Sponsorship Booklet 2005 Mini Baja Car

Introduction to SAE Mini-Baja Mini-Baja is an international collegiate design competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Engineering students are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain. The object of the competition is to provide SAE student members with a challenging project that involves the planning and manufacturing tasks found when introducing a new product to the consumer industrial market. Teams from different universities compete against one another to have their design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm. Students must function as a team to design, build, test, promote, and race a vehicle within the limits of the rules, but also to generate financial support for their project and manage their educational priorities. Complete information about SAE and their many student competitions and programs is located at www.sae.org.

2005 Team As SAE is a new student organization to the UK Paducah Engineering Program, this is the first time a local chapter is available in this area for any engineering student to join. We as a chapter plan to enter the SAE mini Baja competition with high aspirations for success. We intend to build a brand new vehicle from the ground up. By the time of the competition this coming June 16-19, we must research, design, fabricate, and test our new vehicle. The mini Baja competition gives the students participating a real life opportunity that allows them to put classroom theory to work. All participating students will gain valuable hands on engineering experience while learning organizational skills as well as learning how to function as a team.

About the Competition SAE Mini-Baja is divided into three regional competitions: West, Mid-West, and East. While the format differs in each competition, they are all judged based on a static design portion and two days of dynamic events; points are totaled as follows: Event Type Static Events Event Description Engineering Design Engineering Sales Presentation Cost Safety Acceleration Braking Chain Pull Endurance Hill Climb Land Maneuverability Sled Pull Suspension and Traction Top speed Water Maneuverability East 200 150 -100 to 0 50 50 100 400 100 100 50 100 1300 Mid-West West 360 -50 to +100 0 to 100 30 -100 to 0 40 40 225 40 40 40 40 855 100 with design +/-100 400 0 to 100 +/-100 1000

Cost of Participation The SAE mini Baja competition is sponsored corporately by Briggs and Stratton and SAE, however the individual student sections that enter the competition must raise all money used to build their vehicle on their own. Though Briggs and Stratton donates the Intek 20 engine once the student section has entered the competition and paid the entry fee, all other manufacturing costs must be funded by the local student section. This includes any aftermarket parts, raw materials, tools, and safety equipment that must be purchased in order to comply with all rules of the competition. Also, all travel expenses to and from the competition must be raised as well. A breakdown of these expenses can be found on the following page.
