CRECs Metropolitan Learning Center South Africa Educational Field Experience Fundraiser: Denim and Diamonds
(Bloomfield, CT) Eight MLC students were selected to attend the November field study to South Africa, along with eight students from the Ethel Walker School. The trip is coordinated by Plowshares Institute, a small Connecticut-based non-profit organization working for a more just, peaceful and sustainable world. As part of the field study each student will focus on a topic to research in South Africa, as part of a course comparing the United States and South Africa. Some of the topics students are interested in studying include, poverty, hunger, conflict resolution and education. As part of the course, each student will also design a project to give back to his or her community and share insights about the learning experience. The clothing fundraiser on April 5 will run from 9-12:00. The cost of dress shirts and jeans will be $10, and formal dresses and suits will be $40. Ties and accessories will be $5. The Metropolitan Learning Center is located at 1551 Blue Hills Avenue in Bloomfield. Any jeans not sold will be donated to South Africans. Organizers of the event are looking for clean jeans that are still in good shape, and formal attire like clean prom dresses on hangers, clean special occasion dresses, jackets, suits, shirts, ties, and accessories.
