A Message from the Dean

MLC Families, The month of March marks a very critical time for majority of our students. CMT/CAPT/ and SBA testing will begin next week. We are confident that our students will perform wonderfully, as they have worked hard at preparing to do excellent on these state assessments in the past. Many students have exercised the option of attending afterschool assistance on Monday and Tuesday afternoons, and many students participated in the Saturday Academy over these past 7 weeks; next Saturday, March 22nd will be the last session. The students commitment and dedication to do well on these state assessments is admirable and exemplifies their levels of determination. In an effort to assist your children with achieving success, please ensure they get a good nights sleep and take advantage of our breakfast program here at school in the mornings. For those not testing, we have not forgotten about you.! The Freshman have been busy preparing for History Day which took place this past Saturday and the upcoming Abolitionist Fair on March 26th. In addition to the juniors taking the SBA Field Test, they are also preparing for the upcoming SAT. Our seniors are anxiously awaiting their college acceptance letters and we celebrate new acceptances every morning during our announcements. Please remember that the end of the quarter closes on March 31st so lets encourage all of our students to do well and finish strong! Heather Gish, High School Dean of Students

International Update

International Week of Spring Festivals

The week of March 16-22 is full of meaning for people around the world. Perhaps the best known is March 17, Saint Patricks Day, the day the patron saint of Ireland died in 461 C.E. Saint Patrick is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland and his feast day is celebrated by Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox Christian churches as well as by Irish communities worldwide. It is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and even provinces of Canada. Less well known, but equally important is Naw Ruz the Bahai New Year and Norouz, the Persian/Zoroastrian New Year, which begins on the evening of March 20 and ends on the evening of March 21, 2014. It is celebrated in many of the countries that were influenced by the ancient Persian Empire and is believed to go back more than 3000 years. In 2010 the United Nations recognized the International Day of Naw Ruz. It corresponds with the Spring Equinox, which we know as the first day of spring! So Happy Spring Festival!

The MLC Dragons took on the Two Rivers Hurricanes for the CRAL Championship. Both teams played extremely hard and showcased all the hard work that was put in over the course of the season. In the end, there could only be one team left standing. Congratulations to the Hurricanes as they earned a 62-39 victory. on to the high school level. We will certainly be seeing their names again in the future. It was truly a rewarding experience to watch them grow both on and off the court.

We sold $1551 worth of books and school supplies at our last Scholastic Book Fair in the MLC Library. This means we earned $620 Scholastic dollars for the library. Some of these funds were used to purchase books and the rest of the money will be used to purchase headphones from Scholastic. This was a huge increase compared to last years winter fair (the total for that one was $1145)! Thank you for all of your support! Look for our next Scholastic Book Fair in May and it will be the famous BOGO (Buy one get one free) sale!!!!!!!! Suzanne Artis, School Librarian suartis@crec.org
