICS+ AS PART OF A DETOX PROGRAM?

Yes. Because of its cleansing properties Lifestream BowelBiotics+ is ideal for inclusion as part of the diet in a detox program.

IS LIFESTREAM BOWELBIOTICS+ SUITABLE DURING PREGNANCY?

Lifestream BowelBiotics+ can be taken by pregnant and breastfeeding women. However, as a responsible nutritional company we believe you should seek advice from your doctor on all aspects of nutrition whilst pregnant.

LIFESTREAM BOWELBIOTICS+ AND DIABETICS?

Generally, yes. None of the ingredients in Lifestream BowelBiotics+ are absorbed by the body (they stay in the digestive system). The soluble fibre component may be of benefit to diabetics for several reasons, one of which is that the sugars in the fibre are not digested. Diabetics taking Lifestream BowelBiotics+ should discuss this with their diabetic health practitioner as it may play a role in helping to maintain sugar levels when taken as part of a healthy diet.

WHY DOES IT NOT NEED TO BE REFRIGERATED?

A combination of the freeze drying process and cryoprotectant microencapsulation of the microbial cells keeps Lifestream BowelBiotics+ stable at room temperature.

HEALTHY HEART?

Lifestream BowelBiotics+ may also help to keep our heart healthy. Studies in the United States5,6 have shown that the soluble fibre in psyllium husks, when used as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may help maintain a healthy heart. Research has also indicated that moderate amounts of inulin can assist in supporting healthy levels of cholesterol7, 8.
